Short, but sweeter than a pack of cigs and a clean pair of undies.
Just Adventure (Dec 21, 2004)
The only caveat I can offer is that this game is definitely for adults. It’s grim, violent, even sadistic at times. There is one sequence, for example, during which after knocking foes out, it is required that you literally stomp on their unconscious bodies until they’re dead. (I just pretended they were each Linda Tripp or Rosie Perez.) The game’s language is appropriately salty as well, with use of The F Word even (amusingly, I thought) in the tutorial!

What you've got here is a game that doesn't have a lot of high impact hype surrounding it, but it's just as good, if not better, than most FPS shooters available. Doom 3 can't even touch the class that exudes from this Director's Cut. If you have a PC that can handle it - even the high end ones might experience a hiccup in framerate or two - then I demand that you play it, even if you've played the Xbox version. Hats off to Diesel himself who had a hand in the development and to Starbreeze who are destined to create great things to come.

Game Watcher (Mar 25, 2005)
The only minor setback apart from the lack of multiplayer is that there aren’t too many different enemies and weapons in CoR. You will mostly be killing the prison guards. But it’s really almost not worth mentioning as all the characters and weapons that appear are truly rich and detailed. Nothing really has any value when standing against such a warm and inspirational game. If I ever wrote any review to help anybody decide to buy any game or not then I hope this review will make you walk to the shop and make the purchase.

Christmas is over, you're probably sick to death of Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Pirates! and half a dozen other games that were released in time for the Christmas rush. Why not pick up the best game you never heard of, to keep you busy through the slow, lonely months of January and February? There are very few games I recommend outright to anyone without hesitation. So let me just qualify: if you have any interest in first-person shooters, go get Riddick. Now.
GameSpot (Dec 10, 2004)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is one of those exceedingly rare types of games that delivers exceptionally high quality through and through and single-handedly ups the ante for all similar games. The fact that it also happens to be based on a movie franchise--something that's usually a bad sign for a game--makes it all the more incredible. You could call it a first-person shooter, but that would be selling it short. This ambitious game is played mostly from a first-person perspective, and it effectively and innovatively combines excellent shooting, hand-to-hand combat, stealth, and adventure elements with a solid story and truly outstanding, highly atmospheric graphics and sound.

Ist Riddick also besser?
GameZone (Dec 28, 2004)
This little gem of a game is brought to us by the kind folks at Starbreeze Studios, a team that ought to be commended for taking a big movie license and making a more-than-respectable game out of it. The Chronicles of Riddick debuted in theatres this year as a sequel to 1999’s Pitch Black – both films giving major screentime to action star Vin Diesel - and Starbreeze’s game, Escape from Butcher Bay, is a prequel to the events in Pitch Black. One doesn’t necessarily need to have seen either movie to appreciate the game, but there are of course allusions to the films that fans will undoubtedly notice.
ActionTrip (Dec 13, 2004)
In all, Starbreeze did a very good job of porting this game to the PC. If we look past the minor bugs, the combat feels intense and the controls feel perfectly natural. The Chronicles of Riddick just feels right on the PC and it's as if this was a PC game from the get-go. Bottom line is any self-respecting PC shooter fan should play Escape from Butcher Bay: I've enjoyed every minute of the original, just as I'm enjoying the PC iteration. The only downside to it--and this is really something that bugged it and me about the Xbox game as well--is that it offers very little long-term replay value, and leaves things wide open for a sequel, as well as not being very long. But even so, it's still a shooter experience you won't want to miss, trust me.

Last May when I was at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, one of the games that really blew me away was Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. The graphics looked great, the atmosphere seemed just right, and there was only one downside to the game for me: it was only going to be released on Xbox. However, a couple of months after the original Xbox release, a PC version saw the light and now I was able to step in the shoes of Riddick while being in front of my very own PC. If you want to know whether Riddick is still as cool as he was on Xbox, I suggest you read on.

Just Games Retro (May 17, 2012)
Escape From Butcher Bay’s reputation as one of the best movie games ever made feels rightfully earned. Like – dare I say – Deus Ex, it’s genre blending at its finest, taking the best parts of each system and making them accessible and smartly integrated. A beautiful engine and some excellent writing and acting don’t hurt either. You’ll need to keep in mind that it’s a stealth game more than it is a shooter, and there will be quiet sections where you won’t be snapping necks or breaking faces, but it’s a great time if you’re prepared to spend some time in Riddick’s shoes.
GameStar (Germany) (Dec, 2004)

Yahoo! Games (Dec 15, 2004)
Released on the Xbox back in January, Escape from Butcher Bay gathered significantly better reviews than the movie it's based on -- a very unusual phenomenon. The PC version of this action-stealth first-person shooter is even better, thanks to improved graphics and a ton of DVD-style extras. Both a licensed game and a port (a title that's been converted to another platform), it's outstanding and well worth your time.

To anyone who has played The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay it seems like stating the bleedin' obvious to conclude that it's one of the best five games of the year. A bit short compared to some of the epic games we've played lately, but the ten hours of entertainment packed in are probably as concentrated as we've ever seen. Never a dull moment; rich, constantly varied and surprising, technically excellent, well crafted and feeling somehow more imaginative and forward looking than probably any game sporting a film licence ever. And yet thanks to the film's late summer tanking, nobody cares. Sometimes licences work against games, and here's an example if ever we've seen one.
GameSpy (Dec 13, 2004)
Wait, wait. I know what you're probably thinking about The Chronicles of Riddick - Escape from Butcher Bay, especially if you didn't pay attention to the Xbox version released earlier this year. Games based on movie licenses are safely ignored by discriminating gamers, I know. That's a good instinct you should go with most of the time, but The Chronicles of Riddick is a rare exception. The folks at Starbreeze Studios based a first-person shooter around a character from a summer popcorn flick, but they also made it a really fun, really polished amalgam of action, RPG, and adventure genres.
FOK!games (Feb 03, 2005)
IGN (Dec 14, 2004)
When Pitch Black was released in 2000, I loved the vicious alien sci-fi adventure despite its strict adherence to a well-traversed formula of action horror flicks. Who knew the quiet debut of Vin Diesel as the next super bad-ass would kick off an entire universe around its indifferent murderous anti-hero? What's more, certainly nobody expected a knockout first-person shooter starring the now notorious anti-hero to sneak its way into stores and stab the delighted hearts of gamers. Which is exactly why The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay was so well received on the Xbox and has now been transferred over to the PC in good style and with new content.
PC Action (Dec 23, 2004)
Jolt (UK) (Jan 03, 2005)
Arriving on the Xbox in the middle of last year, Riddick was one of those genuinely pleasant surprises that turn up from time to time. It was a console FPS, and a movie-based one at that, yet it was full of gaming goodness and treated both the subject matter and the audience with the right level of respect. Oh and it had some real fancy graphics, yes indeed. Of course, now that the game has rather stealthily made its way onto the true home of the FPS, we can tell once and for all how it measures up against the rest of the crop.
PC Games (Germany) (Dec 15, 2004)

Although the system requirements are a little bit high, this really is the game for everyone. It's got the intensity of the best of the FPS genre, and a lot of creativity. If you are a fan of good games, give this game a good look.
Game Revolution (Dec 23, 2004)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is good for about 12-15 hours of compelling single-player gameplay, but unfortunately there isn't much keeping you coming back for more. A few other difficulty settings are here alongside some unlockable movies and commentary mode, but that's not much, and amazingly the game features no multiplayer at all. It's a shame. But despite the fact that The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay - Developer's Cut is a somewhat short, linear romp with few enhancements over the Xbox version, it still makes a good addition to any PC game collection with its awesome environments, savage melee combat and smooth pacing. So drop the soap and grab this game.
81 PC Gaming (Jan 16, 2005)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher’s Bay finally eliminates the stereotype that games parallel-marketed with movies are doomed to the ash bin of history. EBB begins its story by showing the player a few in-engine movies that basically tell you two things: Riddick is a classic movie tough-guy with a superpower--glow in the dark vision--who somehow gets captured for a bounty and is presently being delivered to a penal institution on a desert world known as Butcher’s Bay.
Factornews (Feb 15, 2005)
80 (Dec 14, 2004)
Riddick is a game that will be passed over by many gamers, expecting it to offer nothing more than under-par console FPS action. While the game is a console port and pretty short, it is an experience to remember and the additions made to the PC version make it a worthwhile purchase for any serious FPS fan.
80 (Nov 25, 2006)
