BloodRayne is one of those games that you just have to decide about for yourself. While the action and graphics are cool to look at and play through, a poor excuse for a story and a general lack of depth to most of the game could turn off some gamers.
Computer Active (May 29, 2003)
Graphically, this is a solid 3D third-person performer. Animation is smooth, locations are nicely detailed, and reflections and lighting are used to good affect. Add eerie noises and flying limbs and BloodRayne pretty much hits the spot. We're pleased to say the enemies are also reasonably intelligent.

It is very well known that one needs to be either original or rebel if he or she wants to be noticed and appreciated. Producers chose the second way and didn't fail. It's true I lack also Oni's combos but this doesn't make it a bad game. What takes it down is a poor and unexploited story, the lack of stimulating puzzles and the repeatability feeling of your actions especially in the beginning of act 3 when you get the new list. Fortunately, the atmosphere created is exceptional with alternating tensed or relaxed moments to keep your interest alive. Locations are very well chosen and the levels are nor too linear neither too complex, being extremely well balanced from this point of view.

GameZone (Oct 13, 2003)
Overall, BloodRayne is a strong game with a few flaws. The combat can be boring unless you take it upon yourself to mix it up, and while that can be done easily enough, you never really have to put any of Rayne's cool abilities to work, which is a bit disappointing in itself. Some of the level design is pretty good, while some of it is merely okay. The graphics and sound are pretty solid though. I admit I had quite a bit of fun with BloodRayne, and while the game certainly isn't perfect, it's certainly above-average. Don't hesitate to check it out if you're interested.

Bloodrayne is a hard game to talk about in a review. I would say that the gameplay is where the title really shines. Unfortunately, the game has very low replay value - expect to beat the game in close to 15-20 hours. That's why it's a bit difficult to recommend this game for purchase.
Gameplay (Benelux) (May 30, 2003)
It's rayning men. Hallelujah!
IGN (Oct 14, 2003)
BloodRayne is not going to change the videogame industry, It has its problems -- some technical shortcomings here and there, some camera oversights and the occasional level layout difficulty, but I have to admit that I enjoyed playing through the 3D action title; that it delivered a fun little ride while it lasted.
ActionTrip (Jun 09, 2003)
In summary, great action, smooth controls and a very good 3D engine can only do so much for a game. Ultimately, you have to have a decent story in there and some good voice acting to make the entire thing believable and immersing. Without these crucial components an action adventure game can never truly become great. BloodRayne is a decent action-adventure that should provide players with some fun moments, albeit without any background or meaning to it. I had fun with it, but not as much fun as I could've had if the story and voice acting were even half-decent.
Worth Playing (Jun 26, 2003)
Overall, BloodRayne is a good adventure with a few flaws. The enemy AI is pretty dull. The combat can be boring unless you take it upon yourself to mix it up, and while that can be done easily enough, you never really have to put any of Rayne's cool abilities to work, which is a bit disappointing in itself. Some of the level design is pretty good, while some of it is merely okay. The graphics and sound are pretty solid, though. I had quite a bit of fun with BloodRayne, being able to use all of Rayne's cool abilities and progressing through the neat environments. While the game certainly isn't perfect, it is certainly above-average. Don't hesitate to check it out if you're interested.

GameSpy (Oct 23, 2003)
These problems and the lackadaisical level design keep BloodRayne from living up to its full potential, but if you just want loads of brainless, bloody action, this game won't let you down.
Factornews (May 29, 2003)
GameSpot (Oct 06, 2003)
There just isn't anything here that causes BloodRayne to rise above the crop of third-person action adventure games currently competing for space on your hard drive. While the blending of sex and over-the-top violence is initially intriguing for those who like their games on the spicy side, annoyances like the complete absence of originality and depth and the frustrating control system mean that there isn't much here to hold anyone's interest for long.
Computer Gaming World (CGW) (Jul, 2003)
BloodRayne was originally a console game, and its roots show. You can only save at the beginning of a level, which is an obvious attempt to add longevity to an otherwise short game. And it is short, which unfortunately means that the terrible opening is a good portion of the game. If you can get past the unresponsive controls and don't mind the overall tasteless but campless tone, BloodRayne still offers only a few hours of moderately entertaining carnage.
Just Adventure (Mar 18, 2003)
What grates me the most though is not the immaturity of the developers because, after all, they’re just trying to make a buck by appealing to the lowest common denominator. No, the bigger whores are the professional reviewers who are more than willing to overlook the gratuitous violence and rampant sexism that is prevalent in too many of today’s games as long as they have an enjoyable gaming experience and don’t have to struggle with the controls. But by doing so, they continue to perpetuate the stereotype that most gamers are drooling, addle-brained teenagers content to luxuriate in a sea of sex and violence.
