Giant Bomb (Nov 10, 2011)
Bethesda's latest, seemingly endless fantasy role-playing experience is unmissable, technical flaws be damned.
Legendra (Jan 28, 2012)
Game Chronicles (Nov 25, 2011)
They've created a world as much as they've created a game, and it's utterly brilliant. If you've got a computer that can run it, and the ability to manipulate a keyboard and mouse in any way, you owe it to yourself to play Skyrim.

Such a game feels less like purchasing an entertainment product and more like buying a house or proposing marriage. It's something you're going to be living with for hundreds of hours, and it's full of little quirks that will alternately delight and infuriate you. More the former than the latter, hopefully. I'm having a hell of a time tearing myself away long enough to write a review. There are still houses to rob, snotty shopkeepers to set on fire, piles of bones yet to be rearranged to spell out rude words, and I suppose I should get around to doing something about all those dragons eventually. Speaking of marriage, haven't had a chance to do that either. I've invested a considerable amount of time into this game and it still feels like I've only scratched the surface. I'm looking forward to continuing my adventures of the frozen north long after this holiday season, and it's without a doubt one of the best games I've played this year, if not one of the best RPGs of the last decade.
Mana Pool (Nov 18, 2011)
This is a monumental, landmark game, and it's hard to think of how to actually improve it. My above points are thoroughly true and I stand by all of them. But as the score reflects, my heart is not in the criticism here, I’m just being perverse and desperate to find reasons to spend less time playing it. I really wish it was worse, because it’s going to be a painful draw on my evenings for months to come. 14 hours of play has merely scratched the surface of something utterly huge and engrossing. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, obviously – the geeky teenage fantasy note will put some off, and the sprawling world is overwhelming to the point that it really saturates you, there is too much to take in at once. Savour this like the finest of wines, if you can, and it will repay you with moment after moment of awe and wonder. I, however, will be drowning in this vintage until bubbles come out of my ears. Goodbye, everyone, I have to save Tamriel from darkness by stealing all its plates.

It’s hard to find any fault in a game that will let you play it entirely the way you want and packs a level of detail well beyond the standard experience.
Softpedia (Nov 17, 2011)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the best open world first person role playing game that Bethesda has ever created and everyone who had fun with Oblivion, Morrowind or the Fallout series should pick it up and play through it at least two times (for story reasons) using two very different builds to get close to everything that the game has to offer.
IGN (Nov 10, 2011)
It's difficult to ever feel completely satisfied with a play session of Skyrim. There's always one more pressing quest, one more unexplored tract of land, one more skill to increase, one more butterfly to catch. It's a mesmerizing game that draws you into an finely crafted fictional space packed with content that consistently surprises. The changes made since Oblivion are many, and result in a more focused and sensible style of play, where the effects of every decision are easily seen. Featuring the same kind of thrilling freedom of choice The Elder Scrolls series is known for along with beautiful visuals and a stirring soundtrack, playing Skyrim is a rare kind of intensely personal, deeply rewarding experience, and one of the best role-playing games yet produced.
PC Gamer (Nov 10, 2011)
The games we normally call open worlds – the locked off cities and level-restricted grinding grounds – don’t compare to this. While everyone else is faffing around with how to control and restrict the player, Bethesda just put a fucking country in a box. It’s the best open world game I’ve ever played, the most liberating RPG I’ve ever played, and one of my favourite places in this or any other world. In case I’m not getting it across, this is a thumbs-up.

RPG Site (Nov 10, 2011)
It almost wouldn't be a Bethesda game without sometimes-underwhelming performance, strange bugs, insane NPCs and all those other open world flaws and gameplay contrivances, but it speaks to the quality of the rest of the game that once you get more than an hour into Skyrim that all just won't matter. I was mad when I got stuck in the floor of a dungeon once and had to reload a save ten minutes prior - but I was also so excited to continue playing that the anger didn't last. With Skyrim Bethesda have truly succeeded in crafting not a sandbox, but a world. It's a world that's more exciting to live and play in than any other they've created. It's a game where the world is the greatest character of all, reigning supreme over all others. Skyrim's world is beautiful. That, combined with exciting gameplay, open-ended character development and engaging story threads is all it takes to be truly great - but it all starts with the world. From that, through that, the game itself is beautiful too.

GamingLives (Jan 11, 2012)
So, to answer the original questions... yes, it most certainly lived up to its hype and, in my opinion, Skyrim is the new benchmark against which all RPGs will be measured. It's a fantastic game, with an incredible amount to do and a beauty the likes of which has yet to be seen on current consoles, but there is a distinct lack of magic in Skyrim and so, with a reported 190 hours of gameplay remaining, the interest has already waned. What's important, however, is that it took the equivalent of twenty playthroughs of most modern single player campaigns for that to happen. The fact that this pains me as I genuinely want to continue playing is a testament to how good it actually is.
Cheat Happens (Nov 13, 2011)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim continues a long standing tradition of excellence for Bethesda's role playing series. Though it retains the depth and strategic elements of the previous games, it's also the series most accessible title, making it a great jumping on point for fans new to the series. With all of its exploration and content, you're going to be playing Skyrim for a long time, but that's okay, you didn't like sunlight anyways did you?

Skyrim is a beautiful game. Skyrim is a well-developed piece of software. Skyrim is a forward-only time machine (in that it will suck hours and hours of your life away) and an excuse to buy a next-gen console if your PC can’t run it. Skyrim is so addictive and so distracting that it’s difficult to say anything bad about it. It would be a disservice to anyone who considers themselves a true gamer to miss this one.

GameSpot (Nov 10, 2011)
If you've played previous Elder Scrolls games, glitches and oddities don't come as a surprise. Nevertheless, Skyrim comes in a year graced with multiple quality RPGs that feature tighter combat, fewer bugs, better animations, and so forth. But to be fair, none of those games are endowed with such enormity. Yet The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim doesn't rely on sheer scope to earn its stripes. It isn't just that there's a lot to do: it's that most of it is so good. Whether you're slashing a dragon's wings, raising the dead back to life, or experimenting at the alchemy table, Skyrim performs the most spectacular of enchantments: the one that causes huge chunks of time to vanish before you know it.
89 (Jan 03, 2012)
Ultimately, Skyrim is a spectacular game. Huge, full of rewards and things to see, read and do. Still, the “console friendly” approach did leave its mark and the technical problems, coupled with some excessive simplification don’t bode well for Bethesda’s reputation. Yet even though I wasn’t that enthralled in this universe like in the other titles of the series, I can’t deny its achievements. Maybe because I want to find the last part of that magical amulet.
RPGFan (Nov 10, 2011)
The best Elder Scrolls yet, although not the revolutionary open-world RPG some might have expected.
85 (Jan 08, 2012)
As I mentioned earlier this game did not break any new ground for me. Some of the games elements can be dated back to Catacombs 3d. But this game isn’t about what new elements have been brought in, its about how they added the elements to make a game worth playing. Skyrim will give hours of fun to anyone who gives it a chance, even people who don’t want to have anything to do with the actual storyline can still run off and have their own fun in the numerous towns and cities that dot the landscape.
Original Gamer (Dec 06, 2011)
For newcomers, you will be so overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things to do in this huge world that it won't really bother you. As a longtime fan, I can honestly say there were some much needed improvements, but that this is still a very familiar, fun, and still rather unique experience. Because The Elder Scrolls games are so damn good, I couldn't ask for much more. But for the next release, it would be nice to see more time being spent fixing some of the problem areas that exist. Overall, this one of the best games of the year, and one that is completely deserving of your money and time. It is a lot of fun, no matter how you choose to play and regardless of its many problems. It certainly is the best Elder Scrolls title to date, it just didn't feel like a massive step up from its predecessor. Instead, it opted to take a more lateral approach, and in my opinion the experience suffered slightly this time around because of it.
Game Critics (Dec 07, 2011)
When taken in total, it must be admitted that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim does not deviate much from the established Elder Scrolls formula. However, the painstakingly-designed world in combination with the retooled leveling system represents the most polished version of that formula to date. There's something to be said for sticking with what one knows and refining it, and in Skyrim's case, there's a lot to be said for it.
85 (Nov 16, 2011)
