This title is an excellent addition to the third-person genre, incorporating great components of sound, music, and visuals, as well as bolstering incredibly intense melee combat.

Now, if you are wanting a good role-play, this is not it. My complaint has always been, why cant they take the engine that they use for this game, and make a hard core RPG with it? I am not a fan of the look of games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale (despite the fact that both of these are very good games). Imagine Baldur's Gate from the perspective of Blade of Darkness. I would be in heaven.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Feb 22, 2001)
Severance is not a role-playing game. It is not a game suitable for the young or impressionable. It is not a particular deep game, with the storyline being largely submerged beneath the rivers of blood which you unleash wherever you go, and your missions generally consisting of getting from A to B by pulling a lot of levers and then picking up an item. It is however a lot of fun, with gruesome but surprisingly intelligent combat and some lightweight RPG elements to flesh things out. With four characters to choose from, each giving an entirely different experience, it's also good value for money. It might not be perfect, but it's arguably the best fantasy action game of recent years, and well worth a look if you're after some good old fashioned gratuitous violence.
IGN (Feb 27, 2001)
After all is said and done, Blade of Darkness was a pretty darn satisfying experience. The battes are intense, the gore is outrageous, the levels are well designed, the graphics are superb, and there is a save anywhere feature. Thank God for that. So if you are looking for a challenging and beautiful adventure, you'll want to check this one out. Just make sure you have a machine that can run it.
Power Unlimited (Mar, 2001)
PC Zone (1993-2010) (Aug 13, 2001)
Other improvements could focus on the animation and interface, but apart from that, you have to say that Severance is an amazingly accomplished work of art. But is it a classic? Not quite. OK, the graphics and physics are immaculate, and the fighting is elegant. But ultimately Severance doesn't quite make it to the top of the tree.
GameStar (Germany) (Mar, 2001)
GameZone (Mar 16, 2001)
Blade of Darkness calls itself an action-adventure game, and it surely is that. It is also a game that will appeal to those that like carving the enemy up like a human vega-matic. Yet, there is something amazing about a game that is so delightful in the realm of eye candy, that even the excessive gore can be overlooked. And yes, this is a blast to play.
Fragland.net (Sep 18, 2002)
The game is rock solid, the atmosphere is incredible, the graphics are tremendous, and although there aren't enough RPG elemtents to satisfy the RPG-freak, there's enough interesting stuff in there to keep most people happy for a long while.
games xtreme (Mar 15, 2001)
To conclude; Severance is a hard enjoyable romp through the glories of hard fantasy, gore and flashing blades. It starts difficult and doesn’t let up even till the end of the game, it’s packed full of nice touches and atmospheric cut-scenes using the in game engine, puzzles and traps. It has big mean monsters and some of the hardest bosses I’ve seen in one of these games ever, it will take months and months to master unless you’re a god at these kinds of games. It has a fairly interesting storyline and will keep your interest to see what lies on the next level and what secrets are yet to be uncovered. And to add to all of this, you can go online in Severance Multiplayer and beat the gore out of your friends/enemies and family in a deathmatch. With the level editor and the tools just released over at the official site, things can only be looking up for one of the meanest and most enjoyable if frustrating at times hack/slash third person swords and sorcery games this year.
GameSpy (Mar 06, 2001)
There will always be a place for simple violent diversions in gaming, and this is one of those that seems to balance a few contemporary technical features with classic gameplay to create an experience that is quite simply fun.
Daily PC Game Reviews (Jan 29, 2012)
Severance: Blade of Darkness should be a game of distinction that garners more attention from core gamers. Even after more than a decade, I can say that the game holds up pretty well. You can't go wrong in a game that has you quickly thinking on your feet, and adopting the best combat tactics in defeating a horde of monsters bent on hacking you to pieces. There's also large areas for you to explore in each of the game's expansive levels, so be prepared for what could be the adventure of your life.
Bez wątpienia mamy tu do czynienia z jedną z najbardziej przełomowych gier z gatunku action TPP osadzonego w realiach fantasy.
Probably the biggest shame is that Rebel Act couldn't get Internet multiplayer working for the release. Currently there's only LAN play, which makes this primarily a single player game. Even without multiplayer, however, Blade of Darkness is a solid title. The graphics are impressive and the combat is wonderfully fun. Four very different characters and plenty of secrets add good replay value. A few missing features combined with the substantial system requirements may keep it from being a smash hit, but action fans will find plenty of blood soaked combat goodness to sink their teeth into.
GamePro (US) (Apr 11, 2001)
The visuals show off impressively realistic lighting and topnotch texture maps. The audio effects, on the other hand, are sparse. Despite the so-so sounds and demanding controls, Blade of Darkness is an entertaining action/adventure game where it pays to keep your wits honed and your sword sharpened.
PC Games (Germany) (Mar, 2001)
Mana Pool (May 23, 2011)
In conclusion, then, I have an excellent memory, and I was right, this is a good game. Find it, if you still can (it might require a bit of hunting about, rather like the game itself makes you do) and have a go. There’s even an online mode for arena battles, and a small modding community for new maps. Many other ten year old games that can still say that?
If you’re looking for a unique Action/Adventure game, you might want to consider Blade of Darkness. I don’t think there’s anything else out there like it. I played the demo in November 2000 and I was impressed. I bought the game when it hit U. S. store shelves in June 2001. A year and a half after buying it, I have finally played it and I’m glad I played it. However, I do have a list of disappointments and that list begins and ends with the game’s combat mechanics.
Game Over Online (Feb 24, 2001)
As The Darkness is abolished and you’re given a hero’s welcome, I liken Blade of Darkness to a popcorn flick. Check your brain at the door, this one’s all about the special effects and boisterous fighting scenes. Gamers that prefer a little rhyme or reason to their slaying will certainly be disappointed not only by the lack of an engaging storyline, but also by the half-witted puzzles. With that said, there are enough exciting moments in Blade of Darkness to marginally recommend it to those in the mood for a little mindless hack ‘n slash action. Just don’t expect much in terms of role-playing, this is an action game through and through.
Gamer's Pulse (Mar 21, 2001)
SO there you have the skinny on Blade of Darkness. If you like the 3rd person fighter than this is at least worth a look. If you can take or leave the genre, leave this one.
GameSpot (Feb 28, 2001)
Blade of Darkness is a hack-and-slash third-person action game in which you can play as one of four different warriors, all of whom must do bloody battle with assorted forces of evil. The game follows in the tradition of similar fantasy-themed 3D action games that feature violent melee combat, such as Die by the Sword, Heretic II, Drakan, and, most recently, Rune. Blade of Darkness distinguishes itself from the rest of these with its selection of different characters, its motion-captured character animation, and its gore effects and lighting effects. It's got some problems and takes some time to get into, but it should otherwise appeal to players who've enjoyed previous hack-and-slash action games, or those who like the idea of them.
The question remains: Is BLADE OF DARKNESS worth it? When you consider that you have four distract characters, with their own fighting styles and attributes to choose from (I recommend playing the game as the Amazon first), a cool multiplayer mode, and a single-player campaign that should keep you busy for many, many hours—then absolutely. Sure, it has control issues, and yes, it’s extremely difficult in the later levels, but its still a visual treat and should please any fantasy fan used to a world full of dwarves and minotaurs and the undead. If BLADE OF DARKNESS were a piece of meat lying next to a pile of bones in a deep underground tomb, I’d eat it.
Gamekult (Feb 23, 2001)
ESC Magazine (Apr 16, 2001)
It slices! It dices! It’s cartoon carnage unleashed on the desktop, and not a moment too soon. Just days after another high-school shooting spree lit up the evening headlines, along comes Blade of Darkness, a hack-and-slash action title that gets back to the basics, before BFG-9000 lust can consume us all.
GameGenie (2001)
Blade of Darkness delivers a competent display of melee combat. ed with stupendous graphics and a capable combat model, the shortcomings in sound and some features (strafing, for instance) make Blade of Darkness a good, but not great, title. If you enjoy games such as this, Blade of Darkness may just be for you. Just remember to beat the enemies with their own limbs.
CyberJoy (Apr 25, 2001)
Blade of Darkness tak naprawdę, nie wnosi nic nowego ani do świata gier akcji ani do RPGów, zapewnia jednak solidną porcję rozrywki dla każdego kto lubi tego typu gry.
ActionTrip (Mar 08, 2001)
Phew, there you go... If I were you, I'd give this one a miss... Unless you're really crazy about some gory chopping, nice textures, and light play... Hell, that's a good enough reason for many to buy this game, so if that's your main thing, then go ahead and buy Blade. However, if your expectations go a tad higher then that, I suggest you leave this title alone... Yeah, it's tough for the developers... but I wouldn't want you spending your hard-earned cash on something that doesn't fully justify its price tag either...
