Elven Legacy: Magic is a suitable finale for the Elven Legacy series. It offers great value for money, as you will get a lot of gameplay out of this, and wraps up the story nicely. If you have played the previous two expansions, then you would be a fool not to get this one.
Elven Legacy is one of those titles that is made for the hardest of the hardcore strategy fan: the depth and the replayability of the game is striking, and you'll find that upgrading your soldiers, trying to unlock bonus levels and exploiting every map can keep you busy for a very long time. However, the time restraints for each mission, the overwhelming numbers that you'll face, and the technical issues will wear most people down, if it doesn't keep them away entirely.
As this is the finale of the expansion trilogy you probably wouldn’t be interested in buying the game unless you had played the subsequent ones before it. In which case I would say that this offers nothing short of another great investment for more hours of great strategic game play, it’s only a matter of time before we see what evolves in the minds of the developers for their next game release.
The expansion pack sells for $10 on GamersGate and is a good value given the amount of extended play time you’ll get. It’s still a very challenging strategy game and I entered a lot of cheat codes to give myself more gold and health. This expansion could have been so much better with voice acting and more beta testing. The missions are fun but the lack of multiplayer servers is a downer too. The single player campaign is great and I enjoyed playing as the dwarves, orcs, Brennock’s army, and even the demonic army of Farrakh. With the unique campaigns I feel that this is my favorite expansion and a good way to end the series.
Essentially, Elven Legacy: Magic is no different from, nor any better or worse than, its earlier cohorts. It may provide new missions and skills, but it’s still the same game at its core. It’s an extremely unforgiving and harsh strategy game that equal numbers will adore and hate. It won’t convert naysayers nor will it annoy fans; it’s straight-down-the-middle adequate while clearly designed with a certain niche market in mind. However, after many hours spent with the Elven Legacy games, I’m not entirely convinced I can ever face another hex-based strategy game again. At least, not until my intensive therapy course is over with.
