Intriguing, intense and extreme, Killer7 is as relevant, playable, and valuable as it has ever been. This if the game that really put Goichi Suda's name on the map as one of Japan's better artists in the field, and to this day nothing else has been able to come even close to offer what Killer7 offers. It's genuinely innovative, highly creative, and a legitimate masterpiece that will, one day, surely find itself in art galleries and a part of exhibitions to display the very finest examples of the medium.
Killer7 is a work of art that surprised many in the past. Now that it’s been remastered for the PC, a lot of new players and old fans alike can finally experience the game in gorgeous high definition. Personally, the game has always been a landmark title to me that set a creative standard that has yet to be topped. It’s absolutely polarizing through the ways it breaks conventions in both the story and the gameplay. Overall, Killer7 is a game I absolutely recommend to those interested in layered, artistic experiences or highly-stylized games with surprises at every turn.
Killer7 is the kind of game that defines what a cult classic is. Off the wall story and characters which push the envelope far past what a lot of people are normally comfortable with combined with unique gameplay that may have some rough edges, but make up for them by feeling unique. This may be a remake of a under-performing console from over 10 years ago, but in today’s gaming market it looks and feels just as fresh as the day it was released. A game that not only deserved, but needed a port worthy of it, and I’m glad to say that it lives up to it.
Das ist allerdings auch sperrig und sicherlich auch ein Stück weit prätentiös, aber es verkommt nie zum Selbstzweck. Da trotz all der (gewollten) Verwirrung das Spielprinzip zugänglich ist, lasse ich mich gerne in diesen surrealistischen Wahnsinn entführen. Auch für einen zweiten Durchlauf, denn wenn man das Spiel einmal durchgespielt hat, schaltet sich ein besonders schwerer Modus mit einer achten Persona frei.
Auf dem PC ist durch die verbesserte Steuerung der normale Schwierigkeitsgrad etwas zu leicht, weshalb ich versierten Action-Spielern empfehle gleich auf schwer (deadly) anzufangen. Die Schwachpunkte der Heavenly Smiles sind dann nicht sofort offensichtlich und die ausgehende Bedrohung von ihnen verstärkt den Horroreffekt. So oder so: Bei Killer7 hatte Suda die volle Kontrolle bei der Entwicklung. Und das merkt man.
Imaginative, beautiful, and utterly strange, but you’ll need to really love the story to endure its idiosyncratic combat.
Even if I find myself in the middle with Killer7, I'd still recommend everyone give this a go. It may not be a game you need to finish, necessarily, but it's utterly unique and needs to be seen first hand. I don't think Suda hit his stride until his next title (No More Heroes), but you can see the seeds of greatness were planted with Killer7.
