Gameplay (Benelux) (Aug 31, 2012)

Dawnguard is a good first DLC for Skyrim, but it's hard to say if it's worth the $20. There's some large places to explore, but some lack content and there's no really good loot it seems. The story's fun though and I do like the new follower in Serana. Fans of the game will enjoy the extra quests. Turning into a vampire is OK, but I didn't feel I missed much by not utilizing the power but for a few times.

For all its pros and cons, I’m still not able to say with absolute certainty that Dawnguard is a “must-have” title for Skyrim fans. Re-loading my old save games in order to look at the new content only served to reinforce just how much there was still to look at, just from the base game. Then again, it’s been months since I last sat down with this absolute classic of a game; if it takes a bit of DLC to rekindle my enthusiasm for this wild and wondrous title, then regardless of the frustrations, it’s still a winner in my books.

Is Dawnguard worth your money? Well, yes and no. Yes because there's some really interesting lore content for Elder Scrolls fans; no because the developers start throwing around priceless artifacts for literally less than the cost of four walls and a roof. Yes because you can become a vampire and gain special abilities as one; no because being a vampire is only really about combat, as you can't do any of the really interesting vampirish things in, say, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. Yes because there's new loot, spells, and abilities; no because most of that new stuff isn't as good as what you likely already have. Yes because it's more Skyrim, no because it's really only that: a bit more Skyrim. For twenty bucks, I was expecting more.

A bunch of fun new abilities and cool places but Dawnguard is far too glitchy to justify its steep price.

Bethesda Softworks.
