ActionTrip (Jan 17, 2001)
The graphical design is quite good for a 2D RTS/RPG (And it looks a helluva lot like Warcraft II -- Ed). Unfortunately, the fact that it only supports 800x600 and 640x480 resolutions spoils the impression a bit. Kingdom Under Fire is very contagious, and considering the fact that it is based on two titles that had been true hits in their own time, it's bound to achieve a notable success on the market. It might be in many ways unoriginal, but the balanced gameplay and fun heroes should easily compensate for occasional feelings of déjà vu (i.e. Matrix glitches).

As I just stated, the combination of RPG and RTS is definitely stellar, but the fact that this combo is restricted to the official campaign is not. In fact, the campaign editor proves to be a bit weak overall, lacking triggers or scripting capability, which will assuredly diminish the replay-ability of the game to some degree. There are only two factions as well, which is a strike against KUF, but at least the factions are done well. Add in a mixed bag of graphics and great sound, and you get a fairly solid game.

Een achterhaalde Warcraft 2 Rip-off?

In general, Phantagram did a passable job with Kingdom Under Fire. If the first patch, which should already be available, takes care of most of the AI problems such as pathfinding, they'll have a playable game on their hands.

It's less of an issue for me that Kingdom Under Fire seems like a copy of Blizzard's heavy hitters. Lots of games are alike and if one company has a good idea, then why shouldn't other developers start copying it? No, my big problem with Kingdom Under Fire isn't its lack of originality -- it's the lack of inspiration that went into the imitation. While it's certainly a good game, nothing about it stands out as great. Fans of fantasy strategy would do better to wait for Warcraft III, which should be out soon. You can have your robot servant drive you to the software store in your rocket car.

Kingdom Under Fire: A War of Heroes has some nice qualities and some bad ones. It is a game that does grow on the player, the more times it is launched. At first look, it seemed to be a tired plot revisited. However, the more times it was played, the easier it was to get into the game, and to even enjoy it. It is not the best game in this genre (go ahead and pick whichever one you like), and is likely to get washed away in the coming months by other products. It does take up a lot of hard-drive space. And that is definitely not a selling point for this product. But it does have solid graphics to spur it along.

Kingdom Under Fire isn't a bad game, just unremarkable. The poor AI and lack of an in-game save option makes the single player campaigns frustrating and unrewarding, and the role-playing elements don't quite work as well as they perhaps should. The rather primitive graphics engine doesn't do the game justice either, which is a shame because there is a good game somewhere in there trying to break out. If you're a multiplayer strategy fanatic it might be worth a look, and you will almost always find opponents waiting online to play against, but for the lone gamer it's hard to recommend.

FiringSquad (Feb 01, 2001)
Although fun for a few levels, the problems in this game quickly build up to the point where they bury any fun you might have been having with a mountain of frustration. If they patch the game and allow in-level saves then you can add 10% to this score, but as it stands you really can't enjoy the single player campaigns without being able to save your progress. The bad acting, low-res graphics and mediocre playability can't easily be patched away, however.

Game Over Online (Feb 24, 2001)
When the war is over and the sun sets on Bersiah, Kingdom Under Fire is no better than the sum of its parts. The real-time strategy mode recycles ideas from Warcraft II and the role-playing levels do the same, only with Diablo. The potential for success is certainly present, but a number of issues arise throughout the game, among them a lack of a save game feature. Unless you don’t mind the recycled material, there’s just not enough imagination or charisma in Kingdom Under Fire for this reviewer to recommend it.

GameSpot (Jan 18, 2001)
A few years ago, Kingdom Under Fire may have been less disappointing - but since so many innovative and impressive real-time strategy games were released in the last year, it will probably be very tedious for anyone who doesn't still prefer older games in the genre. Die-hard real-time strategy fans may find something to like in Kingdom Under Fire, but everyone else might as well keep waiting for Blizzard's next big hit.

GameStar (Germany) (Jan, 2001)

Old PC Gaming (Nov 01, 2016)
The Diablo-esque dungeon crawls provide a break from the strategic gameplay by providing new frustrations of their own. The view is fixed tightly on the main hero, which can be a problem if another hero wanders off-screen. Overall, the role-playing missions play a lot like Diablo minus the fun. Their sparse look and even sparser monster populations simply lack the visceral feel of Diablo. In sum, the biggest problem with Kingdom Under Fire is that neither the real-time strategy nor role-playing parts are very good, and will likely disappoint both camps.

Just Adventure (Mar 28, 2003)
The worst thing about Kingdom Under Fire is that it stinks with potential. The RPG mode could have been so much more. The maps could have been more inspiring. There could have been an in-game save feature. Alas, we will never know. Good music, graphics, and story are nothing if a game's no fun to play. Only try Kingdom Under Fire if you really, really can't wait until WarCraft III.

The concept of allowing your principal characters to develop via the occasional Diablo-like RPG mission is an interesting one, and helps to flesh out the story, giving it further depth. Unfortunately, the strategic aspect is fairly lacking, leaving players to fall into a generic “attrition war,” with success going to whoever manages to overwhelm his opponent first. Nevertheless, this might even have come across as a decent if not flawed title if it weren’t for the utterly inexplicable lack of an in-game save option. This problem also forces you to keep your Hero as far away from the action as possible, as his death will instantly trigger the loss of the mission. Since the entire title is built around the concept of gradual character development through combat, the lack of a save option instantly nullifies any and all value that the innovation might have brought.

My advice to Korean developer Phantagram is this: Next time, don’t bite off more than you can chew. And don’t rehash something we’ve seen a million times before, just because the original game was great (actually, that goes out to all game designers). We love DIABLO and WARCRAFT as much as anyone, but we don’t like cheap imitations that bring nothing new to the table.
