The Great Wall of Words is a single player collection of word games with a Great Wall Of China theme.

There are three separate word games in this title which can be played individually, there is also an adventure mode which combines all three. All three games are similar in style, the game area contains a set of apparently random letters and the player must click on connected tiles to form words of three letters or more. These then disappear and are replaced with new letters. The three game modes are:
  • Classic mode: This is a timed game. In keeping with the 'Great Wall' theme this mode has two vertical status bars, on the left is a slowly burning fuse leading to a bomb planted by the invading Mongol hordes - when the bomb goes off it's game over, on the right the player constructs a wall by scoring points for the words they find. The object being to complete the wall before the bomb goes off.
  • Battle mode: The basic game play is the same as all the other games, however here there is a single status bar at the bottom of the screen. This bar shows the status of the Chinese guards and the Mongol invaders who are locked in battle. The guards are losing but by scoring points can the player help them push the Mongols from the screen.
  • Conquest mode: Once a tile has been used in a word tiles in that position are shown in an orange/red colour, these tiles can still be used to form words though. The objective being to turn all the tiles in the game area to the new colour.
All games have special bonus tiles that, when used in a word, multiply the word score and bombs which clear surrounding tiles and also score points. High scoring words earn bonuses and gold coins which give the player additional time. When playing the individual games the levels become harder as the player progresses, partly due to a reduction in the size of the game area. Once a level is completed another is presented, then another until finally the player is defeated.

The adventure mode neatly combines all three of the above games into the story of Qu-Yuan, the emperor's chief architect, who must travel the length of the Great Wall repairing each section before the Mongols attack. There are twenty-five steps in the adventure mode, each consisting of a single game in one of the above styles. Most sections require a straightforward 'classic' repair while others, where there is a Mongol presence, involve a Battle or Conquest.

There is a high score table which maintains separate entries for each individual game mode as well as adventure mode.
