Divinity: Original Sin is a role-playing game that harkens back to an earlier generation of the genre using an isometric view, turn-based combat, extensive crafting options, a complex story with variable dialogue, and a focus on systems in the game world for the player to shape instead of scripting the experience. Set in the Rivellon world, Original Sin takes place 12 centuries before Divine Divinity, the first game in the saga, and thousands of years after Divinity: Dragon Commander.
Many centuries ago, a powerful magic called the Source was used to heal people and make good, but it became tainted, and the Sourcerers started to use the Source to hurt and destroy. The Council of Seven, rulers of Rivellon, outlawed usage of the Source and sent out Source Hunters to investigate each time Source usage was suspected in order to eliminate the menace. The main characters are two Source Hunters sent by the Council to the city of Cyseal, where Councillor Jake was murdered.
While the game can be played alone by controlling the two characters and their companions, the game is made with cooperative gaming for two players in mind. The dialog choices and the actionsof a player modify their reputation, and therefore, affects how people will react to them. Combat in the game is turn-based, with action points, spells combos, and friendly fire.
Divinity: Original Sin has reached 1 million sold copies worldwide just before the release of its Enhanced Edition in October 2015. It was Larian's fastest selling title at the time, moving 500,000 copies in the first three months after it came out. Out of these only 10% were sold in retail, while most of them were purchased on Steam according to the Larian Studios founder, Sven Vincke.
