Overall Cossacks II: Battle for Europe is another solid release from GSC Game World – a company that seems to know this period very well. Battle for Europe is a detailed and historically accurate look at the age of grand armies of Europe and the classic clash of Empires. While not offering anything particularly new or groundbreaking it succeeds in providing an entertaining and thoughtful strategy game for those tired of meaningless tank rushes.

The appeal of Cossacks II lies in the battles. Wheeling your troops around to get as many rifles in range as possible and ordering them to open up at the exact right time is key. It's a puzzle game in that respect, one of timing and placement, exacerbated by factors like morale and fatigue. As nothing has changed here, Cossacks II remains an enjoyable re-enactment of wholesale slaughter as any you could hope for. If you missed the game before, then this is a great introduction to one of gaming's great mid-table franchises. Fans who laid out the full whack for the original release should be more wary, however.

In der Summe bietet Cossacks 2: Battle for Europe nichts bewegend Neues - aber mehr von dem, was das Hauptspiel bei Strategiefans bereits beliebt gemacht hat.

Given that few historical RTS games have exploited the Napoleonic era, Cossacks II: Battle for Europe still has something of an edge on its competitors in that it's the only game that manages to pull large scale formation battles off with relative ease. Despite some AI issues, dated graphics, cheesy music and roughly translated voiceovers, its still a challenging, but most importantly different, RTS game, and while this expansion doesn't really expand in many new areas, it does manage to provide a good few hours of additional enjoyment over The Napoleonic Wars. It's a bit like Sharpe, only not quite as Yorkshire and great deal more macho.

To conclude, this game is good, but it just doesn’t do all that it aims to achieve, but a fairly enjoyable title nonetheless that should be on any RTS’ fans wishlists. In addition, this is good value for an expansion pack, as you are getting an improved version of the first game with new bits and bobs thrown on for good measure to sweeten the deal.

Cossacks II is back as hard and with as much attention to detail as ever. Anyone who overlooked the original and has been looking for a RTS that isn’t a Warcraft or C&C clone (or another bloody WWII game) then Cossacks is for you. Don’t be put off when you can’t complete the campaign in twenty minutes; the game engine is great and the AI really gives you a run for your money. Those who’ve already got the original should think hard before they buy though, as apart from a few little touches it’s not all that different from the original.

And that pretty much sums up Battle for Europe. It's essentially Napoleonic Wars with a small amount of new content. There's not a lot here to recommend if you already own Napoleonic Wars, though if you are a newcomer to the series and have a yen for early 19th century warfare, you might want to give it a try.

Overall, despite my lacking interest for the Cossacks game titles, I was surprisingly impressed by the game play (not that I can remain patient for long with turn-based games), though slightly disappointed at the immense strain the game causes to lower end systems. However that being said, if you are looking for an interesting new strategy game but don’t want to pay out that much, the fact that this expansion still acts as a stand alone game (though does not have a very expansive campaign mode) this would be something to try out.

The antiquated visuals would be easier to stomach if hot Nineteenth Century prospects like Napoleonic Total War 2 (a visually stunning R:TW mod due within the next couple of weeks) and HistWar: Les Grognards (a promising hardcore 3D Napoleonic wargame with an autumn ETA) didn't exist. Although both of these titles will probably have their fair share of throbbing haemorrhoids, I predict both will turn-out to be more deserving of your time than the competent, complacent Cossacks II: Battle For Europe.

The improved tactical A.I. almost justifies the price of admission to Cossacks II: Battle for Europe but fails to make up for the larger issues. Yes, it's now able to spar with a decent player, but the unbalanced and visually unappealing Cossacks II core hasn't changed beyond that.

Cossacks II: Battle for Europe is for true strategy war game players. I simply cannot see anyone getting into this game who doesn’t like games of this ilk. It looks old, it plays old, the music is just annoying, the cut scenes are poor, the video sequences of amateur re-enactors, and the sound doesn’t utilize modern systems like EAX. If you like a hard battle with a challenge and you have a lot of time on your hands; you may enjoy this for a while – however, they could have just patched this all into a massive update to Cossacks II and been done with it, or made a whole new game out of it with a modern engine.
