Imperium is a game of intergalactic conquest and exploration played over a period of months. Up to 253 players can be on at one time and it features in-game messaging and chat. When creating your account you choose a race and you start out on that races home planet with a single class-A starship. Explore nearby planets and colonize them to expand your fleet. You can declare treaties with other players and races, and trade goods with them also. Games typically last several months.

A computer does not need to support graphics as the game can be played through Telnet, but an 80 column (or more) display is recommended, and the ability to display and send both upper and lower case letters is required. There are various frontends for different platforms that implement visual elements instead of the text based interface.
