Dungeon Siege cannot fail to impress you. The interface is wonderfully easy and uses visual clues galore. Icons flash, such as the journal icon which flashes to let you know that something has been added to it, and text labels can be attached to items that are on the floor. These labels make objects far easier to see and are a must if you are playing the game at some of the higher resolutions where the objects can appear really small. Best of all though is the fact that everything in the game is subtitled. The cutscenes and the conversations have been wonderfully subtitled and this is made even better by the fact that for the conversations, dialogue boxes have been used. These dialogue boxes allow you to scroll back through the conversations and must be clicked off for the game to continue.

With all the hype surrounding the Xbox, its good to see that Microsoft is also still in the business of publishing top-quality PC games. Dungeon Siege's destiny is to be a hit for the company, and will probably make most people's top ten favorite game's list after only a few minutes of play.

Dungeon Siege is everything an Action-RPG should be. There’s a metric assload and a half of fighting, starting in the first five seconds of the game. The monsters are original and fun to cut down. The character classes are easy to understand and leveling makes sense. There are no obscure rules you need to know before playing. And best of all, there are a lot of cool weapons and items to find. Toss this all in with a fabulous engine, spread it out over 100 hours of gameplay (single and multi), and what more could you ask for?

The bottom line is this: If you are the kind of player that demands a story so epic that it will invade your dreams at night. If you must have a game with an ending so profound that it makes you want to live your life a different way. If you lust for a story that not only awakes a dormant part of you, but enhances that part to be the dominant force in your being, then Dungeon Siege may not be the game for you. But if you can look past a comparatively mediocre story and see the game for what truly makes it great, superb graphics and sound, awesome gameplay, and flawless controls, Dungeon Siege will likely become a game that you can boast owning. It is certainly one of the better games available at this time and would be an excellent addition, or starting point, to any gamer's collection.

Overall this is a cracking game which really is the new benchmark for action RPGs. The Gas Powered Games team has pushed the evolution of game interfaces into pleasingly usable and useful territory and have created the most enjoyable fantasy world that I have ever had the equipment to rampage through. This is not a technical demo, this is a great game, with solid gameplay driving a compelling gaming experience, and now I've beaten Civ III at monarch level I'm off to beat up some Krug monsters online.
Old PC Gaming (Sep 18, 2015)
Little clever design tidbits like this are all over the place, and are too numerous to count. Dungeon Siege's only shortcoming is its generally repetitive nature - while great in short spurts, it quickly becomes evident that the game's main gimmick consists of throwing ever larger hoards of monsters your way. This is typical of all ARPG games, so one could hardly blame Dungeon Siege for giving people what they want - lotsa creatures to smite, stuff to hoard and goodies to buy. In this regard it's a real winner.
If there’s a knock against Dungeon Siege, it’s that it lacks a kind of oomph of personality to set it apart, something Diablo II had going for it in spades. The monsters are fierce, but lack the scary sounds and animations of the Blizzard games. The cut-scenes aren’t bad. but they’re flat compared to the animated opuses of Diablo II. But in the big picture, these are quibbles. Dungeon Siege is easily one of the best, most enjoyable games of the year. In what is shaping up as a banner year for PC gaming, Dungeon Siege is one of the unquestionable must-haves.

Dungeon Siege is one of the best games to come out this year. The graphics and sound are fantastic, and the gameplay is fast and exciting. If you consider yourself a fan of Action RPGs, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up.
Game Over Online (Apr 10, 2002)
Dungeon Siege, from first-time developer Gas Powered Games, is an action role-playing game, except that maybe the word “action” doesn’t do it justice, and “adrenaline-rushed non-stop massacre-athon” is more appropriate. That’s because Dungeon Siege takes a page from the Diablo series of games and gives you hordes of creatures to kill. If it walks, crawls, flies, swims, or shambles, it’s probably in the game, and you’ll probably get to kill it -- a lot. But Dungeon Siege isn’t just a Diablo clone. It uses an impressive 3D engine to bring its expansive world to life, and it does an effective job of allowing you to control up to eight characters as you hack and slash your way through the game. But Dungeon Siege does have one overriding thing in common with Diablo: it’s a lot of fun to play.

GameSpy (Apr 12, 2002)
Overall Dungeon Siege does manage to live up to the hype and should keep you doing your best to make extinct every creature that walks the woods while saving the land from a dangerous and ominous threat! The graphics are well polished and the game so addictive that it will keep you hacking, slashing, and casting for a good long while. And, when it is finally over, you'll still be hungry for more.

I remember the days of Sprite based games and dodgy plots, flick screen adventures and games such as Bard’s Tale and Eye of the Beholder, yes I’m that old. I remember with fondness such titles as Pool of Radiance from SSI and the many spawned games of that ilk. Now we’re in an age of high-resolution graphics and EAX sound, polygons have replaced the old two-dimensional characters and we want more and more from a game than just good gameplay and fun.

Dungeon Siege is a technological triumph and one of the most enjoyable games we have played in a long time, and if you like your RPGs to place more emphasis on action and combat than stats, there is currently no better choice on the market.
ActionTrip (Apr 01, 2002)
When it all comes down to it, this is the game Diablo II should have been. Hundreds of thousands of people line up on Battle.Net daily to do battle with Diablo and his minions, with the game still ranking high in sales every quarter. Lemme tell ya folks, Dungeon Siege puts it to shame. It is a better game than D2 in almost every aspect (save the audio - D2's audio isn't anything to write home about either), and is well worth every penny spent. If you even remotely liked Diablo II in any way, shape, or form, you will love Dungeon Siege.

It took me some time to complete this review, exams, good weather and the addiction of CastleQuest2 but it’s finally done.

IGN (Apr 04, 2002)
About two years ago this coming summer, I started my very short trip down the "much-hated" road by reviewing a small game that very few people cared about called Diablo II. Oh the humanity... hate mail! Hate mail! Yikes. I gave the game a good review too. It just wasn't perfect. But why am I speaking of this in the Dungeon Siege review? Well, because it's a lot like Diablo, that's why. Once again, there are a lot of things that are good in the game, some things that are very good in the game, but at the same time, there are some things that I just can't seem to get totally past. But before anyone goes and starts on with any amount of hate mail after some of the things I say in the review, hear this... I liked this game! It's a good game! I recommend this game! All right, now we can get on with it.

GameStar (Germany) (May, 2002)

Dungeon Siege is a great experience, one that should not be missed by most gamers. I truly enjoyed what this game offered and most importantly I felt that I got a lot of action for my dollars (single player + multiplayer + the recently released Yesterhaven map = endless hours of gaming). Sadly, the mod community did not pick up as well as GPG and the fans hoped it would. Needless to say, there is enough stuff here to make even the most demanding gamers feel satisfied with their purchase.
GameSpot (Apr 10, 2002)
While its party-based gameplay is a little more tactical and less frantic than that of other action RPG titles like Nox and the Diablo games, Dungeon Siege still plays very similarly to those games. It's a fast-paced hack-and-slash game, so if you're looking for a deeper role-playing game or one in which the primary goal isn't to liberate excessive quantities of loot from its owners, then Dungeon Siege isn't really for you. But its polished interface, accessible gameplay, and exceptional graphics make Dungeon Siege a first-rate action RPG.

Pelit (May, 2002)
Huikeasta suosiostaan huolimatta Diablot eivät ole juuri imitoijia houkutelleet. Nox, Darkstone ja Throne of Darkness, ihan hyviä pelejä jokainen, vaipuivat nopeasti unholaan ilmestymisensä jälkeen. Onko sujuvan toimintaroolipelin suunnittelu liian kiperä tehtävä muille kuin Blizzardin peliguruille?
Netjak (Apr 02, 2002)
I admit that the name sounds cheesy, but rest assured, this is easily the best game of the year and you owe it to yourself to invest the $50 in it. I hope you all have a chance to check out the game, and please get back to me once you have it. I'd love to hear your input. I'm excited about the game, and excited to get other hooked on this as well. I've set aside my Ghost Recon, threw away my copy of Diablo; and Dungeon Siege is soldered to my CDROM. Go get it.
Games Finder (Apr 10, 2014)
Dungeon Siege set some very solid foundations for the series and offers a great adventure from farmer to hero that strikes an enjoyable balance between party management and action role playing. If you’ve played the other games in the series and are looking to return to the roots of the Dungeon Siege franchise or a newcomer to the series you’ll enjoy what the game has to offer.
Yes, you are solely one mouse-clicking finger away from having an invigorating, addicting, real-time fighting RPG experience, and you don't even have to dress up for it. You are first deposited into the gorgeously three-dimensional Kingdom of Ehb as a lone, lowly farmer. Dungeon Siege's single-player game actually houses many sumptuous geological locations, including lilting forests, spooky crypts, medieval towns, dusty mines, swampy bogs, opalescent ice caves, boiling lava pits and imposing fortresses. All you'll have to worry about straightaway is your home on the farm, though, after you choose your gender, facial features, hair and skin tones, and garb in the Start New Game menu. You can also shut the gore off and set the game play to Easy (but tell everyone you played it on Normal or Hard). You can adjust graphics and difficulty settings as you're playing along, too.

Clubic (May 22, 2002)
Entertainmentopia (May 31, 2002)
So is there a way to reinvent the hack and slash that Diablo made famous by making us purchase a new mouse ever couple of months after long sessions on Battle.Net? Maybe reinvent is too strong of a word in this circumstance, but what ever Dungeon Siege does to the genre it does it well, and should be enjoyed by all. If you can stand a purely linear game that offers you the chance to collect hundreds of items and control a mule then DS is right up your gaming alley, if not you are missing out on one of the few games that can offer you so much fun in such a little box.
75 (Aug 20, 2002)
Game Chronicles (Jun 04, 2002)
When it comes down to recommending this game I have to put gameplay over graphics, and in the case of Dungeon Siege there just isn’t that much gameplay. Your main interaction with this game seems to rely heavily on inventory management. Moving around the levels and fighting monsters has been reduced to just a few keystrokes followed by several minutes of automated animation. Quests are scripted and your freedom to explore the levels is restricted to the confines of the story. Dungeon Siege is fun at first, but quickly gets repetitive and even boring. If you can overlook the mindless hacking and slashing and succumb to the power of the perfect audio/visual presentation you will most likely enjoy this game. Otherwise, you might want to hang back and wait for something with a bit more substance.
Level 7 (Apr 14, 2002)
Quandary (May, 2002)
Dungeon Siege is a beautiful-looking, fast-paced action game with RPG trimmings. It does not have complicated character development or an elaborate story but I have had a load of fun with it.
Dungeon Siege is such a pure, concentrated hack and slash title that it overlooks most other features that make great games. It’s positively gorgeous, but playing through the majority of the title feels more like a chore than it does like fun. Omissions like the lack of town teleports, a poor online multiplayer interface, and the extraordinarily monotonous gameplay all conspire to erase nearly all the potential Dungeon Siege had to be a stellar, innovative title. It makes no apologies for being the way that it is, and while its simplistic style of play may appeal to a small group of hardcore Diablo fans, most players will find themselves searching for a good reason to keep playing after about 20 hours. As it stands, Dungeon Siege is a mediocre romp through varied environments that brings very little new to the table.
60 (UK) (Apr 23, 2002)
Dungeon Siege can be fairly entertaining in short bursts, but given the total lack of plot and character development there's little to keep you playing in the long run except the promise of more pretty graphics, new trinkets and more powerful enemies to kill. That might be enough for some people, but given the repetitive and brutal nature of combat it wore thin for me after a while.
