Mania (Dec 19, 2008)
Left 4 Dead is my second favorite game of the year (after Fallout 3). I find myself compelled to keep going back to play more. While I regularly tempted to test myself on the harder difficulty level and to try and gather new achievements, the game doesn’t offer a particularly deep experience. Game play grows a bit repetitive and each movie/mission is just the very same game play on a different map. I’m hoping that new online modes, maps and weapons will be offered in the future. I also experienced occasional glitching such as seeing an undead arm flailing through a closed door or, when out on a ledge, watching your teammate take a step off the ledge only to remain in mid-air. All of these are relatively minor quibbles as the game succeeds so well at what it sets out to do; plop you smack dab in the middle of an honest-to-goodness-mess-with-your-head zombie apocalypse.
DarkZero (Jan 03, 2009)
Once again Valve show other game developers how to create genuinely unique and immersive title. Every aspect of Left 4 Dead has been refined and tweaked to perfection. It’s addictive and atmospheric, and it contains undoubtedly the best co-op gameplay we’ve seen yet. The survival horror genre has just been revolutionised, the zombie Horde is beating at you door. Grab a shotgun and fight for your life!
G4 TV: X-Play (Nov 18, 2008)
Fast zombies? Check. Non-stop tension and intensity? Check. The quality of gameplay we expect from Valve? Check. When it comes to co-op multiplayer, Valve is consistently ahead of the curve and excellent at making games that force players to work together, which is incredibly welcome if you’ve experienced the frustration of the one kid on your online team playing death match while the rest of you try to cap an objective. Don’t worry about that kid, not only can you vote him out of the game, he’s having his brains ripped out by a Hunter several hundred yards down the road in front of you. You’re not even going to bother to revive him. For any fan of zombies, horror, shooters or anyone looking for a multiplayer experience that feels new, Left 4 Dead is a must-buy. You’ll be wasting the undead long into the New Year, especially if you want the achievement for killing 53,595 zombies. Yes, that’s just one more than Dead Rising’s Zombie Genocider achievement.
No matter what you say, Left 4 Dead is an excellent title. It gets everything right. It’s simple enough for anyone to play, unique enough for everyone to enjoy, and intelligent enough for no one to get tired of. Isn’t that the game we’ve been asking for?
L4D is extremely fun and adrenaline inducing. There has been no game so far that kept us so sprung on our wheels like a cat on caffeine and not once did the action ever go stale. You’d be lucky if you got a 2 minutes breathing space for yourself!
Genredefinerende? Bandebrydende?
YouGamers (Nov 27, 2008)
Left 4 Dead is, above anything else, a fun and replayable co-op experience. Everything is elaborately designed to support the co-op gameplay and the moody zombie theme. So it doesn't have a heavily scripted 30-hour storyline with dozens of maps? Who cares! Refreshingly original and polished to the point of being a textbook case how to make a proper PC game.
GamingExcellence (Jan 05, 2009)
Left 4 Dead is a fantastic experience so long as you can get yourself into games with good players. Even more than any other multiplayer focused FPS you desperately need a good, or at least intelligent, team to get you through these stages with minimal fuss. With the right team you can have an absolute blast for hours on end, more so than you might expect considering the limited number of stages available here. Left 4 Dead is a different sort of game with a lot of potential and any future downloadable content can only expand on that.
Left4Dead is a multiplayer masterpiece and if you have any interest at all about playing online or with friends then you simply need to make sure you pick this game up as soon as you can. The online community is already huge and it will go from strength to strength over the coming months. It is entertaining, fun and most of all will get you laughing with your buddies. If all you do is play single player, then you might want to think twice, because the single player campaign is not really the whole point of the experience.
That Gaming Site (Nov 23, 2008)
Left 4 Dead is the pinnacle of zombie survival horror, the AI director will definitely keep you coming back for more.
FiringSquad (Dec 01, 2008)
Left 4 Dead isn’t perfect though, the slight bugs and connection issues can be annoying, and the Source engine has almost outlived its ability to remain useful. But the amazing audio production, well crafted atmosphere and emphasis on teamwork, along with hilarious zombie humor, works to create a truly original game that is only gives more credit to an already longstanding tradition of excellence at Valve. Good luck, and we’ll see you at the zombie apocalypse.
93 PC Gaming (Dec 01, 2008)
Considering the amount of games that have made their way to retail throughout this holiday season, Left 4 Dead stands as one of the few that you simply must buy. It’s an atmospheric, immersive co-op experience from both the survivor and infected perspective, and it’s all polished to a mighty, brilliant sheen. If you’re still not sure, just knowing Left 4 Dead is under the Valve name should be enough. In a perfect world, Left 4 Dead would have had just a bit more content, but what we get is still more than filling. Enjoy it, love it, and then spend weeks exhausting what the game has to offer. Make some memories and have boatloads of fun. Left 4 Dead is simply spectacular.
Atomic Gamer (Dec 08, 2008)
Left 4 Dead is built for setting up great moments, each of which is unique to those who were there playing at the time. There are daring escapes, brutal one-man last stands as the hordes come from all sides, zombies surprising people by bashing through walls (and hearing them yelp on the mic), and just solid shooter action as four people put their backs to each other and take down dozens of the undead in a symphony of bullets only interrupted by the four survivors' "Reloading!" announcements. If you're looking for the cooperative PC experience of 2008 and you're more interested in guns and zombies than in orcs and swords, then Left 4 Dead is very much a must-have game.
91 (Nov 21, 2008)
Game of the Year hands down. Yep, I know, even with all the other blockbusters out there, I still believe Left 4 Dead deserves the crown. As per the review’s subtitle, yes it is sex in video game form. I can’t put it any other way than that. I don’t think there will be a better zombie shooter, ever. If you don’t buy this, I… I… huh!?
The A.V. Club (Dec 01, 2008)
Frustration sets in when: If you aren't playing with other humans, you're doing it wrong. The game will provide computer-controlled 'bots to fill out your party, but they play too conservatively. Left 4 Dead is one of the rare cases in gaming where human error makes the game more fun.
Gaming Nexus (Nov 19, 2008)
While it's a short campaign for all four, the game's solid as a rock and offers a good deal of replayability. The graphics and animations are some of the best I've seen for a zombie game and having three others play with you is just a load of fun. Playing as the zombies is also a nice feature as well.
91 (Nov 19, 2008)
Ultimately you simply must give Left 4 Dead your time. It'll compete with Call of Duty: World at War on release day, but there's no reason but for poverty itself, that you shouldn't potentially purchase both games. There's so much tension and just pure fun to be had here that it is quite impossible to ignore, and if you're a player that craves genuine team cohesion then this could be one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences you've ever had. The only thing this game is missing is a G-String clad and rotting Jenna Jameson.
Game Over Online (Dec 01, 2008)
Unless you're genuinely lacking anyone to play it with though, Left 4 Dead is easily one of this year's must-have games. There's a kind of fun it produces which is rarely found in titles of any genre, let alone something which makes an effort to cater to zombie fans – it's the fun that can only come out of good co-op play with friends, something publishers are finally starting to realize. The real test for the game will be longevity, since online play could peter out in just a few months without extra campaigns. I suspect they're coming however, because response to the game has been extremely warm so far.
GameGrin (Dec 12, 2008)
Yet despite these problems, these are easily addressed in future patches and knowing Valve's dedication and commitment, these will be rectified. Overall, Left 4 Dead is an exciting and innovative original idea and there is no other game like it. With a group of friends covering your back, this is quite simply an essential experience.
Cheat Happens (Dec 30, 2008)
Though L4D’s four different campaigns (each including five different levels) can be completed in under 3 hours, the director will ensure that you won’t be getting bored anytime soon. Valve nails the b-movie zombie feel perfectly with a mix of impressive visuals (great animations make up for the seemingly dated visuals), eerie music and frantic gameplay. Left 4 Dead should be played by anyone who appreciates a good horror experience or a quality shooter.
Factornews (Dec 28, 2008)
Blend Games (Nov 22, 2008)
Prompt DLC or not, I'll probably be playing this long after I've abandoned most of the other multiplayer shooters I've accumulated this holiday season, though, because no other shooter offers this depth of cooperative gameplay. Within the crowded shooter market, Left 4 Dead created a unique niche for itself.
UOL Jogos (Nov 27, 2008)
Hooked Gamers (Feb 27, 2009)
So, in closing, besides those few negative points of limited maps, repetitiveness and rating, L4D is an extremely well done and solid title. When you get down to it, shooting hordes of zombies in the face with an automatic shotgun is nothing but pure old fashioned fun. Add in three other human players together trying to stay alive long enough to get from safe room to safe room while being chased by the above-mentioned horde, you have yourself the making of a great time. L4D has received nothing but awards and praise since its release and for a good reason. If you are a fan of the horror movie zombie genre, or just a hardcore shooter veteran looking for a new flavor, L4D defiantly deserves a spot in your collection.
ActionTrip (Dec 22, 2008)
Valve did not disappoint. If you're looking for something to buy this Xmas for your gaming needs Left 4 Dead should be money well-spent. Both shooter fans and survival horror aficionados will enjoy it.
Bit-Tech (Nov 20, 2008)
It’s fair to say you can judge a game by its “remember the bit where” factor. You’re talking to friends about a favourite game, when a memory of a particularly awesome moment you’ve shared pops out and reminds you all just how great that game was. Left 4 Dead is full of such moments. It’s an ever changing, ever challenging and ever tense multiplayer masterpiece which will captivate for as long as you’ve got friends to play it with.
JustPressPlay (Dec 03, 2008)
Left 4 Dead is an amazingly fun and entertaining game. I recommend that everyone buy this title as soon as they can. They will not regret it--it's not scary, but the atmosphere is pitch-perfect for the subject-matter. The characters are packed with personality, and even after hearing "I'm reloading" near-constantly for almost three hours it still doesn't irritate me. That's an accomplishment. Valve's most recent game is just as good as the rest of its library, and that's saying something. The bottom line is that if you enjoy games of any kind, you'll enjoy Left 4 Dead. You say you don't have a rig expensive enough to run recent games? You can run Left 4 Dead without a hitch. You say you don't like shooters? You've nothing to worry about, Left 4 Dead sets itself apart from the recent flood of shooters through its attention to detail, and emphasis on simplicity and the fun of plowing down the undead for hours with your friends.
GameSpy (Nov 17, 2008)
One need only look at Left 4 Dead for proof that the gaming landscape is fundamentally changing. This is a game that was obviously envisioned from the very beginning as a co-op experience, even modeling its single-player campaign to mirror that approach. The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.
UltraNinjas (Nov 18, 2008)
With the campaign mode, versus mode and even a host of achievements to bag-and-tag, you're up for some seriously late nights of infected zombie mayhem. We had a riot - I'm sure you will too.
So what it all boils down to is this: despite a few extremely minor qualms, I can't imagine anyone with an internet connection not being absolutely smitten with this. It's pure, belting, action-packed fun, time and time again. It's a polished, pivotal gem of a title, and it's quickly become my favourite online game by quite some margin. The incredible brains at Valve have somehow followed up their single-player prowess with a multiplayer experience of equally transcendent quality, and I'd be more than happy to play continuously, fighting the hoards, until there were no zombies left.
90 (UK) (Nov 19, 2008)
In short, Left 4 Dead is another deeply professional, personality-filled and progressive take on the shooter from Valve. In a cultural landscape that has as many zombie touchstones as ours, it takes something special to make them shamble appealingly, and Left 4 Dead, both literally and metaphorically, makes them run. In this new co-op landscape, it'll be interesting to see whether anyone can catch up.
90 (Nov 24, 2008)
There are games you want everyone to play, just so they can experience what you've such a good time with, and Left 4 Dead is one of them. It's unlike any other game I've ever played and demonstrates the true power of cooperative gameplay. It's worth noting that the experience is somewhat dulled if played alone, but if you've got online friends or are happy to play with randoms, Left 4 Dead is a game you simply can't pass up. Just make sure you've worked out what you'd do in a zombie outbreak before you start playing, as you won't be able to make anything approaching a sane decision with a screaming witch bearing down on you.
AceGamez (Nov, 2008)
Left 4 Dead is a truly monumental achievement, not only for Valve but for the games industry as a whole - this is what the concept of co-operative play is all about and this is the definitive implementation of it thus far. There are a couple of minor problems - the occasional strange item placement and the small number of campaigns - but these do not detract from the sheer joy, entertainment and addictive quality of the gameplay. Even if you generally prefer single player experiences - like me - you will still find this multiplayer rampage nothing less than an absolute treat, so my advice is very simple: if you have a high speed Internet connection (required to install the game) then rush out and buy Left 4 Dead right now - you absolutely will not regret it.
Worth Playing (Dec 01, 2008)
All in all, Left 4 Dead is a shining example of zombies done right in a video game. It's an action-packed riot with gore galore and is four times as fun with friends. If you have even a minor passing interest in zombies, shooters or horror games in general, you shouldn't pass up the opportunity to play it. If nothing else, think of Left 4 Dead as a virtual zombie plague simulator. When the zombie apocalypse comes, you'll be better prepared than everyone else to deal with the horde.
Gamervision (Dec 02, 2008)
When playing with friends, Left4Dead gives the best cooperative experience in gaming, hands down. Nothing compares. The game is lacking a bit in terms of content, and more weapons and locations would definitely add to the experience, but nothing can take away from the sheer enjoyment value. Valve’s newest might be one of their most masterfully crafted, and the attention to detail is impeccable. It might not win any game-of-the-year awards, but in terms of fun it might beat out anything else this generation has to offer.
PC Games (Germany) (Nov 16, 2008)
GameZone (Dec 03, 2008)
Left 4 Dead is a great multiplayer shooter with many elements that you won’t find in any other shooter this year. The co-op experience is unrivaled and the dynamic AI is an excellent design choice. While more maps would’ve been nice, Left 4 Dead is still a worthy purchase for any fan of multiplayer shooters.

88 (Nov 26, 2008)
What makes Left 4 Dead an internet phenomenon that’s worth buying, beyond the objective qualities that we can point out, is its property of being, as I call it, „visually quotable”. You have utterly no idea, unless you’ve already played it, how many funny, morbid and interesting things can happen in just one hour of playing.
GameStar (Germany) (Nov, 2008)

86 (Dec 25, 2008)
With Left 4 Dead Valve have again done their best to deliver a top game. The addictive gameplay and achievements make for countless hours of fun despite the limited amount of maps and lack of a decent storyline
GameTrailers (Nov 30, 2008)
Left 4 Dead is a fun game while it lasts, but that’s not long. There’s not much nuance to the combat or weapons, but the realistic enemy behavior gives it a sense of unpredictability. The AI director is mostly successful at scaling the difficulty to the skill of the player, and this is one coop game that actually forces you to cooperate. Some will find it refreshingly straightforward, others will find it repetitive, but everyone will have at least a few hours of fun just trying to survive.
Gamer 2.0 (Dec 03, 2008)
It comes down to this: Left 4 Dead is a hell of a lot of fun to play. The eerie calm right before a stampede of bodies comes chasing down a vacant street is amazing, and there’s a palpable sense of teamwork in the air. The little touches are what makes this game so memorable and worthy of survival tales—being able to shoot even when incapacitated, zombies being able to break through doors eventually, the pitch-black office buildings lit only by the torch of your flashlight.
Click! (Jan, 2009)
Polecam!
Games Finder (Dec 20, 2013)
Outside of the campaign players can try their hands at the versus mode which puts four other players in the role of the infected as you compete to see who has the better teamwork.
Meristation (Nov 19, 2008)
Gameplayer (Australia) (Nov 24, 2008)
Gripes aside, Left 4 Dead is a well polished experience that is an absolute blast to play co-operatively with mates (or randoms for that matter). There is also a versus mode that is pretty much the same as co-op except that four players are randomly assigned to one of the zombie boss types and their mission is to take out the four players controlling the survivors. The real meat of Left 4 Dead however has yet to be seen. Valve are the team that spawn games that a large community can take and endlessly tweak, creating user content and mods that extend any of the developer’s games long beyond its first run through. Just look at counter-strike! For Xbox 360 users, this may prove to be a problem though as modding more readily lends itself to the PC community. However, we’re willing to bet that it won’t be too long before console DLC is announced.
For all of its single-player shortcomings, you'll find that the fast-paced thrills of co-op action in Left 4 Dead are second to none. Do yourself a favour: grab a few friends, turn the lights off, turn the sound up and experience the atmosphere of Left 4 Dead.
GameSpot (Nov 20, 2008)
Between the tense campaign and the frenetic Versus mode, Left 4 Dead offers two distinct flavors of multiplayer action that are equally delicious when enjoyed with friends. The single-player experience (and the marginally better but somewhat sluggish split-screen mode) isn't as tasty, simply because the friendly AI can't compare to a human teammate. Between play sessions, you may find yourself craving more maps, but once you're in the game, you'll be so consumed by your quest to survive that you'll likely be grateful for your knowledge of the terrain. It's a tricky proposition for a game to serve up such seemingly meager variety, but Left 4 Dead does so with panache, and gamers will likely be enjoying this recipe for a long time.
Game Revolution (Nov 18, 2008)
What can I say? Left 4 Dead is pretty fun. It’s exactly the type of zombie survival game that the genre has been waiting for. The intensity never lets up for one minute from the time you open the safehouse door to your daring escape at the end of each campaign. You will fight for your survival and have a blast doing it. The only thing lacking is a unique single-player experience, but like I said before, it’s just not that type of game. Just think of it as training for the inevitability of the real thing happening.
Left 4 Dead is a short, awesome game. It’s probably not worth 60 bucks, but if you’re looking for an enormously fun multiplayer game, or you’re a big zombie fan, there’s not much better out there.
GameLemon (Feb 21, 2009)
The concept stage meeting at Turtle Rock Studios (currently part of the Valve Corporation) had probably involved more than just a few pints of beer and a dozen re-runs of Shaun of the Dead . Left 4 Dead's premise is as follows: three dudes and a chick blast through endless hordes of zombies. That's it. That's the story. And surprise, surprise, it works.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Nov 18, 2008)
Game Observer (May 09, 2009)
Can be considered a champion of the zombie-subculture, and one of the best co-operative experiences on the market, but the lack of content makes the game feel overpriced.
Gamekult (Nov 24, 2008)
Cardiaques s'abstenir...
GameDaily (Nov 18, 2008)
Shot-gunning hundreds of zombies and watching their heads and limbs explode rarely gets old, especially after a long day at work. Whether or not you should purchase the game, however, may depend on your platform of choice. PC users can snag it for less than $50, while Xbox 360 owners need to shell out $60 for a game that, while incredibly addictive, has a handful of options. So while it's short on content, Left 4 Dead's frantic blasting makes it one of the year's coolest horror games.
Giant Bomb (Nov 18, 2008)
Beyond its categorical success in establishing a vivid picture of the zombie apocalypse, Left 4 Dead's biggest breakthrough is the way it blurs the lines between the often compartmentalized pieces of a modern first-person shooter. It makes for a game that's unlike any other, and while the limited amount of content is admittedly unfortunate, that shouldn't keep you from experiencing this fast-paced, nerve-wracking game.

All up it's fun, looks pretty good and runs incredibly well - even on a low end system. It's also ludicrously light on content, with no real single player to speak of and very little multiplayer content. Compared to something like Call of Duty, for example, it's super light weight and yet it's the same price. If you're a multiplayer fiend and like the thought of mowing down zombies with chainguns, this is definitely worth checking out. The thrill of obliterating hordes of screaming bad guys that just want to gobble up your brains really is quite unique and fun. Just don't expect to be getting very good value for money because there's really not very much inside the box.
