Games that stir up controversy to get publicity are generally crap. However, take away the violence and swearing from Kingpin and you've still got an awesome game. (...) Ignore the palaver surrounding Kingpin and get yourself a copy. It plays like a dream and will have you whooping with joy after every level is successfully completed.
Oldies Rising (Aug 06, 2008)
Na.

Game Over Online (Jul 05, 1999)
Kingpin: Life of Crime is one of the most violent, foul mouthed, and entertaining first person shooters to date. What makes Kingpin such a standout game is the new innovations such as taking diplomatic approaches to situations. But be warned, this isn’t for the kiddies, the rating on the box of M (mature) definitely applies to Kingpin. If you get offended by swearing, don’t get Kingpin because you just won’t get the feel of the game with the censored version. I can just tell that Congress is going to have a field day with Kingpin, but what the hell do they know, they think Doom is the latest in first person carnage.
The gameplay itself is a touch derivative, of course, and the cursing sometimes grated on my nerves, even though I could accept why it was there. Kingpin just didn’t seem right in PG13 mode, but that’s just because I wanted it all -- blood, gore, cursing. If the game didn’t skip quite as much when there’s not much going on, as far as I can tell, I would be an excessively happy camper. As it is, I’m just an eminently happy one. If you can handle the excess of everything, and like the idea of being a street thug beating the crap out of other street thugs, you’ll like this game... a lot. Same goes for if you like 3D games. It’s a must-buy
Power Unlimited (Jun, 1999)
Take that mothafucka!
PC Zone (Aug 15, 2001)
Believe the hype: Kingpin is packing one. Alongside the controversy, there's a brilliant mixture of adventure and 3-D shooter elements, with a strong story and even stronger visual settings. It's tough, and unforgiving at times, but you couldn't expect anything less from a game as gritty as this. The PC highlight of this summer.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Aug 31, 1999)

IGN (Jul 16, 1999)
I haven't stopped playing Kingpin: Life of Crime since the moment I installed it. It's kind of scary. I haven't shaved, I'm getting zits in all sorts of weird places -- I'm a real mess. Better still, at least I don't look like one of those Kingpin goons after a point-blank debate with a Tommy gun. And that's where I'll start, Kingpin's look and overall presentation will literally blow your head off. At first glance, the first half-an-hour, or so, I was a little concerned. After playing games such as Half-Life, Unreal, Quake II, games with tons of color and diversity in textures, Kingpin's dark and dirty look was a little bland in comparison and took a little getting use to.
Ars Technica (Jul, 1999)
I like the realism, and the graphics and sound are impressive. The multiplayer features look impressive, and I can't wait until they work out the bugs so that I can actually play on-line and not get totally aggravated by constant lag. On the other hand, the foul language does get old, and the level load times are abominable, but at least I can save any time I want, unlike other games... Basically, if you like bloody, gory FPS games, this game is calling for you. If you want a thought-provoking, puzzle-ridden, FPS, you probably won't be happy with this game.

Is Kingpin an involving and intense first-person shooter? Absolutely. Does it fall short of its potential? Sadly, yes. With a little more work, Kingpin could have been a five-star title. Yet despite its flaws, this is still a strong offering. Just walking around the brilliantly constructed virtual slums is almost reason enough to pick up this game. Between the harsh language, hostile residents and gritty environments, Kingpin plays upon our most rational fears. It succeeds in replicating that anxiety you feel when you take a wrong turn and end up on the “bad side of town.” And despite the controversy this title has stirred up, Kingpin is more than just Quake II with the “F-word.” With cutting-edge graphics, a remarkably powerful atmosphere, unique NPC interaction and ruthless combat, Kingpin is an intense experience and a strong addition to the FPS genre.
KINGPIN offers an effective and memorable thrill ride, well paced and well designed. More than that I don’t believe is fair to demand. When did we start expecting to get our models of moral conduct from our computer games? All I can say is that you won’t find any here. But if what you’re looking for is a compelling piece of entertainment, that you will find. Assuming your stomach is as strong as your trigger finger is fast, KINGPIN will blow you away.

Kingpin - Life of Crime er det første spil, der tager gangstertemaet op i First Person Shooter genren. Og det er lykkedes rigtigt godt.
Even despite the flaws, Kingpin is great fun. It could have been right up there with the best, but it still deserves honorable mention. Don't worry about the language and violence, it's not the only thing that makes Kingpin: Life of Crime tick. Underneath the hostility is still a solid, fun game that will keep you coming back. It's definitely worth every cent of your money.

My first exposure to Kingpin was the playable demo released a few months ago. I found it more enjoyable to watch others play rather than attempt the game myself. That's why I was pleasantly surprised upon playing the full version. It was just as interesting as the demo had been but I was quickly sucked into the ghetto world, rap music and bawdy language. I actually wanted to play!
Entertainment Weekly (Jun 25, 1999)
We've seen realistic, depraved violence like this before: Grand Theft Auto, Carmageddon, and Redneck Rampage have all appeared on parental watchdog lists. But those are the videogame equivalents of B movies. Kingpin is far more ambitious, with realistic visuals that rival anything currently on PCs and a high-profile soundtrack by rap group Cypress Hill. Perhaps most noteworthy is the game's liberal use of profanity. Goons call you ''pieces of crap'' and threaten to ''kick your ass''; the F- and S-words also make extended appearances. With enough blue talk to make Samuel L. Jackson's Pulp Fiction character blush, Kingpin makes you step back and say, ''Whoa! Kids shouldn't be playing this.''
GameSpot (Jul 14, 1999)
The list of annoying weaknesses and underused features is long but doesn't ruin Kingpin. To say it isn't much more than what's come before shouldn't be taken as a complete dismissal; it merely separates the game from a fully realized landmark product like Half-Life. There is fun to be had here, and the game offers a more than acceptable amount of intense gunplay. And for those of you worried about your delicate sensibilities, the game has a low-violence install that bleeps out the swearing - making the dialogue a long string of beeps punctuated by the words "mother," "you," and "yourself."
Retro Gamer (Jul 16, 2009)
It's not or the squeamish, but if you can get past the gore and swearing, you'll find a solid blaster.
Just Games Retro (Mar 15, 2014)
I was reluctant to dive into Kingpin, because somewhere along the way, I got the impression that it was a buggy, brainless shooter that liked to say “fuck” a lot. At least all patched up, only the last part turned out to be true. Kingpin’s AI buddies work well, without entrusting the gameplay to them. Its hub areas and quest-based gameplay help the city feel believable and keep you from simply trashing bad guy after bad guy, level after level. Even its inclusion of Cypress Hill tracks is more a benefit than a gimmick. Its shooting and damage models could use a good tweak, which means anyone who doesn’t love a good FPS will probably want to skip, but those who do will find a better game than they likely expected.
PC Accelerator (Sep, 1999)
I actually paid $60 of my own cash for this game and it wasn't a complete waste. There is fun to be had, moments of greatness, and it is a great way to get rid of pent-up aggression - but overall, the game just isn't as good at it could have been.
Kingpin was a wonderful visual ride, but as a game it did not do so well. Despite its lack of gameplay, as the game progressed, I became increasingly paranoid that I would die from some unseen enemy. It got to a point where I was saving my game every few minutes, something that hasn't happened to me in a long time. The horrible and sometimes non-existent storyline kept it from flowing logically. The serious unbalance of the enemy versus the player was so bad at times that it seemed completely hopeless that you could pass certain areas. I also saved the game as often as I did because of the long load times. In tough areas, one could get killed three or four times before getting past that area. If saving my game would allow me to bypass one extra level load, I would save it. The glitches in the game that caused it to jerk were also horrible. Kingpin would do well as a 3D movie,- if they could find the story- but fares not so well as a game.
Game Revolution (Aug 01, 1999)
All in all, Kingpin is best described as a failed attempt at a good idea. With some neat new additions and great graphics, some gamers will definitely have fun with this title. The sheer difficulty and the idiotic constant swearing, however, will discourage most people. Rudeness does not an adult game make. If you're looking for an adult game, try a much better Interplay game like Fallout 2 and leave Kingpin for the 13 year-olds it was designed for.
Entertainmentopia (Nov 18, 2001)
In the end Kingpin is a game only worthy of those who can stand what it truly stands for. It is a great game at the core and will be a standout in the genre for years to come. A sequel would be great and would be on your must-buy list as much as this game should be. So if you are mature enough to handle this game, go down to your local retailer or online store and order this game, you won’t be sorry. If you got the skills, you will be the next Kingpin.
VRgames (Aug 06, 2016)
Kingpin: Life of Crime Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.
