I remember reading once about the difference between a mere villain and an "arch-enemy." The arch-enemy is the one foe that is equal and opposite to the hero in every way, the one that gives him his greatest challenge. In an odd way, the hero needs his arch-enemy; his or her existence gives the hero's meaning. That same dynamic is very much in play with City of Villains. Sure, City of Villains can be purchased as a standalone product, and it'll still be fun. Like Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Moriarty or He-Man and Skeletor, though, City of Heroes and City of Villains need each other in order to be complete. Having the whole package makes the City of… games what they were always meant to be -- one of the best massively multiplayer online games available today.
Let's say it again. City of Villains is an exquisitely constructed expansion pack for anyone who liked City of Heroes, which also acts as a new entrance point into the world for the uninitiated. And the uninitiated really should, as it remains one of the finest online multiplayer games in existence.
The payoff, of course, is that the two games together are now an impressive collection that includes some exciting PvP possibilities, and the new game offers a sense of balance to that universe that the first game alone lacked. It's a trade-off I'm willing to live with, and, City of Villains' unique vibe makes it a worthwhile contender in the increasingly crowded space of the MMO world.
Doch dank zahlreicher Neuerungen und Verbesserungen wie den fünf frischen Archetypen, dem umfangreichen PvP-Update, dass z.B. Kämpfe von Helden gegen Schurken möglich macht sowie dem interessanten Basisbau können die Superschurken der Rogue Isles den heldenhaften Kollegen aus Paragon City den Rang ablaufen. Dass CoV (wenngleich eigenständig spielbar) auf den Superhelden aufbaut, merkt man allerdings auch an Mankos, die nicht behoben wurden. Dazu gehören z.B. die sich schnell wiederholenden Dungeon-Strukturen sowie die nur in Ausnahmefällen von Schema F abweichenden Fedex- oder Destroy-Missionen, die sich letztlich leider gar nicht so unterschiedlich spielen wie die in der Stadt der Helden. Das böse Element kommt etwas zu kurz, was den allgemeinen Spielspaß jedoch nur unwesentlich mindert. Daher gilt: Wer kurzweilige, ungezwungene und vor allem unkomplizierte Online-Action will, hat an City of Villains lange Freude.
The last and possibly best feature to all of this is that everything I just mentioned as new additions to City of Villains - the SG upgrades, the bases, the new graphics engine updates, all of it - each of these things is available to City of Heroes players now. So if you've ever wondered what its like to be on the wrong side of the law, with super powers bristling from your fingertips and an appetite for destruction, give City of Villains a try. You may just find your inner demons like to play games, too.
When it comes down to enjoyment level, if you enjoyed City of Heroes then I don’t see any reason for you to dislike the dark side of the force. While the missions are repetitive and linear, all you need to do to spice them up is play with a few friends, whether you met them in or out of the game. The graphics and sound aren’t anything to praise the Lord for, but they do their job. If you get bored of playing a certain class, then simply make another one and continue having fun. That’s what this game is all about. Fun. Sure, it’s definitely not for everyone, but then again, what game is?
City of Villains is a great game, but it's not fundamentally all that different from City of Heroes. There's a fine line between good and evil, and in this case who is on which side has a lot to do with who has the most skulls on their costume and the most garbage in their streets. Everything in City of Villains looks ominous, dirty, or just generally evil, but in its heart of hearts it's a dark mirror of City of Heroes. It's a pretty orderly chaos, and bad guys continue to take missions from contacts rather than rampaging through the city mugging pedestrians and setting kittens on fire at whim. For all the talk of villains being proactive and heroes being reactive, this is mostly all a matter of presentation rather than gameplay differences. Once all the trappings and narrative are stripped away there's really little difference between a rescue mission and a kidnapping.
I loved City of Villains, and the fact that if you already have City of Heroes, City of Villains doesn’t cost anything extra is an added bonus. Since they haven’t messed with the archetypes too much, I didn’t have the same resentment towards COV that I did with COH. I had characters that were nerfed to kingdom come because they were unbalanced in PVP. The game is very fun, and since it's not a fantasy game, it’s a pleasant change of pace from all the Everquests and World of Warcrafts out there. It does get repetitive but that can be avoided with a good group of friends to play with. The game is a hoot, and even more so if you didn’t have City of Heroes for you to base it on.
City of Villains is een prima game, maar doet wel erg denken aan zijn oudere broertje. Als je City of Heroes nog nooit hebt gespeeld is City of Villains een prima optie voor een erg vermakelijke MMORPG. Echter, als je CoH nu wel gezien hebt biedt de game waarschijnlijk te weinig nieuwe content om je nog echt te kunnen boeien. Voor fans van City of Heroes is er waarschijnlijk genoeg nieuws te vinden om je 30 euro waard te zijn. De game krijgt van mij uiteindelijk wel een mooi cijfer, maar is wellicht niet vernieuwend genoeg om oud CoH-spelers te interesseren. Houd ook in je achterhoofd dat als je City of Heroes nog niet speelt je nog vijftien dollar per maand aan abonnementskosten zal moeten betalen.
In conclusion the game works well and is a lot of fun, it doesn't feel quite as good as when we got to play superheroes for the first time, but there is still plenty in this game for most gamers. MMORPG gamers may be put off by the simplified system though this will make the game more accessible for all other players.
NCSoft has definitely created a niche market for themselves with the City Of series, except where to do they go from here? City of Mutants? City of Monsters? City of Accountants? In any event, don't hedge your bets on CoV playing completely different from what you've experience in CoH, since it was originally set to be an expansion. It's a fun game that will sometimes have you rollercoastering between "this is awesome!" and "this sucks!" but generally if you love all things comic booky, you're going to love spending time with these bad boys of science fiction.

Genretypisch geht alles mit der Charaktererstellung los. Tausende Kostümteile und Farben ergeben verdammt viele Kombinationsmöglichkeiten - kein Schurke gleicht also dem nächsten.
Weighing in at a penny less than nine pounds a month COH/V hasn't exactly become the budget MMO it perhaps should have. However, when you're having this much fun it's hard to be churlish about what amounts to still considerably less than a new game a month. And that's really the key to City of Heroes and City of Villains, despite looking a little dated and lacking some of the more complex features to be found in more modern MMOs what it does offer is a massive sense of fun and the feeling that everything is geared towards letting the player simply enjoy the feeling of being a super hero/villain rather than worrying about all the other things that can bog down more serious MMOs. This may put off as many people as it encourages but if you've ever dreamt of being in your own comic book then City of Heroes and City of Villains offer exactly the kind of wish fulfilment none of the officially licensed superhero games have been able to match.
City of Villains ist für mich vor allem aufgrund der neuen Klassen interessant, weil sich das Spielgefühl im Vergleich zum Original einfach unterscheidet. Vor allem der Mastermind hat es mir angetan, da ich Pet-Klassen einfach mag. Auf Dauer ist mir City of Villains aber zu eintönig.
Of course, affecting that sneering tone, mowing down self-righteous do-gooders, and enacting insane plans for world domination is exactly what City of Villains' gameplay aims for. It doesn't always find its mark--you don't necessarily feel like much of a villain, and it's easy to get slogged down in missions that don't feel very different from City of Heroes. Still, if you're willing to commit to the spirit of the setting, City of Villains completes the circle of comic book adventure and makes it awfully fun to get in touch with your inner evil mastermind.

If you're more into character customization than actually feeling evil, and liked City of Heroes, you might get into to what City of Villains has to offer. As long as you don't go in expecting any huge leaps in innovation, you should be reasonably happy with what it adds to the experience.
It's just too bad that things get old kinda fast, and the more interesting mission sequences take a while to get to. I would still recommend CoV to the casual gamer who wants to dip their toes into an MMO, but I think those who are looking for the next big thing to dedicate their passion to would be better served by sticking to what they already have.

Décors désolés, missions politiquement incorrectes et violence à tous les coins de rues instaurent une ambiance très particulière. Grâce à sa prise en main facilitée et à son contenu enrichi (PvP héros contre vilains, construction de bases), le jeu s'adresse aussi bien aux débutants qu'aux joueurs confirmés. Bref, malgré son aspect un peu répétitif sur le long terme, City of Villains est un soft que l'on vous encourage à découvrir.
City of Villains contains enough new material to make the expansion a must-buy for current CoH subscribers. Newbies can play either way, but most players will eventually want both games to maximize PvP features.
As you progress with a character, there are many new story arcs to explore. If a player gets tired of a character, they can create another one. The gameplay changes based on the archetype and powersets that you choose for your Villain. Strategies need to be modified to shift the playstyle, and to keep from being squashed by an enemy. With the various missions, archetypes, street-fighting, and PVP, the gameplay is very lengthy and can go as long as the player chooses to go. If you have the urge to unleash your inner villain, then join Lord Recluse in his fight against the heroes
It was easy to get right into it and get involved. You select targets, click on the power you want to use on them and kill them off. There is an effortless feeling of jumping and gliding. If you get hurt you take some green crosses, or if you die you wake up in the hospital. After you kill a few bad guys in a mission you go and port to the next zone. It has a a relaxing pace. The bright costumes and the originality that players have makes the game interesting. It isn't immersive because it is a spoof and it isn't meant to be taken seriously.
Oddly enough, some gamers were expecting a massively multiplayer GTA-like experience with City of Villains, where they could mug, carjack and terrorize everyday citizens - Flexing their villainy in front of other online players. Unfortunately, current MMOs can't handle that level of world interaction. Instead, villainy in CoV ascends in the same statistical manner as heroism in City of Heroes: by rising through the hierarchy of the city's most influential factions, completing tasks for them and developing your reputation, You don't feel particularly nefarious for a good portion of the early and mid-level game, but CoV is nonetheless an eminently playable online RPG.

The initial differences between City of Heroes and City of Villains is not that great, in fact, the fundamentals are basically the exact same. City of Villains will undoubtedly appeal to any player who is a fan of City of Heroes. The idea of being an evil personal might wear off, and the quickly completed missions and repetitive environments could have players losing interest in the game after awhile. Whatever the game encompasses, I was just excited to play the bad guy for once!
Im direkten Vergleich unterscheidet sich City of Villains kaum von seinem Vorgänger: Ich erledige dieselben abwechslungsarmen Quests, kämpfe gegen die immer gleichen Feinde und baue meine Superkräfte wie gewohnt aus. Zugegeben, ein paar Experimente hätten die Entwickler ruhig ausprobieren können. Trotzdem habe ich mit City of Villains viel Spaß: Das liegt neben der ungewöhnlichen Charakterentwicklung vor allem an den gelungenen PvP-Kämpfen. Besonders beim Basiseditor fühle ich mich wie ein Kind im Bauklötzchenhaufen. Tipp: Holen Sie sich City of Heroes dazu, das kostet inzwischen nur noch 20 Euro.
Man muss nicht arbeitslos sein, um in City of Villains groß zu werden. Ein paar Stunden in der Woche reichen zum Spielen: Der Schurke gedeiht trotzdem, als würde er Popeye-Spinat futtern. Doch Anspruchsvolle werden die Tiefe vermissen, für die das Genre so berüchtigt ist: Es gibt weder Handwerksberufe noch die Jagd nach einzigartigen Gegenständen. Und Dauer-Prügeleien verschaffen langfristig keine Befriedigung, zumal, wenn sie in solch belanglosen Instanzen wie hier stattfinden. Charakter-Design und Comic-Atmosphäre sind den Entwicklern zwar vorzüglich geglückt, aber beim Schaffen glaubwürdiger Welten können sie von Blizzard lernen.
Old, decrepit, and more than a little ugly. Villains isn't helped by its failure to capture a similarly enjoyable campy atmosphere, despite the subject matter. On the other hand, the game falls well short of outright sucking, so if you must be a villain, you'll surely get your money's worth.
City of Villains is a great idea for a game. Making comic book heroes come alive on the computer screen and interact in a dynamic environment is a concept that will sell some games. The character creation is complete, but the rest of the game is nothing special that separates it from other MMORPGs. Guild Wars is very similar in the execution of the game, but Guild Wars is actually slightly more polished and definitely more user friendly. The controls in City of Villains are not to my liking and the stiff system requirements make my computer cry. Guild Wars is just a more polished and more enjoyable game, and after you get past the differences on the surface, they are actually very similar. Overall, Guild Wars is much more likable, and the fact that there is no monthly fee for Guild Wars adds to its desirability. City of Villains is OK, but there are other, less expensive games that provide and equal or slightly better gaming experience.
Not only does this game have great gameplay, but it has addictive gameplay. My first session was well over six hours in length, and subsequent sessions have only been cut short due to the need to get some sleep before work in the morning. There is something truly satisfying about watching your character grown and gain more powers and abilities, and you can’t help but want to get back to the computer so you can get that next level or complete that next mission. Still, the addictiveness is going to partially be based on how much you enjoy these types of games. While CoV does have a pretty solid structure to it, it doesn’t hold your hand and lead you along. You are responsible for choosing your own missions and finding a group to adventure with. Some people may find this a little overwhelming, or get bored quickly because there is a seeming lack of a progressive storyline. For my own part, I’m hooked. And I think most of you will be as well.
All that said, the game definitely takes its place in the halls of infamy as one of the single most thrilling MMO experiences out there now. The raw catharsis of robbing banks, kidnapping innocents, and basically acting naughty in a virtual world while dressed up as the result of getting Jack Kirby and Stan Lee stoned-- there's little out there that beats it. Only the rush of adrenaline as you see the day-glo fuschia spandex and bright purple polka dots round the corner and identify your arch-nemesis, Fancy Man, as the fool they've sent to stop you-- only that can compare. Yeah, Cryptic still hasn't put a fashion advisor in the costume designer section.
