What it boils down to, and this is the most important factor in any game, is that it's fun. You can play a nice leisurely game, taking days between turns, or you can swap emails back and forth as fast as possible and play several games a day. I have got to say that this is easily one of the funnest games I've played in years.
With the depth and variety of game-play it offers, LSN is well worth the $25 subscription fee (purchased directly from www.lasersquadnemesis.com), which allows unlimited games for six months. It has the same kind of addictive magic, suspense, and excitement that the X-Com games had, with the bonus of devious human minds in place of stilted A.I.
To remember the roots of Laser Squad you must travel back in time to 1988. Featuring an isometric game with a novel idea of “action points”, two brothers Julian and Nick Gollop produced what was one of the most addictive games for the ZX Spectrum. They did it all again (and even better) six years later with the Blockbuster “Xcom” One of my all time favourite games in 1994. And so Icronticgames was excited to learn about Laser Squad: Nemesis earlier this year, If Julian and Nick Gollop know one thing its how to write classic games enjoyable games. Just Play (renowned for there excellent choice in strategy games) decided to become an official publisher for the CODO industries play by email affair, and it’s the boxed version we are reviewing at Icronticgames.
On the down side, the game is missing one of its advertised races and limits how gamer's can play. The Spawn which, with their egg-spewing queen and deadly-in-close fighters, look to be a blast, didn't make muster at the game's release. Nor are there a variety of game types. In fact there is only one, a thirty-turn kill-more-of-them-than-they-kill-of-you deathmatch. Codo games promises to add the race, and expand the game options in the near future. Until they do, however, it's a two combatant, one-mission type game.
That isn't a bad thing. The game is loads of fun in its current state, but would have been better if released as a full feature product. Nevertheless, Laser Squad Nemesis is one of the better games to come out of the blender this year.

Currently, LSN is going through the usual newborn phase all online games go through; charming the pants off everyone who plays it and occasionally crying and messing its nappy (you can only open doors by shooting at them for instance), but the good news is that it won't be long before it's cooing and pulling itself up to stand. Evolution will be rapid, we are told, with new units, maps and options set to be added on a regular basis, along with campaign modes and a single-player game. No doubt by the end of your first subscription period the game will boast many more features than it has currently, but for now it's the perfect game to play in between bouts of Net surfing and more serious game playing. If you're not sure, hit the game forums and get someone to challenge you. I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised.
In these days of high speed Internet access it is nice to come across a game that can be played just as effectively with something like a 28 bps modem. The community is an absolute must – you may well find yourself playing someone ‘just around the corner’ and can meet up for a good after battle beer session. Some people remembering the original as fondly as I do will be upset about the lack of a single player game (one is promised though) and this should not influence your decision to buy the game – it is worth it.
Laser Squad Nemesis has finally found its way to retail shelves. The game was designed and developed by Julian Gollop and Nick Gollop, the brain trust behind the classic turn-based strategy game, X-COM: UFO Defense. Though it's new to retail outlets, Laser Squad was actually released a couple of years ago as a play-by-e-mail-only strategy game. After a couple years of additions and tweaks, the Gollop brothers and Codo Games finally added campaign missions for single-player action.
The unconventional email-based system applied in Laser Squad Nemesis gives it some uniqueness in a crowded strategy market, but ironically it also gives the game its greatest liability. What redeems LSN from being an exercise in tedium is that the touch of a master’s hand can be felt in almost every brushstroke. The simple yet deep strategic elements hold barrels of replay value because you seem to learn a new trick each time you compete, win or lose. It’s obvious even at a casual glance that LSN was crafted by people that have been down the road and definitely know the way to the land of strategic plentitude.
