Am I insane? For this game, yes. As concerns other matters ... you be the judge. Enter, if you dare, the horrific world of The Blackstone Chronicles. But beware, for if you run into me, I may then be the one trying to save you. What is that clicking noise? you ask. Oh, that is John Saul. I kidnaped him and put him in the little room that Josh was in so that he could work on the add-ons and sequels for The Blackstone Chronicles. Type faster, John. Come, mousey, we must go now.
The Blackstone Chronicles is an excellent game for beginners; none of the puzzles are nonsensical in that inimitable Monkey Island fashion that we all know and love, and they all serve to propel the plot ever forward. But it is also a tasty treat for the more jaded adventurer because of the strength of the narrative and the skillful intertwining of all of the subplots. I give it my highest recommendation, the Four Fat Chicks Gold Star.
Adventure Lantern (Oct, 2006)
Overall, Blackstone Chronicles is a great game that will play with your mind and not let go for quite a while. I can honestly say this because it made me feel things I didn't want to feel. I can also say I won't revisit this game for exactly the same reason. If you can handle the dark subject matter, then you should definitely give Blackstone Chronicles: An Adventure in Terror a play. It is a true example of storytelling at its best.
Computer gamers are not really insane (not most of them, anyway), and I apologize profusely to anyone who might have been offended by that statement. I was simply struck by the high moral caliber of the insane characters in this story. In any event, BLACKSTONE CHRONICLES is definitely a unique piece of work with a gripping storyline, wonderful graphics, and a most talented cast. It should not be missed.
The Blackstone Chronicles is a very welcome traditional adventure game. The past year has not seen the release of many games of this type, and of those there were few really good ones. This game has an excellent story, decent puzzles, and ties it all together with wonderful voices and music. Bottom Line: Very nicely detailed game environment, phenomenal voice acting and music. The puzzles are very fair - some are easy, others are more challenging. The story is very disturbing without being gory. In these days when adventure games are few and far between, The Blackstone Chronicles is a true diamond in the rough.
Mystery Manor (Aug 07, 2004)
The puzzles in this game were of medium difficulty, and most were adequately clued for the player. There were no absurd combinations to achieve a puzzle goal, all were realistic. All the puzzles were well integrated into the story line, though most required a bit of backtracking to find information or obtain an inventory item. There were several timed sequences, all of which resulted in your death if not completed in time. At each of these, though, you were given a choice of a hint, the answer, or just a restart to the beginning of that sequence. And in no case was the time too short to complete the goal comfortably. If you have to die in a game, this is the way to handle it! All in all this was a very satisfying game to play, if not exactly a likable one.
Power Unlimited (Apr, 1999)
Overall, Blackstone Chronicles is an above-average adventure game, in spite of its faults. Well-researched, frightening, with intelligent puzzles and an interesting story, only the lack of subtitles and the weak ending keep it from being really superior. While not especially difficult, it should give anyone looking for "adult horror" a good(?) time.

I don't know that 'fun' is the correct word to use here given the subject matter of the game, but I did enjoy playing Blackstone Chronicles despite it being a little short and possibly a little too easy for experienced adventurers. On the other hand, players new to the genre may well find it to be much more of a challenge. I must say that Legend games rarely disappoint and this one continues their fine tradition of providing a strong, compelling narrative within an adventure game framework that really allows you to step into the story.

That's the tag line for John Saul's Blackstone Chronicles, and for once there's truth in advertising. Yes, indeed, the game is a modern-day thriller involving an old, abandoned mansion haunted by ghosts, with a plot driven by a deranged, diabolical villain and his insatiable desire for vengeance.
IGN (Jan 21, 1999)
The game is very cerebral and rarely relies on the manipulation puzzles found in other games. You'll need to think things through in this game but rest assured that your efforts will be rewarded. The horror in the game isn't physical either. The game relies on your sympathy with the inmates to create a real feeling of dread. Although there are some situations and objects that will disturb you, the stories of the inmates will really get you. All in all The Blackstone Chronicles is a fun and rewarding game for those with the patience to see it through. You may find yourself cutting on the lights and looking over your shoulder as you play. Oh, and be sure to check in those closets.

If you have been playing Myst or Riven for about the last year and you are stuck, go to the store and buy Blackstone Chronicles. It will boost your self-esteem by about 100 points because you will have no problem getting through it and it will make you feel like you are smarter than the average cookie. If you are new to these types of puzzle games, I would highly recommend that you start with a game like this one and slowly move up to harder titles. Be forewarned; the ending was kind of cheesy. I found myself going through the game wondering how I could alter the code to make it a better game (I guess that is the programmer in me). It seemed like Red Orb could have done a better job, but they wanted to push it out the door.

GameGenie (1999)
Overall, Blackstone Chronicles was a decent game that had nice still graphics and nice sound effects. The gameplay was simple and easy, and the puzzles were challenging, as were the mysteries that had to be solved. Quite simply, this is the same type of game as Myst, Riven, and the rest of the clones out on the et, so if a person has enjoyed those types of games and enjoys terror, then they'll enjoy this game. As for anyone else, it might hold your interest for a little while, unless you truly enjoyed this type of puzzle and mystery game.
There are enough good jolts, however, to make the game recommendable, if not rave-worthy. Elements such as dismembered-and-bottled children, Poe-inspired antics with a pendulum, and more evil torture-chairs than any other game in recent memory guarantee that Blackstone will appeal to its intended audience. If you want caviar, don't eat hot dogs; but if you like hot dogs, John Saul's Blackstone Chronicles provides all the crunchy snouts and entrails you could possibly desire.
Power Play (Dec, 1998)
