Hearts of Iron 3 is an excellent game and almost unique in it's genre and level of details and offers a great presentation of many of the more global aspects of World War 2 that are often forgotten about in smaller scale games which should please people who likes to research that perior. However, it is a game that requires much patience to play and, though excellent, some less patient players might be turned off by it's pace or all there is to manage. However, for those who can gather the patience needed to play this game it is a gem waiting only to be discovered and enjoyed.

Game Arena (Aug 20, 2009)
And that is what makes this game so great. HOI3 has a steep learning curve and it will be a struggle at first, but once you've got it all under control you can have some serious fun. You are hit with a huge rush when you do something that changes the course of history completely, it's a rush unparalleled by any other type of game. If you can master Hearts of Iron 3 then you will also have a leg up when you play other Grand Strategy games, such as Paradox's own Europa Universalis or Victoria series. Perhaps you will have even more success than I did getting in the Australian public to support the necessary war with New Zealand.
Hearts of Iron III is, again, a game for hardcore manager-style players, or at least those who enjoy micro (or, in this case macro) management. It isn't the most exciting of games from a "Get your hands dirty on the frontlines" perspective, but for players looking for a long, cerebrally-challenging strategy game, this is it.
Absolute Games ( (Sep 02, 2009)
GameSpot (Aug 12, 2009)
For once, allowing for greater automation has improved a strategy game. Reducing micromanagement increases the interaction you have with your forces in Hearts of Iron III because you really feel like a political leader instead of a drone shuffling troops across a map. This is still tailored for experienced strat heads and wargamers with a lot of patience, but the game is more accessible than either of its predecessors and a great jumping-on point for new players who want to make the leap into a grand strategy epic.
IGN (Aug 13, 2009)
It's a sure bet that Hearts of Iron III is one of if not the most detailed strategy games you've ever played. The depth of information and modeling in this game is as comprehensive as we've ever seen and it holds rich rewards for players who are willing to make the considerable investment into learning how to play. The optional AI control of key programs and the new HQ order system gives players the chance to focus on the aspects of the game that most interest them at any one time without ever making the player feel as if they've lost control over the big picture. We do have a few complaints though. First, the tutorial is very incomplete and the interface itself does little to explain the significance of certain important terms to the player. Second, the pre-war portion of the game is unavoidably monotonous, which is even more frustrating when a crash makes it all moot.

For all gamer that love to dig deep into strategy you’ll be well served by Hearts of Iron III. The realistic nature of the setting and units are particularly strong helping to bring the setting to life.
GameStar (Germany) (Aug 25, 2009)
Despite all that, I really enjoyed Hearts of Iron 3. There are plenty of WWII games floating around on the market right now, but I can’t imagine any war game aficionado being unsatisfied with playing this one. Priced at $39.99, it’s worth picking up a copy. It will definitely keep you busy without overwhelming you with micro-management.
Hearts of Iron III feels like a learning experience to me. If you love outsmarting the Nazis then Hearts of Iron III may be for you. If you like quick action, then you might want to look somewhere else. I am thankful that I was able to play and review Hearts of Iron III on the PC.
Gamer Limit (Aug 07, 2009)
Hearts of Iron 3 is by far the most complicated and in-depth strategy game I’ve ever played. My big issue with it is that I didn’t have much fun with the game after delving through hours of menus: it wasn’t until I actually experienced some combat that the game stopped feeling stale. As a new comer to the series, I expected some kind of reward for spending hours upon hours learning how to play the game: all I got instead was a presidential simulator, which is great, if that is your cup of tea.
Gameplanet (Aug 18, 2009)
All but the hardest kernel of strategy fans may be overwhelmed by the micromanagement required and jaded by the long hours of meticulous planning that precede any action, but Hearts of Iron III isn’t designed with casual players in mind. Fans of the series and the genre will find much to be excited about.
Girl Gamers UK (Aug 13, 2009)
The Hearts of Iron series has an enormous following, and these are the guys that will be most excited about this game. The sheer depth and massive scale that has made the Hearts of Iron series so popular is still there, so fans of the game will have plenty to be happy about. Personally, I think it was a little too involved for me, leaving me scratching my head and wondering what to do next. New players should be aware that, should they wish to get the most out of this game, then an investment of time and patience will be required.
