The best adventure game in years. That's one of the easier ways to describe The Longest Journey. It's also the longest, the most rewarding and the most mature. Leaving behind the cartoon-like worlds and sentimentality that so many adventures games inhabit, the themes of the game are those of self-discovery, personal interactions and ends-justify-the-means world saving. The graphics are astounding, the voice work is remarkably talented and the story arc is tight, carrying the player along with perfect timing. With nods to the great games of yesteryear and an interface that perfects the genre's style, The Longest Journey is easily one of the top three adventure games of all time, standing next to Sierra and LucasArts' legendary titles with class and dignity.
Electric Games (Jan 08, 2001)
The Longest Journey is one of the best adventure games I've played since 1998's Blade Runner. These types of games are so rare nowadays that it's a true gem that comes along and proves that the genre is still alive and kicking. However, it is not the absence of such games that makes this one special. If the market were flooded with adventure games, this one would still stand head and shoulders above the rest. Thanks, Funcom, for proving that this is still a valid and entertaining form of gaming. Bottom Line: Excellent story, elegant interface, and superior graphics make this the best adventure game to arrive on store shelves in quite some time. Adventure fans will really appreciate the level of detail in storytelling. The only downside to the game is the size of install necessary to make it run properly, but it's well worth it for a game this good.
To conclude, it can be said without hesitation that The Longest Journey is among the best and most beautiful adventure games ever made. What makes this game really special is the fact that it is made to be experienced and remembered like a great book. The suspense and the curiosity it raises are captivating.
To further enhance this credibility, The Longest Journey is the only adventure game I can remember in which some of the main characters perish. Most important of all, though, no matter what choices you make, right or wrong, April cannot die, so the gameplay is never fractured by forcing you to frustratingly replay difficult sections. Thus, your last save never becomes an important issue. Some of the early chapters even allow April to choose her path--should I work overtime or stay home and rest? While her decisions affect the conclusion of these chapters, they do not alter the ultimate path of the story. Still, how many games have you ever played where your choices actually matter?

The Longest Journey brings me back to those days gone by when we used to gather around a 7 inch monochrome computer screen and spar with a text parser engine, playing Microsoft adventure and Zork (text only games). There are no similarities here save one: TLJ has all the magic and wished-for fantasy that was fresh and exciting back when we relied on our imaginations to visualize worlds and the characters that populated them. TLJ is fresh right down to the smallest detail, captivating the player in a world that is paradoxically realistic and fantastical at the same time. April is any teenager, or anyone's daughter. She is wisecracking and sassy, yet vulnerable. She puts on a brave front, yet one senses early in the game that she carries hurt and loss from her childhood days.

Meet April Ryan: Student of the Future. She's a penniless painter shacking up in Newport's Venice District, prepping for her big student art exhibition, spending her off-hours chatting with Robocops wearing cybernetically enhanced exoskeletons. April Ryan, as it turns out, is also a Shifter - a human granted the ability to open glowing blue rifts in time-space that lead to the world of Arcadia, a surreal fantasy universe populated by glowing silver dragons, talking trees, and creatures who exist simultaneously in the past, present, and future.
Easily one of the better adventure games published, bringing together good puzzles, graphics, and story. Some gamers may find the opening few chapters a bit slow, however.

The sad fact that I didn’t get around to playing each and every adventure on earth and therefore cannot tell whether there is another jewel like this is the only reason for me not to award the full 100%. Those who know me might ascribe my (next to) unbridled enthusiasm for ‘The Longest Journey’ to my professional relation to Norway (although the game doesn’t have anything to do with this beautiful country apart from some more or less obvious allusions and the fact that it has been developed by Norwegians). The truth is that this wonderful adventure crossed my path at a time when what I needed badly was diversion and TLJ managed to put me under its spell and let me forget everything around me like few others did ever since.

After experiencing night after night of horrifying nightmares, you realize that you are the only person who can save the all-important balance between two very different worlds by shifting between them. The free world rests on your ability to figure out exactly what this balance is and how to save it before the evil overlords take control. Are you up to the challenge?
Game Over Online (May 12, 2000)
For a game to truly involve me and addict me with its story and ingenuity it must exhibit the rare quality of incredible story telling. The Longest Journey begins as a small, little-known game and develops into a full-fledged epic with truly realistic characters to whom you will find yourself relating. There are minor flaws, and they can sometimes be a hindrance, but not enough to stop The Longest Journey from being one of the best games I've ever played, and definitely my choice so far for game of the year. Some may disagree and some may agree, but that is the nature of the world and, as The Longest Journey professes, ultimately, this duality is one and the same, so get off your ass and get this game!
Adventure Lantern (Jul, 2006)
In conclusion, The Longest Journey is a classic adventure game true adventurers should not miss. It’s one of the greatest stories ever told, including amazing (and very different!) characters and locations. Don’t let the long conversations scare you – if you like storytelling, this game’s for you.
IGN (Nov 20, 2000)
Months and months after its European release, The Longest Journey is finally making it to America -- and not a second too soon, either. Just in time for the Holiday season, this is a perfect gift, and one of the most polished adventure titles ever made. Like critical faves like Grim Fandango, this game does more than just recreate the nostalgic experience of old school adventure gaming, it actually reinvents how stories can be told in the medium, and gives us a glimpse of what we can expect in the years to come.
GameSpot (Jun 26, 2000)
The Longest Journey is one of the best adventure games in years. Like a hybrid of classic Sierra and LucasArts games, it tells a great fairy tale filled with characters that you'll remember long after the game is over.
GameSpy (Aug 01, 2000)
The Longest Journey has a way of playing with your emotions. As I played, I experienced joy, sorrow, hatred, fear, and an almost spiritual feeling. The powerful story affects you as it unfolds and by the end you will be drained--your life will never be the same again. This game could do to adventure games, what Doom did for the FPS. A must buy for anyone and everyone.

The Longest Journey on suorastaan erinomainen seikkailupeli, siinä on kaikki, mitä tämän tyyppiseltä peliltä voikin vaatia. Juoni on erinomainen ja mukaansatempaava, pelattavuus kohdallaan, grafiikat kauniita ja ennen kaikkea pelin tunnelma on hyvin vahva. Ehkä jotain pieniä kauneusvirheitä löytyy sieltä täältä, mutta niitä hädintuskin huomaa.
Game Revolution (Mar 01, 2001)
The Longest Journey is a masterful adventure game. Although not incredibly impressive technologically, it encapsulates all the elements of a good adventure and is an absolute must-have for any adventure gamers out there.
Gry OnLine (Mar 20, 2001)
Czas podsumować to wszystko, co napisałem wcześniej. “The Longest Journey” zawiera w sobie to wszystko, co powinna posiadać idealna gra przygodowa. A przynajmniej wśród gier przygodowych.
Once in a while, you’ll come across a title so beautifully rendered, well-executed and fun to play that the memory of it will stick with you for years to come. These are the System Shocks, the Half-Lifes and the Myths of the world…and now, The Longest Journey can be added to the list. It is utterly rife with quality in all areas, as the graphics, sound, music and gameplay all mesh in near-perfect unison to create one of the single most immersive and addictive adventure offerings, ever. It manages to be serious yet playful at all times, capturing your rapt attention as a gamer while calling to your joyful spirit. As cliché as this statement may be, The Longest Journey unquestionably transcends its digital medium to become not merely a game, but an experience.
GamesCollection (Feb 07, 2011)
The excellent storyline, medley of interesting characters, well-written dialogue, challenging puzzles. and wonderfully cinematic musical score will leave an impression on you for quite some time, And perhaps best of all, the game’s graphics are absolutely stunning; without a doubt, this is some of the best artwork I have ever seen in a game. As is true in all the best games, it’s quite clear that the designers, artists, musicians. and programmers of THE LONGEST JOURNEY poured their hearts and souls into this game, and what emerges is not just a great game but a work of art.
90 (UK) (Jun 22, 2000)
At the end of the day though, The Longest Journey is an engrossing and highly entertaining adventure game with characters that you can care about, an involving storyline to keep you hooked, and settings and characters that are both beautiful and bizarre. What more could you want from an adventure game?
Absolute Games ( (May 10, 2000)

Adventure Gamers (May 20, 2000)
The Longest Journey feels like a breath of fresh air among the Myst-style games of recent days. I have decided to award this masterpiece with our highest score. Having said that, I really hope Funcom won't leave it with this. I think I am getting withdrawal symptoms…
PC Gamer (2000)
Bearing in mind that the title's been out in Europe for over a year, American publishers should be ashamed of their treatment of this genre. This Norwegian import betters 99% of the market's "typical" adventure games, what precious few there are. Now that Funcom's baby has arrived, load it up and dive once more into the joys of a brilliantly constructed adventure game. And god help anyone that tries to peel you away from the keyboard.
This is hands down the best adventure game currently on the market. It overcomes its minor flaws with a sheer beauty that simply can't be matched. It earns a near-perfect 4 1/2 GiN Gem score, and will have you spending many long nights with April (in her underwear sometimes as a bonus) working your way though the 4 CD-ROMs that contain the game.
At a time when many game publishers run screaming from the word "adventure," Funcom has embraced all that is good about the genre and created an exceptional game experience. If you are not a fan of story-based adventures, then it is not likely you will take joy in The Longest Journey. However, for those who would rather explore than shoot, this game is cause for celebration.
Svenska PC Gamer (Jan, 2000)
ActionTrip (May 13, 2000)
It remains to be seen how the market will treat The Longest Journey. It would be a real shame if it ended up as unnoticed as Grim Fandango. TLJ defiantly doesn't deserve a fate like that. Well, if you are an adventure player... you know what to do !
The Longest Journey is definitely not the kind of game everyone will appreciate and, in fact, may be unplayable after five minutes for some gamers. However, for anyone willing to give it half a chance, the game can provide the same kind of enthralling entertainment as the most meticulously crafted mystery novel or film, perhaps even rekindling a lost sense of wonder in the way reality really works.
Nerikes Allehanda (Mar 10, 2000)
Game Chronicles (Jan 27, 2001)
Adventure has always been my favorite gaming genre. I can remember back in the early 80's long before I could ever afford my own computer, I would hang out at the local Radio Shack and play Zork: The Great Underground Empire on the TRS-80 they had setup in the store. Infocom text adventures would carry me through until 1985 when I played my first graphical adventure; Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. I was hooked, and immediately became addicted to every adventure game that Sierra Online released.
Games Finder (Sep 13, 2014)
With a huge number of locations, impressive character development and unique setting The Longest Journey is the definition of adventure game and definitely not a game to be missed by adventure fans.
Gameplanet (Oct 16, 2000)
WITH THE PC GAMING industry still obsessed with violent first person shooters it's refreshing to go back to games which are considered "old school". The Longest Journey is an ambitious point and click adventure game from Norwegian company Funcom which pits you in the role of April Ryan. The game is set 100 years from now and takes you on a "long journey" from your local neighbourhood of Newport to a fantasy world know as Arcadia.
