The actual gameplay can get a bit tedious if you’re not into hunting sims. Although CARNIVORES is not equipment intensive, there are a few toys to make the game easier. This is clearly a game about stalking rather than action; patience is the order of the day. But it ramps up nicely as you bag trophies to unlock new maps and prey. And certainly gamers will appreciate the irony that this modest member of GT’s line of budget games is ultimately far better than a certain other big-budget dinosaur game which need not be named (let’s just say it rhymes with “messpasser”).

Carnivores is the type of game you wish companies would make but never do. Except someone has made it, and the gameplay actually lives up to the incredible concept. I know this review has come across a bit "hypey" and that was not my intention, but the truth is I've just had loads of fun with this game, and have found very little wrong with it. If you have any interest in the hunting genre, played Trespasser and were disappointed, or just want to play a game the likes of which you've never experienced before, I highly recommend Carnivores.

Turok need not fear, Carnivores is here. Guaranteed to turn you into oil just like the dead dinosaurs that have captured our hearts and imaginations... First things first. Although Carnivores is a slow experience and an exercise in the virtue of patience, it is actually a well put-together game, or at least "simulation." WizardWorks set out to create a simulation that would incorporate what we presently know about dinosaur behavior and combine it with a Deer Hunter-esque experience. After all, WizardWorks is responsible for the best-selling Deer Hunter.

All in all, Carnivores is a surprisingly entertaining game that just doesn't have enough options to keep players busy for the long term. If you're in to hunting games, or you just like dinosaurs, you should definitely give this game a shot. If you're looking for a game that's going to offer you weeks and weeks of entertainment though, you're better off giving this one a miss.

Any way you look at it, a dinosaur hunting game is a brilliant idea: It's all the action, tactics, and strategy of a true hunting simulation, with none of the guilt. Turns out, Carnivores is even more than that, more than enough to be tantalizing yet not quite complete to be entirely satisfying. Still, not only is it a solid hunting simulation, but it features first-rate graphics and sound and a fully customizable challenge that'll test the mettle of both would-be hunters and action gamers alike, even as it leaves both categories wishing there were more to the game.

Carnivores does show its budget status in some ways: weapon choices are minimal, there are only six levels (three open to novices, the others to advanced or expert), and the environments can get pretty similar after a while. But the action elements take it a notch above most hunting titles, and one can imagine that triceratops is tastier than venison, especially at the price.

Carnivores is, unfortunately, one of those games that has a great idea, but fails to live up to that idea. The graphics brings the game down, which is truly disappointing. The sounds are average, and the gameplay is just like every other hunting game pretty much. The only outstanding feature of the game is the premise. The bottom line is while the game has a great idea, the graphics engine is not that great, and without a graphics accelerator it isn't even worth taking a look at. If the graphics engine was improved in a new version or a sequel, then this would be an awesome game.

With graphics that are very good for the genre (3Dfx is the only acceleration choice, however), superb sound, friendly menus, challenging and surprisingly fun gameplay, and the typical hunter series' low-low price, it's hard not to recommend Carnivores. Hunting comes to the masses, and this one has teeth!

As usual, Carnivores is part of WizardWorks’ affordable cascade of hunting games. If you hated Trespasser’s plot and puzzles and just want to get prehistoric on some dinosaur ass, give this game a look.

The gameplay is decent, something kind of rare from a hunting game. The reason behind this might be because hunting for the unbelievable makes it better. I can't think of anyone who has never had the fantasy to hunt for dinosaurs, like the ones they saw in Jurassic Park. Unfortunately, it still doesn't completely capture the full feeling like I'm really there. To conclude, it's worth a look, but it's not a keeper. If you have to decide between Carnivores and Trespasser, be sure to pick this for sure. You can spend the other thirty bucks you save on a model dinosaur.

Game Over Online (Dec 18, 1998)
Carnivores is not very fun in my opinion. Its repetitive, slow and lacks the adrenaline of a real hunt. This game feels like a mix between the action of Turok and the gameplay of Tresspasser. It just needs a little shot in the arm and some more options. The graphics are good but the sound is very disappointing. The lack of multiplayer also hurt my opinion. I don't recommend picking this one up unless you love hunting. Overall, Carnivores has the potential to stand out from the hunting genre but it turns out to be just like every other hunting title, and that's not good.
