Game Over Online (Mar 21, 2002)
I strongly recommend this game. It is the best, most enjoyable and most addictive game I have seen in 19 years. If you enjoy fantasy role playing games, then I urge you to check this game out. I’ve had some truly hysterical game moments of the kind that I usually only see in paper and pencil role-playing games. Please take the comment about addictiveness as fair warning, though. People may become concerned about your health. I was cutting sleep to play this game for the first two weeks I had it. I’ve backed off some, but my wife is still somewhat concerned. (She is also campaigning for a second phone line or a DSL connection, so there may be additional costs to the game beyond the obvious.)

Don’t take anything I’ve said in this review as a reason not to buy this game without hesitation. This is the closest so far to the perfect online fantasy role-playing game, and I have every expectation that it will be just that over the coming months.

Overall this game looks to be a hit. Each time I have logged on during prime time since the game was released, there have been roughly 8 - 12 thousand others playing as well. By itself that would seem to indicate the success that this came has already attained.

Dark Age of Camelot brings revolutionary gameplay and a load of unique features to the MMORPG genre. For those who have been waiting for the next standard in the MMORPG universe, I'm pleased to announce that your wait is over. WARNING: This game will SUCK your life away!
GameSpot (Oct 26, 2001)
The fact is, as an online role-playing game, Dark Age of Camelot surpasses any such game to date and promises to remain the finest in its class for a long time. Dark Age of Camelot is based on historical legends and folk tales that grew stronger, more pervasive, and more influential as they were appropriated by different cultures and passed from generation to generation. In just this fashion, Dark Age of Camelot takes inspiration from past achievements in the genre and uses these as the building blocks to achieve an even greater goal.
The gameplay’s the thing, though, and in Dark Age it’s the best I’ve yet experienced in an online RPG. The combat and magic system offer interesting tactics, and the varied classes provide a lot of fascinating group dynamics. Sorcerers can screw with the heads of monsters while the Armsman hacks at them and the Cleric heals and the Rogue backstabs, all while the Wizard readies the big fireball to finish the battle. All online games are works in progress and Mythic needs to address some problems, If they do and continue to add content as promised, King Arthur’s crown should fit them well.

Dark Age of Camelot comes with a completely free thirty day trial that does not require a credit card. That's right; you can buy the game and play for a whole month without having to enter anything of that sort. So what are you waiting for? Dark Age of Camelot has proved that is has what it takes to play with the veterans of the online RPG world. Its innovations and improvements over some of the usual aspects of other online RPG's make it well deserving of a trial period. This one comes highly recommended from Bahamut.
Summary: Even though the plusses way outweigh the minuses, if you look closely at many of the plusses you will see that they are geared only towards making it easier to level and acquire items - which is why I called Dark Age of Camelot 'EverQuest light.' The game is a ton of fun to play, and DAoC has well earned the 4 and a half GiN gems even though it is not number one in its class.
GameZone (Jul 21, 2002)
Dark Age of Camelot is terrific. It is well conceived, features solid graphics and sound, has incredible depth, and delivers multiplayer action that is unique. It will face competition with upcoming releases, but if gamers are looking for an immersive and addictive experience, this is it.
IGN (Nov 02, 2001)
The final thing I really need to mention is a very minor part of the game, but it is extremely handy. When you log in to the front end there is a little option under the username/password fields called "Quick Entry." This little option keeps track of your most-played characters and allows you to jump right in as one of those characters, completely bypassing the server selection screen.

FiringSquad (Nov 20, 2001)
This is exactly what makes Dark Age a great game and worthwhile experience. It may not be without its flaws and could use some fleshing out, but there is no other MMORPG we would rather play. We would also like to point all massively multiplayer game developers to look closely at what Mythic Entertainment did right in its launch of Dark Age of Camelot. Not one of the development team has uttered 'Oh, we just never expected it to get so big so quick - our equipment was not ready for this kind of assault', or anything like that. They were ready, they knew what to expect and their game and servers were ready from day one.
GameStar (Germany) (Dec 05, 2001)

Overvall, Dark Age of Camelot's latest expansion, "Trials of Atlantis" really hits the mark as a value-added addition to the current game. Mythic has pulled out all the stops from graphics, sound and gameplay perspectives. An updated graphics engine is a feast for the eyes, appropriately crafted music tickles the auditory senses, bold quest encounters quicken the heart rate and fabulous new items satisfy the treasure seeker. The only downside that one can glean from all of the new abilities available in this expansion is that players who don't upgrade may be left by the wayside in some of the most intense and amazing innovations in the MMO genre. One can only imagine what other secrets await the inhabitants of "Camelot" in the future.

The Age (Aug 08, 2002)
Quests can be undertaken and creatures fought without worrying about encountering some online player with so many hit points that you haven't a chance. Once your character is sufficiently developed, you can enter a disputed zone and take on the other gamers - this is where the serious headtohead gaming begins. There is, however, a downside. Access to the game website requires further payments and you will need an Internet plan that gives you plenty of online time and megabytes to download.
RPGFan (Jan 17, 2002)
DAoC has the potential to be a terrific MMORPG, once the high level content is as polished and well rounded as the lower levels. Until then, it's going to be a bumpy ride, and I can't make a solid recommendation.

If you love PvP and can put up with a purely one dimensional experience then absolutely try this game out. If you are however looking for an immersive MMORPG with great PvE, then ultimately this is not the game for you.
75 (May 09, 2011)
DAoC continues to offer one of the best PvP systems of any MMORPG, and if players take the time to explore one or all of the three realms they will be rewarded with elaborate maps, satisfying graphics and a true variety in monsters. The DAoC community continues to be helpful, active and encouraging; plenty of guilds are happy to take both newcomers and returning players. If you are looking for a flawless UI, look elsewhere; if you want satisfying PvE, bring a few friends to the game. But if you are looking for fantastic PvP with a refreshing twist, definitely give DAoC at least a free trial download’s worth of time.
Thunderbolt Games (Mar 21, 2004)
The MMORPG genre hasn't matured yet and Dark Age of Camelot is a noticeable sign of this. While the non-linear world, character selection and different realms are there, it never feels that exciting or engaging. Apart from the interface, the game shows little innovation and a distinct visual style is nowhere to be seen. I'm sure that in five or ten years time, we'll look back at Camelot and chuckle about how far the genre has come in that time. The game isn't really bad, it just fails to motivate or stimulate the player in the way that other titles do.
