When people hear the term "MOBA" they usually groan. I tend to respond with, "Tell me more." I grew up with RTS games since I could grasp a mouse and keyboard, and my first MOBA was the original DOTA back in 2005. Over the years I moved on to many other games, dabbling in them, but mostly playing League of Legends semi-competitively by way of ranked games.

The MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) is this decade's shooter, the sort of ubiquitous experience almost everyone has dabbled in before they return to their game of choice -- FIFA, NBA 2K or Madden.

A few years ago Blizzard teased a custom map for StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty titled Blizzard DOTA. It only seemed natural that the creator of Warcraft 3, the game that indirectly introduced the action RTS/MOBA genre into the world with the original DoTA custom map, would make a game of its own. More than a year into development the full potential of this game was understood, and Blizzard immediately began working on a full release independent of StarCraft 2. This game would be titled Heroes of the Storm.

GamesRadar (Jun 03, 2015)
Heroes of the Storm outshines the likes of Dota 2 and League of Legends because it respects the value of your time. Blizzard's 5v5 team brawler takes a familiar framework, where heroes battle back and forth alongside waves of AI-controlled minions, and shaves off all the bits you never knew were so unnecessary until they're gone. Its brilliantly streamlined design makes for a faster, leaner experience that maximizes your fun-per-minute ratio, making its predecessors feel stagnant by comparison.

¿Llegará a conseguirlo?

Heroes of the Storm, initially released June 2, 2015, is a perfect example of what Blizzard does best - they take a game made by someone else that everyone loves, and improve on it (and of course profit hugely from doing so). They did this with Dune and Ultima Online, producing the Warcraft and World of Warcraft games Blizzard is most known for. If you have ever played Defense of the Ancients (more commonly known as DotA) you will instantly recognise Heroes of the Storm for what it essentially is - the same game, but better.

I hated MOBAs. These weird games that called themselves Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas have all but supplanted my beloved Real Time Strategy genre. Requiring minute micromanagement, synchronized teamwork, and a critical familiarity with dozens of heroes and hundreds of abilities, MOBAs are not exactly known for their accessibility.

(Second review)

Dacă vor remedia asta, vor face abilități selectabile ceva mai adaptate eroilor și vor îmbunătăți interfața, Heroes of the Storm chiar că are potențial colosal.

Worth Playing (Jun 11, 2015)
In many ways, Heroes of the Storm is a homecoming of sorts for the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre. Games such as League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth wouldn't exist without the original Defense of the Ancients (DotA) mod for Warcraft III. It is only fitting then, that Blizzard itself would eventually try its hand at designing a MOBA game from scratch, and with Heroes of the Storm, it's safe to say that Blizzard has succeeded.

Blizzard have a formula that they apply to most of their titles – easy to learn, difficult to master. When I first got wind of them wanting to apply this science to their upcoming MOBA, Heroes of the Storm, I laughed for a week straight. A MOBA, made easy? Impossible and unheard of! I myself spent hundreds of hours struggling to understand the core mechanics of the genre when I first started, all the while suffering the abuse of the “pros” who had undergone the same painful initiation long before I had. Call me a tad sceptical about Blizzard’s grand idea, ok?

Heroes of the Storm is not just another MOBA. It's a comment on the MOBA by the company whose games inspired the genre. With it, Blizzard step into territory that is both deeply familiar and deeply alien to them: a world of chunky characters and competitive strategy that they embrace alongside a world of fathomless homebrew complexity that they don't.

The Escapist (Jun 02, 2015)
But back to criticism. For a game so focused on teamwork and cooperation, it is surprising that Heroes lacks in-built voice chat. While you can coordinate reasonably well simply by using the minimap ping feature, there are often times that that doesn't convey the degree of precision you need, and having to stop to type out something can be a disastrous time sink. Of course, voice chat leads to a whole new world of toxicity, which Blizzard has made an active effort to avoid, such as by denying you the ability to talk to the enemy team, but that's what the mute function is for. Voice chat was a failed feature in StarCraft 2 because StarCraft 2 is not a team-based game, Blizzard - don't let that failed venture make you give up on voice chat in a game where communication is vitally important.

Heroes of the Storm might be a new MOBA on the block, but in some ways it feels just a bit like coming home.

IGN (Jun 02, 2015)
The intoxicating high of overwhelming victory in Heroes of the Storm is stark in contrast to its painful, frustrating sense of crushing defeat. I left each game feeling either godlike because of its superb characters and combat, or worthless because of the disruptive secondary objectives and poor progression system.

Darkstation (Jun 22, 2015)
Heroes of the Storm is not Dota 2 or LoL. In fact, it’s hard to liken it to another MOBA as it brings differentiating factors to the table that make it unique. Sure, Heroes of the Storm borrows bits and pieces of the well-established MOBA genre like laning, leveling up your hero, the necessity of teamwork and character archetypes, but it also gives these features their own flair.
