Legend of Grimrock is in één woord fantastisch. Het spel is wel moeilijk en ik denk wel dat je een RPG-gamer van de oude stempel moet zijn, wil je de gameplay van Legend of Grimrock kunnen waarderen. Maar zoals ik al zei, Legend of Grimrock is ook voor deze groep spelers gemaakt en mijn review is ook op deze groep mensen gericht. Hoewel ik zeker wel enige kritiekpunten heb op de game, weet Legend of Grimrock wel dat oprechte oldschool gevoel op te roepen die mij met ongenadige overgave in de game trekt. De puzzels zitten echt heel knap in elkaar en grafisch is dit de mooiste old school dungeon crawler die je ooit gezien hebt. Ik kan dan ook niet om de dikke tien heen.

I have to give Almost Human a lot of credit. The level design, enemy placement, and especially the puzzles are all, by and large, wonderfully crafted. There are a few instances where the "traps" seem more unfair than clever, but that hardly tarnishes what is otherwise a terrific experience. You'll be hard-pressed to find a modern game like Legend of Grimrock any time soon, but with a game of this quality, you won't need one.

Beautiful, atmospheric and decisively old school dungeon crawl that does proper justice to the classics of the genre. Keeps the gameplay simple and logical, is suitably difficult and pulls no punches when you mess it up, yet you simply can't put it down. Recommended.

Legend of Grimrock n'est pas qu'un hommage à Dungeon Master ou un exutoire pour les nostalgiques d'une époque révolue. C'est surtout un dungeon crawler formidablement addictif, qui nous rappelle que les avancées technologiques ne sont pas le garant du plaisir de jeu. Beau, immersif, doté de combats exigeants, d'énigmes bien conçues et d'un level-design aux petits oignons, le titre de Almost Human est de surcroît doté d'une bonne durée de vie et d'une finition exemplaire. S'il fallait lui trouver un défaut, on évoquerait alors son classicisme : en prenant le parti de rester dans le giron du fondateur du genre, il se prive peut-être de la variété d'un Lands of Lore ou de l'inventivité d'un Stonekeep. Mais qu'importe, puisque le pari est aussi réussi qu'il était osé. Un achat obligatoire pour tout amateur du genre.

Per tutti gli amanti delle mappe disegnate a mano e per chi si sente orfano di un certo tipo di giochi, Legend of Legend of Grimrock è quindi letteralmente "manna dal cielo", un titolo come non se ne vedevano da tempo e capace di riportare alla mente le decine di notti in bianco persi all'interno di questo o di quel dungeon. Per tutti gli altri, tralasciando la scelta della modalità più difficile (forse troppo ostica per i palati attuali), il titolo di Almost Human potrebbe essere il viatico per il recupero di tutta una serie di capolavori che il tempo o l'incuranza non hanno permesso di fare propri nel momento della loro uscita.

Ihr wollt Old School? Bitteschön. Legend of Grimrock ist ein unfassbar wertvolles Geschenk an alle, die einfach mal wieder einen echten Dungeon Crawl hinter sich bringen wollen. Es ist so, als hätten FTL Games und Westwood Studios auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Schaffens ein gemeinsames Projekt in der Schublade vergessen und nun wurde es von Almost Human vollendet. Schrittweises Laufen mit 90-Grad-Drehungen, Pseudo-Echtzeitkämpfe, Magie und Alchemie, Mikromanagement und das Gefühl von null an die eigenen Charaktere von nackten Schwächlingen zu Helden zu entwickeln. All die Härten eines riesigen Dungeons sind auch vorhanden. Die Rätsel, die Fallen, die Monster. Spielt das hier nicht einfach nur. Genießt es.

Legend of Grimrock è un tuffo nel passato che non lascia indifferenti. Gli utenti più vecchi lo ameranno, ritrovandoci quel gusto per il gioco di ruolo classico andato ormai perduto, ma probabilmente piacerà anche a qualche giocatore moderno. Soprattutto agli insoddisfatti delle esperienze che offrono sfide ridicole e tutte uguali a prezzi astronomici. Giocandolo si sente la puzza di quegli stretti corridoi infestati da mostri di ogni tipo e si torna a percepire il fascino del dungeon inteso come un luogo pieno di segreti e pericoli, e non come uno dei tanti buchi in cui andare a far strage di mostri.

The game is a wonderful blend of mindbending puzzles, old school RPG combat and dungeon survival. If you’re a fan of RPGs in any way, shape or form, you owe it to yourself to give this game a shot, even if it’s just to see where RPGs got their start.
Your journey through Grimrock won’t ever end up in a tattered notebook in a box. But it provides the same kind of deep-seated satisfaction at having to work things out for yourself, that same sense of something tactile while exploring a virtual world. Mostly, it’s a wonderful reminder of a genre and style of play many thought we’d never see again.

If you’re an old school gamer that longs for a challenge the old fashioned way, look no further. If you’re a younger gamer intrigued by old video game genres that no longer exist, look no further. Grimrock will be a superb introduction to the genre. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

If you're looking for a few minutes of light, relaxing play to take your mind off a tough day at the office, you should probably stay as far away from this thing as humanly possible. But if you've spent the last 20 years wishing that somebody would pick up that torch and then hit you over the head with it, the news is good, because your prayers have been answered. Legend of Grimrock is the real deal. It is excellent - and it's about time!

It would be easy to dismiss Legend of Grimrock as little more than a first-person party-based RPG nostalgia trip. A group of adventurers. A dungeon. The promise of loot. Magic, monsters, and mayhem. You wouldn't know it by looking at the likes of Mass Effect 3, but in what seems like an age ago, this was all you needed in a roleplaying game. This adaptation of the old Dungeon Master formula (which dates back to 1987) shows that this sort of RPG can not only exist in the fancy-schmancy era of modern RPGS, but succeed as well.

Il dungeon crawling torna di prepotenza in chiave grid-based grazie a Legend of Grimrock, che fa dell'avventura il suo più grande punto di forza. Ciò che stupisce, cattura e appassiona chiunque si cimenterà nell'impresa di scoprire il segreto ultimo di Grimrock è la perfetta commistione tra esplorazione, astuzia e combattimento dell'esperienza intera. Momenti concitati di battaglia si alternano a passaggi in cui dovremo usare le meningi per procedere, mettendo assieme gli indizi dispersi nei dedali del dungeon, anche in frangenti molto distanti fra loro. Sarà meglio armarsi di pazienza in questi casi, magari tornando sui propri passi, controllando le rune iscritte a muro e ispezionando ogni dettaglio per capire a cosa si riferisce quella maledetta pergamena scritta in rima. I pochi difetti non ci impediscono quindi di premiare questo titolo: un'esperienza così oscura, misteriosa e appassionante che ogni singolo videogiocatore non deve assolutamente lasciarsi scappare.

The free moving battles and challenging monsters offer a level of difficulty that isn’t seen in a lot of today’s games, but at the same time the game never feels cheap. Careful strategy, clever use of your environment, and proper preparation will win most battles and give you a sense of accomplishment. The puzzles in the game are numerous and most require some thought, but there is always a clue to solving them if you look around and think hard enough.

Das ist ein sehr gutes Abenteuer alter Schule, das wohlige Erinnerungen an Dungeon Master weckt. Hier gibt es nicht nur Hack’n Slay in stimmungsvoller Kulisse, sondern viele clevere Rätsel, tolle Geheimnisse und tödliche Fallen hinter der nächsten Ecke. Legend of Grimrock es nicht als episches Rollenspiel, sondern als Hommage an Dungeon-Crawler gedacht ist. Trotzdem gebührt den Finnen für diese Reise in die Vergangenheit ein großes Lob, denn sie ist nicht nur ansehnlich, sondern versprüht genau jene labyrinthische Faszination unter Tage, die vielen modernen Abenteuern in ihren kilometerlangen Schläuchen der Langeweile abgeht. Auch wenn die Charaktererstellung etwas mager ist und die Fähigkeiten zu linear entwickelt werden: Das hat richtig Spaß gemacht, das war endlich mal wieder ein Dungeon!

Legend of Grimrock is not a combat-focused game, and even its combat is more puzzle-like than anything else. The focus is on atmosphere and brain-teasers, both of which the game pulls off with absolute aplomb and unbelievably slick production, to the point where one can almost smell the grime and mold on the dungeon's walls. It's a tense and enjoyable throwback to a type of game that seemed to have long since faded from view.

Évidemment, pour certains le jeu sera trop old school tandis que pour d'autres il ne le sera pas assez, mais Legend of Grimrock est plus qu'un hommage, c'est avant tout un très bon jeu. Cette sombre plongée dans les entrailles d'un donjon très hostile parvient à être vraiment immersive et addictive, malgré (ou grâce à?) sa difficulté parfois horripilante. Une véritable réussite.

Με μια ατμόσφαιρα που τσακίζει κόκκαλα, εθιστικό gameplay και αχαρτογράφητη εξερεύνηση σε μάχες και γρίφους, αποτελεί έναν τίτλο που θα συγκινήσει τους παλαιότερους και θα μαγέψει τους νεότερους. Underneath its gorgeous sheen and striking atmosphere, Legend of Grimrock is an unapologetic nod to PC gaming's earlier days. Playing it reawakens those same feelings of excitement I had back when I got into early dungeon crawler RPGs for the first time. There's something magical about the skillful way the dev team takes such antiquated game design and makes it feel new and fun again, pushing all the right nostalgia buttons in the process. But more importantly, everything about this well-crafted romp through deadly dungeons comes together to pull you into its mysterious realm and hold on.

Legend of Grimrock starts off a little ponderously, almost unwelcoming. Whereas its inspiration Eye of the Beholder treated the player to colourful red walls upon entering, Grimrock’s look more realistic and, as a result, a bit dull. The bestiary is a little less varied too and initially at least, there seems to be a lot less to do. In some ways, it is a reflection of the smaller scale of Legend of Grimrock; It simply is a lot smaller than the Eye of the Beholder games and a bit less ambitious too.

Heutzutage gibt’s zwar reichlich Remakes und Retro-Spiele, doch oft gelingt es denen nicht, das Spielgefühl „der guten alten Zeit“ einzufangen. Legend of Grimrock hingegen meistert diesen Anspruch mit Leichtigkeit: Wer einmal Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder oder Stonekeep gespielt hat, wird sich in Legend of Grimrock heimisch fühlen! Klar, genau diese veraltete Mechanik dürfte manche Spieler abstoßen, vor allem, wenn man eher ein Ego-Action-Spiel oder einen Fantasy-Shooter erwartet. Ich persönlich find’s jedoch toll, dass Almost Human da so konsequent altmodisch geblieben ist! Vor allem die knackigen Rätsel haben mir gut gefallen. Hin und wieder wurde es zwar ganz schön fordernd, doch dafür war dann mein Erfolgserlebnis bei der Lösung umso größer – Sie wissen schon, so wie damals, als Computerspiele noch keinen eingebauten Autopiloten hatten.

Am meisten begeistert mich, dass Legend of Grimrock seine Spieler ernst nimmt und als denkende Wesen behandelt - nicht als stumpfe Konsumenten. Zudem verbreitet der Dungeon Crawler auch ganz ohne Zwischensequenzen und aufgepfropfte Story eine herrlich intensive Atmosphäre. Allerdings ist er mitunter bockeschwer - wer seinen Fokus aufs Lösen der teilweise fantastischen Rätsel legen will, sollte unbedingt den leichten Schwierigkeitsgrad wählen. Etwas traurig bin ich lediglich darüber, dass man bei aller Dungeon-Master-Verbundenheit zwei wichtige Aspekte anders - wie ich finde schlechter - gelöst hat: Respawnende Gegner brauche ich ebenso wenig wie Falltüren, durch die man weder zaubern noch kämpfen kann. Ansonsten: Bitte Nachschub, und zwar möglichst bald.

Jednak to, co najważniejsze w tej pozycji, to jej niesamowity klimat staroszkolnych dzieł. Odkrywanie kolejnych kwadratów w trybie turowym, wymyślny model magii, brak bohaterów niezależnych (w tym kupców), koncentracja na zagadkach i eksploracji kosztem historii – to wszystko cechowało gry fabularne trzydzieści lat temu. I teraz dzięki Legend of Grimrock miłośnicy tego typu tytułów mogą znów poczuć tę niesamowitą magię wynikającą z poznawania kolejnych części podziemi i pokonywania niebezpieczeństw oraz rozwiązywania łamigłówek. I za to chłopakom z Almost Human Games należy się szacunek.

Whether you’re a fan of classic PC dungeon crawlers, looking to play one but can’t run any of the old games on your new PC, or just looking for something that’s different you won’t be disappointed with Legend of Grimrock. Almost Human have lovingly resurrected a dead genre and added just the right amount of modern elements. While the pace might not be quite what some gamers are looking for, there is a lot to love inside these bleak halls.

Legend of Grimrock är ett spel från den gamla skolan ut i fingerspetsarna, från start till slut. För gamla rävar som jag är titeln något som saknats i mitt liv under det senaste decenniet, och jag gillar denna titel skarpt. Dock kan jag se bristerna i spelmekaniken som är mycket förlegad och kan skapa en del irritation om du inte är van med de lite klumpiga kontrollerna samt spelets grundläggande premisser med korridorer och strider som med lätthet kan beskrivas som enformiga när du har fått kläm på situationen. Men har du överseende med ovanstående brister kommer spelet att växa på dig och ju längre ner i Mount Grimrock du kommer, desto roligare blir det. Legend of Grimrock bjuder på en hel del överraskningar för dig som ger det en chans.

Vaikka se on uskomaton nostalgiatrippi on sillä myös paljon annettavaa nykyiselle pelaajasukupolvelle. Ainoa asia mitä Grimrock jättää kaipaamaan on lisää samaa mutta enemmän ja monipuolisemmin!

Nu tænker du måske, at spillet kun er noget værd, hvis man har spillet de føromtalte spil i genren. Det er heldigvis ikke tilfældet. Jeg har før i tiden selv spillet nogle timers Eye of the Beholder, men det fangede mig aldrig på samme måde som Legend of Grimrock har gjort det. Har du mod på et spil, der bryder lidt med konventionerne i nyere spil ved at skæve tilbage til de gamle af slagsen, så vil jeg til hver en tid anbefale dette kærkomne gensyn med en for længst svunden tid i spilhistorien.

Legend of Grimrock tries to recreate to classic RPG and succeeds. The retro gameplay is an ironic breath of fresh air for the genre. A high challenge and rewarding leveling system makes each enemy kill worthwhile and addictive. Solving puzzles is just as satisfying as slaying ogres, but sometimes the difficulty can get the better of you with a particularly hard puzzle of fight. Overall Legend of Grimrock is an entertaining treat for classic gamers and RPG fanatics that dares to do something new (or rather, old) with the genre.

Almost Human ha realizado un notable trabajo desde el cariño y la tradición a un tipo de juegos que ya no se hacen, y sólo por eso ya merecen el aplauso, aunque lo cierto es que Grimrock tiene la suficiente calidad como para mantenerse por sus propios méritos y no necesitar del factor nostalgia. No es un juego para todo el mundo, requiere paciencia y una aproximación metódica con la que los jugadores más noveles quizás no estén acostumbrados a lidiar, pero es una gran experiencia si dejas que te atrape.

Legend of Grimrock tape très fort pile là où il visait : la vieille alchimie du Dungeon Crawling fonctionne dès les premières minutes de jeu. Et la qualité du gameplay, de l'ambiance et des énigmes pourrait bien dépasser le stade de la nostalgie. Il faut tout de même être prudent, cela reste un titre de niche, renseignez-vous correctement (en lisant ce test par exemple) avant de vous laisser séduire.

Ved å omfavne visse begrensninger skaper utviklerne en rollespillopplevelse man ikke kan få på noen andre måter. Og den rollespillopplevelsen er faktisk overraskende god – også i 2012. Resultatet er altså et underholdende og tilfredsstillende rollespill som byr på mange herlige timer med moro. Legend of Grimrock gjør strengt tatt ingenting som ikke Dungeon Master gjorde for godt over 20 år siden, men forhåpentligvis sikrer spillets store suksess så langt at utviklerne får mulighet til å ta konseptet videre i fremtiden. De lover også et nedlastbart grotteredigeringsverktøy, som kan gi spillet mye ekstra levetid.

In a way, The Legend of Grimrock is a lot like Dark Souls. The game rewards calculated, meticulous play and any severe injuries or deaths are likely a result of not taking in your surroundings. There are a lot of ways to die in Grimrock and if you’re not paying attention, taking the time to search out better gear and learn to craft potions, you’re going to have a difficult time with it. However, there’s a great feeling of accomplishment as you traverse each floor, defeating powerful monsters and figuring out puzzle solutions on your own.

Grimrock is hardcore with a vengeance, so be warned. It won't dole out puzzle hints; it won't tell you what your next objective is. Poison and other status effects will cripple your party, and the resources you find are limited. Heck, if you want you can even disable the auto-mapping, forcing you to resort to good ol' graph paper. It's difficult, and will not apologize for it.

All that said, this game costs 15 bucks. Given the level of intensity, the eminently satisfying challenge of the puzzles, and the surprising twists the story takes (not to mention the good loot!), it's fair to say that Grimrock offers more enjoyment than you'd have any right to expect given the low price point. If you're into the classic RPG motif, or if you just like a challenge that goes beyond crafting armor and performing endless fetch quests, Grimrock is worth your dime. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself up late one night, surrounded by empty pizza boxes, your face illuminated by the warm glow of your flatscreen, trying to figure out that darn lightning puzzle.

Legend of Grimrock will appeal to RPG fans and anyone who fancies a nostalgic dungeon crawler, just like they used to make ‘em. We’d have liked more level variety and the occasional control glitch was annoying, but this is a great way to while away the wee hours.

This Finnish indie PC project is a love letter to the titles from the ‘80s that made me the gamer I am today, like Wizardry, Might & Magic, and Dungeon Master. The developers hit their target of marrying old-school gameplay and puzzle solving with modern production values and UI conventions, but a few missteps in combat and puzzle design keep Legend of Grimrock from attaining the heights of the classics that inspired it.

Очевидно, что Legend of Grimrock создавалась с расчетом на тех, кто сутками просиживал в подземельях Eye of the Beholder и Dungeon Master. Но местами Almost Human спутали ретро-стилистику с устаревшими стандартами качества — по нынешним меркам в «Гримроке» слишком мало разнообразия.

Si quelques améliorations d'ergonomie ont été effectuées par rapport aux vieux Dungeon Crawlers de l'époque, Legend of Grimrock reste "old school" jusqu'au bout des ongles et déplaira donc fortement aux détracteurs du genre et de ses rigidités inhérentes. Attention donc, on pourrait critiquer le manque d'ambition du studio indépendant, proposant un hommage ou un retour aux sources à défaut d'une relecture moderne du genre, mais le titre d'Almost Human reste un Dungeon Crawler fort sympathique. Pas vilain graphiquement, prenant, doté d'un bon level design et de bonnes énigmes, il saura honorer ses ancêtres ou faire découvrir aux plus jeunes joueurs à quel point le genre peut être addictif.

On its own terms, Legend Of Grimrock is a success. It recreates its idol and drinks deep from a reservoir of nostalgic goodwill. It can’t have the same gobsmacking impact as its inspiration, but this is a simple, engaging and occasionally baffling journey in its own right, with plenty of hooks to snare the newcomer.

I found the first hour of LoG nostalgic, and the next hour tolerable, and the hours after that aggravating. The dungeon is bland and the enemies are flat and the combat interface is cumbersome – in others words, just like every RPG dungeon crawl in the 80’s. If you find the gameplay of modern RPGs like Skyrim too intimidating or overwhelming or whatever, and you can’t find copies of the older games or can’t seem to get them to run in Dosbox, then by all means, jump into LoG and have a good time.

The Finnish team at Almost Human has done a remarkable job of capturing the atmosphere and gameplay that made computer RPGs of the ‘80s and ‘90s so wondrous to sink time into, but even if you prefer that style of game to modern releases, it comes with some baggage.

Vaak sta je plots oog in oog met gigantische slakken, reusachtige spinnen, imposante skeletkrijgers en woeste ogres. Tel daarbij de vele puzzels, gesloten deuren en valstrikken en de moderne 3D-graphics die de dungeons er doen uitzien zoals we ze 20 jaar geleden moesten fantaseren en je hebt een game die door geen enkele dungeon crawler liefhebber mag worden gemist.
