Gameguru Mania (Mar 04, 2001)
The graphics in this game are very impressive, the backgrounds are very well detailed and effects of fires, snow and rain are very well done. I strongly recommend you to set a higher resolutions with 32-bit color and play at night in a darkened room. Also sounds, particularly the ambient ones, are used very effectively to add to the atmosphere. Only surprising thing about this game is that there is no music at all, only in the menu screens. It's because all of the audio is focused on you listening to your environment during the game play to be more depressed :) But I bet you won't miss music during the gameplay . Clive Barker's Undying is an excellent done game, I hope this title isn't the last from Clive Barker. For me is Undying one of those games that I want to savor and not finish too soon.
GamePro (US) (Feb 21, 2001)
Where Undying really shines is in the details. You wield weapons in your left hand, and spells in your right, and the arsenal you collect is perfectly balanced so that you're always finding new and interesting ways to make your two hands work in tandem. The Scrye spell is an absolutely brilliant little addition, enabling you to see horrifying parts of the world just beyond the edge of reality. It would?ve been simple to turn Undying into a straightforward first person shooter. Instead, EA has crafted a complex gothic horror story that's worth dying for.
Gamer's Pulse (Mar 16, 2001)
Clive Barker’s Undying is one of the few games that made me lose sleep, not because I was playing it all night, but because I didn’t want to turn the lights off. I have loved the horror genre in film, literature and games all my life and I rarely react or get all jiggy, but Undying is a game that will haunt me for a very long time. If you want to spend some serious quality time with the undead then pick up this little darlin’. Just be prepared to sleep with the lights on for a week or so.
Undying is a great game that does an incredible job of bringing the player into its world. Just don't play it alone late at night...
With only minor flaws, Clive Barker's Undying is one of the first truly must-have games this year. An intriguing plot, solid gameplay, and damned creepy execution all combine to make a truly memorable experience. Just remember to play after midnight, with all the lights out, in a house that creaks a lot. It will definitely be an experience you will not forget.

This is a dark, dark game, both in appearance and in atmosphere. Your character is psychic investigator and World War I veteran Patrick Galloway. Galloway has come to the Ireland estate of his former unit commander, the terminally ill Jeremiah Covenant, in response to an urgent plea for help. Seems Covenant's family wants to kill him. This is especially bothersome because they're already dead.
Gaming Age (Mar 30, 2001)
There was little talk about Undying (what there was came from Clive Barker's attachment) leading up to its release, but now it seems to be the talk of the town. First person shooter fans, adventure fans and game fans should definitely check out what DreamWorks has to offer with Undying. It combines an atmosphere that will have you changing your shorts at least twice per playing session with beautiful visuals and balanced gameplay that requires some actual thinking to make it through successfully.
GameSpot (Feb 16, 2001)
Clive Barker's Undying is a very well-done, polished, and memorable action game. Its horror elements are convincing and effective, and its action elements are interesting and distinctive. The game's great setting and its characters give it a real sense of context and purpose, and yet its intense action sequences never leave this focus. Undying would be even better if it featured a multiplayer mode that matched the high quality of the rest of the game (the developers are reportedly planning to add a multiplayer option in a downloadable patch). But even without one, Undying will undoubtedly provide more than enough harrowing thrills to encourage you to play through the single-player game repeatedly.

In short, the game is a must buy for every action loving gamer. The atmosphere is awesome, this is one of the only truly scary games out there (even Blood 1 doesn't come close to this baby, and Blood 1 in fact was scary). The audio, graphics, level design, plot, animated sequences and level design are great. The action is great. Only possible downsides are lack of multiplayer (however, unofficially, multiplayer support is actually planned to be introduced in one of upcoming patches for Undying), the UT engine is simply not enough at times and a small selection of weapons. However even with all this mentioned, this game is still one of the top FPS titles ever produced. Well, now that I am done with this review, if you'll excuse me, I am going to play some more Undying.
Brawo Clive! Brawo Dreamworks! Oby tak dalej.
IGN (Feb 20, 2001)
All in all I was really impressed with Undying's style and gameplay. Although it's a rather short single-player experience with no multiplayer options (there is a multiplayer patch in the works already), I had a great time playing it through the first time and I'm already going through again to look for things I might have missed the first time. Mechanically it's not the best shooter around, but the atmosphere and edge-of-your-seat suspense more than make up for the slightly awkward controls. I can't think of a game that's made me feel so much suspense and freaked me out as much. If you're looking for a deep, chilling shooter with a lot of weapon and spell variety, you should be very happy with, as well as horrified by, Clive Barker's Undying.
Game Over Online (Mar 13, 2001)
According to the creators of the game, the effect they were going for was Resident Evil meets Half-Life. Actually, not to contradict everything I’ve said, that’s not a bad summation. I found a lot of interesting information on the development process of this game, including Clive Barker’s deep involvement in the entire process: from artwork, to writing to doing sound effects and voice acting (the voice of the sibling Ambrose). Looking at the big picture, meaning the game as, well, a game, I’d have to say that it was an enjoyable experience. FPS fans will be delighted, as will adventure game fans, horror genre fans and the generally quest-obsessed. On that note, if you decide to get this game, load it up, turn off the lights, crank the speakers and enjoy ... BOO!
Clive Barker's Undying is a polished story-driven adventure-oriented first-person shooter. I felt a kind of primal fear playing it through that I have not ever had before with a computer game, and it is truly a horror fan's most delectable nightmare. Its mysterious story is immersive, its action riveting, its strategy and tactics challenging, and its characters fascinating. This offering is full of unorthodox twists not normally found in its genre, and that keeps the play experience fresh and exciting. Judged in the context of adventure titles, Clive Barker's Undying is a wonderful but nonetheless somewhat flawed release, with linearity and weak puzzles the primary limitations; but judged in the context of first-person shooters, this offering is one of the very best single-player games ever produced.
GameSpy (Mar, 2001)
In this reviewer's humble opinion, Undying is a game definitely worth buying. Good story, good level design, and great graphics all make for one hell of a ride.
PC Games (Germany) (Mar 07, 2001)
ActionTrip (Mar 05, 2001)
Finally, the AI can get a bit dodgy at times. I can understand if some of the monsters are stupid, but the human opponent AI (the Trusandi) don't pay much attention to the fact that you just ran around a corner with a shotgun to ambush them, and they'll stumble straight on your barrel. Also, the routine that is supposed to make the Trusandi warriors take cover mostly gets them stuck, so that you can easily pick them off with the weapon of your choice. Having a good AI in place is critical for a successful FPS, and while Undying won't amaze you in this department, it's good enough not to cause any major disappointments, even despite the aforementioned slip-ups. That about wraps it up, folks... Final verdict: this is one title that single player FPS wouldn't want to miss. Despite a few irksome drawbacks this is one helluva horror action game, and I hope titles like this one just keep on coming... I'll be a happy man.

Gamezilla (Mar 20, 2001)
While Undying certainly won't redefine the genre, it has definitely raised the bar as far as first person shooters are concerned. The combination of magic and weapons is unique and, meshed with excellent graphics and sound, makes this a game a winner. The plot is strong and characters are fresh and exciting, and I honestly believe that a stronger selection of weapons would have made Undying a "must buy." The game has few faults and deserves credit for trying new and different approaches to a tiring genre. My hat's off to the team at EA and Clive Barker for making a scary and twisted game.
PC Zone (Aug 13, 2001)
Undying is not without its faults, but it remains one of the most unsettling first-person shooters we've ever come across. A multiplayer patch is expected to follow in the next few months but since this was always meant to be a single-player experience, you won't really notice its absence. Hopefully, this game has whet Barker's appetite and will encourage him to get involved in a project from the outset. We've said many times that games are still in their infancy, and that is certainly true of their narrative and emotional engagement. Perhaps Barker can help them to grow up.

Don’t turn out the lights, and whatever you do, don’t play it alone. In typical Clive Barker fashion, Undying is a suspense-filled fright-fest that keeps you on the edge of your seat and terrified of what ghoulish surprise may lurk around the next corner. Not only will unexpected enemy attacks make you jump out of your seat more than you care to, the eerily ambient sounds and disturbing visual content will fill your head with uncertainty and fear. This may just be another FPS, but it packs a wallop. The animations are superb, the environmental decor is simply breathtaking, and the gameplay is fluid and challenging. Outside of the gameplay realm, the cutscenes really don’t stand out or tie into the demonic theme at hand. However, the characters are interesting and the plot is quite perplexing. Needless to say, this is a must for horror fans.
FiringSquad (Jun 04, 2001)
Undying is a lot of single player fun. The horror aspect is pulled of very well, and you'll find yourself jumping out of your seat often. The sound effects play tricks on your head, and may even make you jumpy in the real world. I haven't had so much fun being scared than the last time I went to a Republican fundraiser. If you like FPS games, horror movies, horror novels, or action games in general you should check out Undying. I wouldn't recommend Undying to younger gamers. There are plenty of disturbing images and situations to mess up a kid's head (like one scene where a statue begs you to kill it by shooting its heart out). Great atmosphere and bone-chilling imagery, but today's games have been getting enough of a bad rap about destroying the moral fiber of our youth. At least this one only advocates the unmitigated slaughter of the undead.
PC Gamer Brasil (May, 2001)
As aggravating as these shortcomings can be, they aren’t enough to keep UNDYING from being the first must-play shooter of 2001. Turn off the lights, turn up the sound, and prepare for a scarifyingly good time.
Solid graphics, great sound, easy gameplay. It’s an FPS worth having unless you really hate being scared. How does it compare to Counter-Strike, you may ask yourself? Apples and oranges, baby...apples and oranges.
FZ (Oct 18, 2006)
Make no mistake, though, Undying is a lot of fun and is highly recommended for anyone who loves first-person shooters. Or if you love games with a spooky atmosphere but shy away from action games, set it on the easy level and enjoy the atmosphere. Either way, as a lot of reviewers seem to forget, it is still all about fun no matter what the genre.

Clive Barker's Undying is certainly a unique first-person shooter and despite the feeling that this particular variety of horror and suspense seems a tad contrived at times, gameplay is actually fresh and warrants a good look by fans of both first-person shooters and survival horror.
Gamekult (Mar 05, 2001)
Clive Barker's Undying is a different sort of game, one where story dominates the action, but in this case to a fault. The art designers have made a visually impressive and aurally stunning experience but it is wasted on a game that most people will not have the patience to play – I certainly don't have it or the time. I can only say that I did not like this game very much and relish the opportunity to begin forgetting about it. However, there are some out there who are big enough fans of Mr. Barker's work to get Undying just because his name is attached to it.
