The Nerd Stash (Nov 10, 2020)
Ghostrunner lives up to my expectations and exceeds in some areas, offering a cyberpunk experience I won’t soon forget. In exchange for its relatively short length, it offers constantly challenging action with a good story that makes use of its predictable nature. That, combined with some solid world-building and sound design, makes the experience feel like a cyberpunk DOOM. The minor issues I have with the game are greatly overshadowed by what it does right, making this easily one of the best games I’ve played this year. If Ghostrunner seems like your style of game, I have no doubts you’ll walk away pleasantly surprised and exhilarated.
Way Too Many Games (Nov 04, 2020)
Ghostrunner is one of the most fun games I’ve played this year. The fast and difficult one-hit-kill gameplay is constantly thrilling, whilst a surprisingly decent story and progression system help keep things interesting. Not to mention the killer soundtrack and fantastic visuals. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got my times to beat. I won’t stop playing this one for a while.
Rapid Reviews UK (Nov 06, 2020)
So is Ghostrunner a title you should run toward or is it one best hidden from? I can wholeheartedly recommend Ghostrunner. With sleek parkour, responsive controls, impressive graphics and all-round excellent gameplay; Ghostrunner is one of the best games I’ve played, and certainly a game of the year contender.
Hooked Gamers (Oct 26, 2020)
This month marks my 10-year anniversary writing for Hooked Gamers, and, in that time, I’ve only given one game a 10. With its beautiful visual design, quality voice acting, tight controls, interesting mechanics, and engaging world-building, I have absolutely no hesitation adding Ghostrunner to my exclusive club of top marks. It’s rare to find a game that succeeds so well in everything it does, and the result is a game that absolutely everyone should check out.
Explosion Network (Oct 27, 2020)
Releasing just a couple of weeks ahead of Cyberpunk 2077 you may be quick to overlook Ghostrunner, but you’d be doing yourself a horrible disservice. Not only is Ghostrunner one of this year’s best games, but it’s also some of the most satisfying gameplay I’ve experienced in years. For a team of just 32 people, developer One More Level has crafted a triple-A calibre production with genre-defining gameplay to be proud of and I can’t wait to see what they do next.
Handsome Phantom (Oct 26, 2020)
It’s almost impossible to succinctly talk about all the features that Ghostrunner throws at you throughout your gameplay – and the pacing at which it does so is incredibly balanced. We’ve yet to talk about movement on overhead rails, riding on drones and using them to destroy other enemies, the complex puzzle-like system that shield beacons have in order to protect enemies, or describe the nearly one dozen different types of enemies (not including bosses) that Ghostrunner has to offer. But hey, maybe it’s okay to have a few surprises while you’re playing a new game every now and then.
Ghostrunner has a standout soundtrack, top notch voice acting, and worlds that are not only structured well, but beautifully designed. In a time where nearly every game demands your full attention, Ghostrunner actually deserves it.
WellPlayed (Oct 27, 2020)
Ghostrunner is the most fun I’ve had being utterly terrible at something. It’s incredibly hard to feel bad about eating shit every ten seconds when you’re so entranced by the thumping score and gorgeous aesthetic, no less because the game is rarely cheap – the tools are there, sometimes you just have to dust yourself off and give it that hundredth go before you nail it. While I do wish the narrative had been a tad less predictable and ended more climatically, it’s delivered with so much confidence that it’s hard not to be on board. That soundtrack though, damn.
DashGamer.com (Oct 27, 2020)
Ghostrunner is essential gaming in 2020. The combination of inspiring franchises that paved the way for potential series, just like this. There’s no doubt that One More Level have a hit on their hands, and the potential of their own franchise series, that may very well be a raging success. Ghostrunner will carry us through to our next generation, with the implication that even the simplest gameplay loop can deliver an action packed experience. A combination of solid parkour traversing, incredible detail and design with seamless and stylish offense that is fused with an incredibly futuristic overture makes for one of the best gaming experiences, this year.
VGChartz (Oct 27, 2020)
Ultimately, Ghostrunner is an exceptionally well designed game which really pushes how far quick, complex movement can be done in a first person game. One More Level has built something special and created a satisfying gameplay experience that few other titles reach. Despite the occasional iffy difficulty spike, Ghostrunner is an essential experience for anyone who follows fast-paced action games with deep gameplay systems.
Checkpoint (Oct 27, 2020)
For the first-person parkour game fanatics out there, you now have an alternative to Mirror’s Edge to fully sink your teeth into. Ghostrunner firmly establishes and engrains the idea of repetition and experimentation. It is as much a strategy game as it is a parkour game, by way of introducing obstacle after obstacle that forces you to adopt new strategies and constantly keeping you on your toes. Standing idle will spell your untimely death. Combine this gameplay with heart thumping, genre appropriate music and you are more than likely to enter a flow state where both you and the Ghostrunner are one. While the overall experience was short-lived and left me wanting more, the developers ended up setting the perfect pace and delivered a truly great video game experience that is easy to learn and satisfying to master.
TechRaptor (Oct 26, 2020)
Ghostrunner is an action-packed cyberpunk adventure full of speedy action. Graphically speaking, Ghostrunner really feels like a next-generation experience. The level design and combat feel satisfying and well-done, although bosses could have been better.
The Outerhaven (Oct 30, 2020)
Overall, Ghostrunner is a hard as hell experience that will drive you to your limits as you play it. Simultaneously, the story’s intrigue and the tight gameplay will push you through the difficulty of delivering a satisfying experience. Yes, the game is short, clocking in at around 3-4 hours depending on your skill, but Ghostrunner is designed to be played repeatedly until you master it and speed run it in less than an hour. If you manage to finish Ghostrunner in less than an hour, let me know, and I’ll shower you with reverence.
God is a Geek (Oct 27, 2020)
Ghostrunner is built for that subset of gamers who enjoy the steepest challenge. The story is solid, the world is beautiful, and the precision insane - but this is a hardcore experience from start to finish.
Area Jugones (Oct 26, 2020)
Shacknews (Oct 26, 2020)
Ghostrunner will set your adrenaline racing and won’t let up until you’ve mastered its systems. And when you do reach that zen-like moment of precision and elegance, dancing on the edge of a blade between life and death, you’ll ask yourself, “Can I do better?” And that’s when Ghostrunner will have you, truly and deeply.
GameSpew (Oct 26, 2020)
But as long as you know what you’re getting yourself into with Ghostrunner, it might just prove to be your favourite game of the year. It’s certainly the most action-packed and exciting. It absorbs you in a world that’s dripping with atmosphere thanks to its stellar visuals, and its pumping soundtrack makes you uncontrollably tap your feet. The gameplay, though, is what will ultimately make you love it. It might take a few attempts, but when you finally clear a room of enemies in one continuous motion as if it was choreographed for a blockbuster movie, you can’t help but feel a great sense of accomplishment and awe. And Ghostrunner has so many of these moments that you can’t help but love it.
Gameblog.fr (Oct 26, 2020)
Game Revolution (Oct 26, 2020)
And even though that world is a broken dystopian nightmare, Ghostrunner‘s gameplay is just the opposite. Slicing and sprinting through each dilapidated factory and string of sharply lit billboards is a rush because of how satisfying it is to control as well as how it, through its design, pushes players to play well enough to get the most out of its systems. A seasoned ninja strikes perfectly without any fatal faults; an apt summary of the gameplay loop and Ghostrunner as a whole.
TheSixthAxis (Oct 26, 2020)
Ghostrunner answers the age old question of “What if the combat was actually good in Mirror’s Edge?” It perfectly pairs parkour style free-running with frantic, but precise combat to create movie-like action sequences. This is all backed up by a fun narrative that drives the gameplay forward at a blistering pace. Ghostrunner is honestly a must-have for PC players and the most fun I’ve had reviewing a game this year.
The Digital Fix (Oct 30, 2020)
Ghostrunner is a high-octane adrenaline rush of a game with exciting gameplay, a great soundtrack and creative level design, however performance issues and inconsistent platforming keep it from being perfect.
GameSpace (Nov 02, 2020)
Despite its flaws, however, Ghostrunner is a fantastic platformer. While we would have loved more lore and a more consistent set of boss experiences, these are small pickings for a game that delivers a Cyberpunk dystopia that we loved tearing down.
Game Rant (Nov 05, 2020)
Ghostrunner feels like an extended challenge that manages to never get repetitive or frustrating. Whether it's traversing a narrow hallway full of laser traps or slicing through a bipedal robot sentry, this title will have players feeling satisfied as if they had accomplished these feats in real life.
PC Games (Germany) (Nov 08, 2020)
ThisGenGaming (Nov 01, 2020)
Ghostrunner is not for the casual gamer. The presentation is top of the charts and it’ll sell countless copies on style alone, but I fear a lot of people will quickly drop off because of its difficulty. It does cater excellently to speedrunners and people with a tendency for hardcore precision execution, so I’m more than expecting it to become a cult-classic.
Destructoid (Oct 31, 2020)
As I played through the roughly eight-hour campaign this week I couldn't shake the feeling that I was playing the unholy union of Hotline Miami and Mirror's Edge that I didn't know I was missing in my life. Through all of the frustration and cursing at myself for screwing up something that I knew I should have gotten right, I was still having a blast and loving every minute of the game. Though the story is complete for me, I'll most assuredly be returning to this to see how well I can hone my cyberpunk ninja skills.
Press Start Australia (Oct 27, 2020)
Ghostrunner might be standing on the shoulders of games like Mirror’s Edge, and even Dishonored, in terms of inspiration with its parkour and slick swordplay. But it also separates heads from those shoulders and stands proud as the far better application of both disciplines—Ghostrunner is a sleek, fun exercise for deft hands.
Game Debate (Oct 26, 2020)
All in all, Ghostrunner mixes all the best parkour elements from Mirror’s Edge and introduces it to the chaotically symphonic combat of orchestral violence that is Hotline Miami. Run, die, run, and die again; it’s brutal in all the best ways and will have you aching for a perfect run. Whilst it does have some issues and can feel a little short, your time in Ghostrunner will be wholly enjoyable, and filled with so many ecstatic moments of blissful victory.
3D Juegos (Oct 27, 2020)
Easy Allies (Oct 28, 2020)
Ghostrunner is a challenging, yet fair adrenaline-fueled escapade of violence and speed. Running through the streets, jumping off walls, and cutting through enemies is a lot of fun, and there’s a rush of satisfaction when you finally overcome a challenge. Some parts like its story could be better, but what it offers in terms of gameplay is nothing short of greatness. It may take a bit to settle in, but when everything clicks, you'll feel like a badass in no time.
JeuxActu (Oct 30, 2020)
GamingTrend (Nov 07, 2020)
Ghostrunner is a breath of fresh air. It takes the best parts of Hotline Miami and Mirror’s Edge, sprinkles in its own style, and hands players a unique experience. Every single minute is a thrill ride that keeps the player packed full of adrenaline, and it doesn’t stop until the end of each level. It’s an immensely enjoyable and satisfying experience that will have you on the edge of your seat trying to master each segment. However, as the price point currently stands you’re getting about 5 hours of content for $30, with the only replayability coming from leaderboard rankings.
Win-win.
Any Button Gaming (Oct 27, 2020)
Overall Ghostrunner is an intentionally focused and concise product that knows exactly both what it is, and what it aims to provide players. Ghostrunner understands its target audience and caters to them exclusively unapologetically. You’ll probably only finish it once, but considering the asking price that’s more than fair for what you get. A well crafted, finely refine reflex FPS for those, who like their games, are tough as nails. Ghostrunner earns a solid 8.2/10 for its bold and inventive take on cyberpunk.
Meristation (Oct 30, 2020)
Everyeye.it (Oct 26, 2020)
I enjoyed Ghostrunner and what it's bringing to the table. The fast-paced movement mechanics, tasking timing requirements, and combat systems, combined with the varied enemies make for a challenging yet fulfilling gameplay experience. My main concern revolves around the longevity of the game as there is next to nothing to do after you complete the title's admittedly short campaign. Ghostrunner runs incredibly smoothly, looks great, and feels fantastic to play, but I find myself asking the question, why go back? With this being said, anybody who is a fan of cybernetic ninjas in a dystopian reality will slot right into Ghostrunner's brutal world, just know, it's a vicious place to call home.
Kakuchopurei.com (Oct 26, 2020)
It’s what a true Sonic The Hedgehog game should be like. Except this one’s R-rated and has you slicing people with katanas instead of robots with your spiked back. A hearty recommendation for those looking for the Dark Souls of linear first-person action games.
GBAtemp.net (Oct 26, 2020)
So really, Ghostrunner is comprised of elaborate mazes that require patience and quick-wittedness. Consider your first run through an area as reconnaissance, second time as practice and third (and subsequent) times as fun, even if it does get frustrating at times. It’s not as expansive as the other upcoming cyberpunk game (though Ghostrunner does include some not-so-subtle references) and is a title that stands on its own. Considering how its relatively small indie team of 32 came up with an original, captivating gameplay and, honestly, a fun take on the cyberpunk genre, it’s worth giving it a shot.
GameSkinny (Nov 02, 2020)
Ghostrunner offers satisfying combat in a well-constructed, beautiful cyberpunk world. You will feel more and more powerful as the game moves on, and moving through the world is always a wonderful experience.
There are a few holes in the story and mechanics that could have seen additional tuning, but if you’re in the market for a fast-paced slash-em-up set in a bleak future, Ghostrunner has just what you need.
Eurogamer.it (Oct 26, 2020)
WCCFtech (Oct 26, 2020)
Ghostrunner is a very well-crafted first-person action game featuring a lightning-fast pace, a very smooth parkour system, and tight platforming in addition to weighty, satisfying combat. The high challenge level and the one-hit-kill system, however, can lead to some serious frustration, as it requires a level of effort that not all players may be willing to put in the game. As such, Ghostrunner is a game that only the most hardcore of action games players will fully appreciate.
IGN (Oct 26, 2020)
With its breakneck pace and skill-heavy gameplay, Ghostrunner is a speedrunner’s dream. But even beyond that demographic, this is a great first person action game that feels punishing but fair. You may die hundreds of times, but instantaneous respawns and generous checkpointing ensure that Ghostrunner’s challenging combat and platforming never become a chore. More than all of that though, Ghostrunner is jam packed with a great variety of enemies, mechanics, and special powers that constantly changed up how I approached its many unique encounters. That meant it always felt fresh, and by the end of its six to eight hour campaign, I was all too eager to jump back in for seconds.
PCGamesN (Nov 02, 2020)
Ghostrunner never lets you settle. Its main story is a breathless, adrenaline-fuelled race to the top of the tower. There are collectibles to hunt down and endless appeal for speedrunners who want to master every level like a racing circuit, but Ghostrunner left me spent and totally satisfied – six hours of slicing through nondescript cyberpunk goons to nosebleed techno will do that to you. Ghostrunner’s smart level design and rich array of enemies are a joy to blitz through, but it’s all underpinned by some of the slickest parkour mechanics of any game. Ever.
Hobby Consolas (Oct 26, 2020)
TheGamer (Oct 27, 2020)
There are certainly areas where All In Games could improve for a sequel, but Ghostrunner is a blast. It's one of the best games of the year and something I'd easily recommend to fans of Mirror's Edge or first-person games in general.
GamingBolt (Oct 27, 2020)
Ghostrunner isn’t a long game, but it doesn’t need to be. I’d imagine most players will finish it in around 6-8 hours, depending on their skill level, but this is a game that’s dying to be replayed. Despite its obvious influences, Ghostrunner feels unique. It can be frustrating at times, but Ghostrunner is game with an enormous amount of depth, and one that speedrunners will be testing themselves against for years. But whether you play it once or a thousand times, Ghostrunner has enough variety, confidence, and style to make any action fan happy. I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into the first time I set foot in Dharma Tower, but I do know one thing: I’ll definitely be coming back for more.
BaziCenter.com (Nov 03, 2020)
DarkZero (Nov 09, 2020)
Ghostrunner has focused itself on bringing a precisely sculpted, fast, action puzzler that wonderfully blends all its design and action with the beautiful visuals and a banging soundtrack. It is challenging, and yes, death will be a plenty, but the developers have done good job in making sure the live, die, repeat nature of the game is as frustratingly free as possible, leaving its well designed mechanics to shine. Ghostrunner is an absolute blast to play, and when everything flows, it flows in such a electrifying manner that there is a euphoric delight in overcoming its challenge. Ghostrunner is not the longest game, but the experience it leaves the player at the end of it is one of great satisfaction.
Impulse Gamer (Oct 28, 2020)
I’d love to be better at the game, but that seems unlikely to happen. With that being said, I would still heartily recommend it… provided you keep in mind the frequent dying and need for precision timing etc… if that sort of challenge is up your alley then I think you will find a lot of fun here!
IGN Italia (Oct 26, 2020)
A qualunque costo.
Ghostrunner is a very well-made game with excellent graphics and tight controls, but it's often frustrating, with a very uneven difficulty curve and some horribly tedious sections. Plus, once you're done with the campaign, all that's left is to do it again.
Spazio Games (Oct 26, 2020)
Twisted Voxel (Oct 27, 2020)
Ghostrunner wears trial-and-error on its sleeve but does so with style and grace. It’s not for everyone, as it can be almost equally as frustrating as it is fun. While the mechanics are fluid and fun, the nature of progression hampers the experience. That said, there’s undoubtedly plenty of appeal for the hardcore speedrun community.
MonsterVine (Nov 02, 2020)
Anyway, the game is good. I think I died 1,000 times playing it, but it’s good. It’s probably the most frustrated I’ve been with a game in years, but I couldn’t help going back. It’s just one of those games that demands a lot of you, and if you’re willing to put the work in it’s incredibly rewarding. But if you’re not into harder games or technically demanding games maybe pass on this one.
GameSpot (Oct 26, 2020)
When Ghostrunner rips, it really rips. Wall-running, jumping, sliding, and cutting through enemies as you go is empowering and impressive. For a good portion of the game, you'll only experience how impressive it feels to dart around a room in short bursts, but even that's enough motivation to keep you pushing forward to master the art of robot ninja parkour. There's bound to be a lot of frustration along the way, so it isn't all smiles, exactly, but the rush you feel in the moment as you perfectly run a room is worth the grit.
The Indie Game Website (Oct 26, 2020)
The game is not forgiving, but if you are in the market for an environmental puzzler and enjoy splashing limbs every which way, then it may just be for you. It really makes you feel like Spider-Man if spiderman was a cybernetic murderninja set on saving the last vestiges of humanity from the ravage of poor architectural design.
Windows Central (Oct 26, 2020)
Ghostrunner is a thrilling ride for most of its 8-hour runtime, thanks to its fantastic soundtrack, sci-fi visuals, and fast-paced gameplay. The game starts to stumble, however, when the platforming stops and the combat begins.
Let’s be clear here: a tightly-crafted, bug free game that does exactly what it wants to do, Ghostrunner deserves an audience. The appeal might not be universal, but the art and style behind the game cannot be ignored. It really is good, despite a personal distaste for how it handles certain elements. If a killcam is implemented to help the player learn their mistakes, then this title becomes an easy recommendation. Until then, check out the demo; it’s a good representation of what the game is. Anyone who enjoys that will have a blast with Ghostrunner. In the meantime, I’ll be applying salve to my now-wounded ego.
PCMag.com (Nov 29, 2020)
I have a low tolerance for extreme difficulty in games, but I can put up with it when it’s truly an integral part of the experience. Hardcore gamers and even the developers at One More Level and Slipgate Ironworks may argue otherwise, but I strongly believe Ghostrunner would be a better title if it were easier. It looks amazing, and I applaud its ambition for pushing its otherwise marvelous and agile first-person combat controls as far as they can go. That said, it's a problem when both the game and the player can’t keep up.
Without my suffering-tinted lenses, Ghostrunner is a fast-paced, tough-ass platformer. Every stage is a non-stop barrage of fresh new challenges. Death is around every corner if you ever stop moving. You’ll experience crushing defeat in a host of different ways, but your victories will be all the sweeter. You can choose your path to victory, with multiple routes available through some of the larger stages. On the aesthetic side of things, more or less every stage is drenched in cyberpunk minutiae. The neon, the grime, and the violence lend an electric urgency to your already death-defying exploits. My only warning is this: know what you’re in for first. First-person action platform games aren’t for everyone. Of course, I had to play one to discover this, so who knows! Maybe a new favorite subgenre is waiting in the wings.
Darkstation (Nov 03, 2020)
With an excellent, synth-heavy score, generally impressive level design and few technical hiccups, Ghostrunner was a game I was poised to enjoy. With the exception of Mirror’s Edge, first-person platforming and parkour hasn’t been explored very often, and the cyberpunk setting and Blade Runner vibe appealed as well. There are many gamers, I’m certain, who will not only enjoy Ghostrunner’s challenges but be perfectly happy with its demanding and repetitive mechanics. I enjoy challenge, too, but I also want to learn from my mistakes and maybe even succeed the first time around. Ghostrunner is a well-made game with a very specific intention, and there are players for whom this title will be Nirvana. Just not me.
ScreenRant (Nov 08, 2020)
Ghostrunner overwhelmingly succeeds at making the player feel like an agile and deadly cyber-ninja. Just as often, though, it feels like the worst parts of an older Sonic game: players want to rip through at the highest possible speed, but the level design slows them down or trips them up too often to keep that momentum. In spite of that, the undeniable satisfaction of a perfectly executed battle is more than enough to make this game worth the effort it demands.
Sirus Gaming (Oct 26, 2020)
All-in-all, I had so much fun with Ghostrunner. It’s a great game for those who love being challenged by video games. If you want to have a relaxing time and game casually, however, this isn’t for you. This is one of those games where you’ll have to put in the effort to succeed. It’s a thrilling, daunting experience, which provides satisfaction once you’re done with it. It’s not a perfect game. It has a lot of flaws, but it’s also good enough for what it’s trying to be.
Under its futuristic sheen, Ghostrunner is an uncompromisingly hardcore action game that often overwhelms with frustrating enemies and slippery controls, tilting the difficulty over into unfair territory until you scrape by after the umpteenth time through luck rather than skill or memory.
The masochistically inclined may relish this as an opportunity for bragging rights and no-death runs, but when more games are able to balance challenge with accessibility, this cyberpunk slasher is for better and worse more old-school than next-gen.
Edge (Nov 04, 2020)
We'll pre-empt the inevitable. Between the likes of Spelunky 2, Noita and Disc Room, we've had a wonderful time lately with games that have killed us often. But learning from failure and applying knowledge and skill to progress only gets you so far here. In Ghostrunner you're far more reliant on patience, perseverance, and the good fortune not to have a stray bullet from an unseen enemy hit you the instant your feet touch the ground from a jump. Put simply, it regularly betrays the cyber-ninja fantasy it's peddling. The speedruns will doubtless be dazzling, and Ghostrunner certainly looks every bit the blockbuster it isn't. How unfortunate, then, that a game about a deadly assassin should suffer from so many critical failures in execution.
Expansive DLC (Oct 26, 2020)
Ghostrunner is both hard and easy to love. It has a wonderful sense of style and there’s an interesting world that’s been built up here, but it definitely puts you through the wringer to get some free-flowing action and to appreciate everything that’s been cultivated.
While it won’t be for everyone, there’s a fairly solid game to find under the blemishes and when you connect with it, you’re guaranteed one hell of a ride.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun (Oct 26, 2020)
As a simple one-and-done campaign run Ghostrunner isn’t at its best: the handiest tricks coming too late in the day and the towering death spikes overshadowing the good times around them. I couldn’t, for example, tell you anything of the story, as it’s delivered over comms during moments of intense concentration. I think it involves someone called Mara, but only because that’s the name on one of the boss fight health bars.
But take that initial pass as a warm up lap, inuring yourself to some frustrations to come, and what follows finally delivers on the fun of the cyber ninja fantasy. Death number 1424 beckons.
Polygon (Oct 26, 2020)
There’s something extra special about hurtling through space from one wall or platform to the next in first person. Compared to a 2D platformer, the motion seems faster, the timing is tighter, and the penalty of missing a jump — that feeling of the ground rushing toward you as you fall — is way more intense. Ghostrunner is a perfect example of what happens when a developer works within the limitations of an underappreciated genre and pulls the absolute best from it.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Oct 27, 2020)
All that's left for me now is to go back and replay the individual levels, collecting the things I missed, and beating my time to completion and amount of deaths along the way. And I'll do it, not because I'm fussy about that kind of thing, but because, simply, Ghostrunner is a joy to play.
