I think just about anyone would get a kick out of playing this, from both hardcore players to the casual gamer. With secrets hidden around every corner, and a truly deep system that provides endless amounts of experimentation and visual pop, I can’t see someone not liking the game. Unless they don’t like pop culture, or a really interesting game. Interestingly enough, while most people would call Magicka an RPG, I would actually have to disagree. It stands out in its own, relatively unique, category of games. That is perhaps the best thing I could say about it. Magicka is a category unto itself.
Calm Down Tom (Mar 10, 2011)
Tom, the other world peddler of strange games came up good this time, though the damn monkey paw is defective. At the small price Magicka is being sold for I think anyone would be mad to miss it. I would score the game an 8 if it was at the price of the usual releases, but for the price of a cinema ticket Magicka is a bargain and most definitely worth the praise it’s receiving.
GameZebo (May 02, 2011)
I love Magicka the way a fat kid loves cake. I adore it completely, see my addiction with some guilt and know for a fact that it will inevitably get me killed. Of course, unlike diabetes, death in Magicka tends to happen with greater frequency and more hilarity. Best played with four people and easier completed with two, Arrowhead Studio's action-adventure is the textbook definition of the phrase 'Hell is Other People'.
Brash Games (Jan 28, 2011)
I know the developers are working hard on bug fixes - I still really love this game. It’s fun and immersing and well worth the pittance Steam are asking for. I’m not going to give it full marks, due to the bugs. But instead, a very respectable nine out of ten. Get your robe on and get out there.
Gamereactor (Finland) (Feb 10, 2011)
Magicka may seem like a simple game, but it’s just so much fun that you can’t help wasting a good couple of hours cooking up various spell combos. For some light-hearted humor and dazzling spellcraft, pick up a copy and dive in!
CPU Gamer (May 06, 2011)
Magicka is a rare gem in a world filled with boring FPS games that use the same recycled storyline and formula, and the Vietnam DLC is there to extend the fun. Whether you'll be playing it solo or, better yet, with a group of budding magic slingers, Magicka will please gamers of all ages. For such a low price, its hard not to give praise to this truly great game and its pint sized DLC. It bombards you with its humor, numerous pop culture references, and its unique gameplay style that many have fallen in love with since its release. If you're quite partial to roasting some goblins with fire or zapping tree people with lightning, go out and get Magicka. You will not be disappointed…
Game Chronicles (Feb 05, 2011)
Despite the relatively small flaws, however, Magicka is one of those games that deserves to become a classic. Despite a rough launch and initial problems with multiplayer over the first week or so, Magicka’s recovered well and is now one of the most refreshing, engaging, hilarious games I’ve played in a long time, and its frequent patching is to Arrowhead and Paradox’s credit. Anyone who has any interest in cooperative games or action-adventure would do well to pick it up, especially for the almost ridiculous price of $10.

DarkZero (Mar 01, 2011)
It’s hugely refreshing to see a magic-focused game that actually relies on player skill instead of numbers and pre-determined spells. Success in Magicka is determined by your own ingenuity, and not because you pissed away several evenings grinding for experience points or a rare item. People have complained that Magicka is too complex or confusing, but they’re missing the point. It’s a game about wielding immense power, but having to be clever to use it properly. When you get it wrong, you’ll laugh. When you get it right, you’ll feel like a god. Either way, you are going to enjoy yourself, whether you like it or not.
Mana Pool (Jan 31, 2011)
Magicka might not be the most technologically ground-breaking game that has come out in the past years, or even be close to contending for that title – but it does something a lot of other games forget these days. It provides players with the core essence of gaming: FUN. If it wasn’t for a few technical glitches and a few imperfections, this game could easily have scored full marks. Given that the developers fully intend to support this game and add more content to it, this game is pure spellcasting fun at it’s finest and you can absolutely not afford to give it a miss. It’s highly recommended to play this game in multiplayer co-op – especially in challenge mode, so after you’ve finished the Adventure mode be sure to try that.
YouGamers (Feb 04, 2011)
Fresh and fun isometric story-driven monster bash where you can actually improvise and cast spells by combining raw elements instead of mashing numeric keys for canned results. Fun even alone and hilarious chaos in up to four player co-op.
Game Watcher (Feb 07, 2011)
The fact that, at the time of writing, Magicka had surpassed 150,000 sales, is just a testament to how fun and addictive the core game really is. Now that most of the major hiccups out of the way, this is definitely a must-buy game, but it really needs to be experienced to get how much fun it is. We hope Paradox also learns a lesson with this as far as QA is concerned - although the game did have a beta, which is the odd thing. Anyway, buy it, grab some friends and get your robes ready!
GameTrailers (Feb 02, 2011)
It was particularly bad for us just after launch, but we've been able to play without encountering any serious problems following the first big patch. As always in these situations, your mileage may vary. The flurry of patches however, coming almost daily, suggests the developers are busy working out the kinks. With its $9.99 price tag, it may be worth taking the gamble either way. Magicka's clever inspired twists on the straight action RPG are sure to result in hours of free-form chaotic fun.
Gamers Daily News (Jan 28, 2011)
This is a strong GDN silver award. Aside from some bugs that they’re squashing and some gameplay mechanics that feel clunky this is a fantastic game. It narrowly missed a gold medal and a 9.0. I think being able to quit at checkpoints would have nabbed that score.
Hooked Gamers (Jan 31, 2011)
There are people that found Magicka to be bug-ridden and there are indeed a few items on the ‘to do’ list. The developers have vowed to work around the clock to churn out as many patches as they have to and smoothen out the experience as diligently as possible. It’s very playable as it is though and the price is an absolute steal: these will be the best 10 bucks you could ever spend this month.

Legendra (Mar 06, 2011)
Ironhammers (Feb 03, 2011)
With any technical issues fixed and the controls becoming easier to work with over time, Magicka is ultimately left to leak its charm upon players with very little to complain about. Here’s an amazing title, with a new and distinct game mechanic at its heart — and it all comes delivered to your hard drive at a very great price. Magicka justifies its features and simplicity by poking fun at itself, and the genre that its based upon. You’ll be laughing at the dialogue, gasping throughout the difficult boss battles and occasionally cursing when you set yourself alight when you meant to heal.

Do you like your games to be tightly-designed experiences with engrossing stories? Well... you may not like Magicka. If, on the other hand, you like games that just ooze fun while basically forgetting everything else, this one will make your day.
Magicka earns high marks for doing something different, and for the most part doing it quite well. A couple little tweaks here and there, particularly in the difficulty department, and we might even have a candidate for a casual Game of the Year. Even now, it’s a fun and funny game that is more than worth the low price.
games xtreme (Apr 11, 2011)
If you have a few quid burning a hole in your pocket and a steam account you can do much worse than getting this game, provided you are the type that can cope with the interface. If you can (and it is not that bad, really) then this is a fun, lightweight without being casual, game that will make you spend your time looking for the hidden extras and hunting for the puns. Enjoy!
80 (UK) (Feb 24, 2011)
It's hugely disappointing that this astounding game should be so crapulent at launch; it has the best magic system we've experienced, Pratchett-esque wit and immense variety. The arena mode alone is perfect fun, in a Team Fortress way, though it's crying out for PvP. It's long, it's tough, it's huge fun, and it's cheap. But it will never be perfect.

When I reviewed Stalin vs. Martians more than a year ago, I lamented that such a lousy game was the closest thing the game industry had to a humorous item that year (or at least, one that I got to play). I’m happy to say that Magicka fits the bill, being both funny and a solid game. It’s too bad a buggy release has marred it, because it would otherwise have been a shoo-in for the Seal of Excellence. Priced at $9.99 on Gamersgate, Magicka is a wonderful and well designed game being offered at a casual-game price. If you have the urge to do some serious spellcasting, pick up a copy…after the next patch.
GamePro (US) (Feb 09, 2011)
You should come for the elemental goodness, and then stay for a clever story. Nearly every screen hides clever references and Arrowhead Studios manages to stay on the right side of cute, rather than beat you over the head with geek culture. Your silent, sword and staff wielding, bathrobe-clad protagonists don't just fight and look stylish -- they manage to actively drive the action forward thanks to their muteness. Sure, some other wizards could simply have told the all-powerful Death about the crisis and how he could have helped, but then you wouldn't get to fight him and play a few more stages due to fallout from the battle. Magicka won't rank up top with Portal or Monkey Island on anyone's "Best Written Games" list, but the dialogue is well worth listening to at least once. Thanks to a plethora of patches, Magicka is now stable so you can have fun without the frustration. Just one chapter with some of your friends is well worth the $10 cost.
Resolution Magazine (Feb 08, 2011)
While some troubleshooting niggles still remain, Magicka has thankfully been patched to be the title it should have been on release. Enjoyed best with friends (it’s a shame there’s no AI-support for those that want to enjoy the story alone), Magicka offers a unique experience that’s ripe with novel concepts and interesting mechanics. Blending new with old, it’s a remarkable little game for a first outing. The English voice acting might be a big stiff and on occasion, it can prompt you to wildly curse profanity at your monitor, but overall it’s a game that’s well worth a look. Stripped to the bone of RPG inaccessibility (character development, expansive plot, overwhelming loot), it’s the perfect game to jump in and enjoy from the get go.
Spazio Games (Feb 05, 2011)
gamrReview (Feb 14, 2011)
Sometimes we get so lost in the massive budget blockbusters that we forget the little guys. Magicka is a game made by 8 Swedish students and sold on Steam for $10. It may not be a blockbuster, but it is a fun and engaging little game. It's easy to pick up, hilariously tongue-in-cheek, and cleverly designed for crazy co-op antics. Magicka has its share of problems, but the fun far outweighs the frustration.
Girl Gamers UK (Feb 14, 2011)
It could perhaps be suggested that Magicka was released too early and shipped with far too many bugs. It could also be said that Magicka is an average fantasy action game that is saved only by the amazingly fun multiplayer and the involving magic system. But once in the thick of a co-op game with friends, magic spells flying all across the screen and all manner of strange things happening, Magicka is brilliant. The game has a chaos around it that allows novices to enjoy it just as much as professionals. Gamers looking for some chaotic co-op fun, that is perhaps a little different to the usual gaming fare, should certainly check this out. And watch your back, your friends don’t really know what they are doing either.
75 (Feb 17, 2011)
GamingBolt (Feb 14, 2011)
Magicka is a gem- it has its rough edges, sure, and its quirks, but what matters truly is the experience that awaits you if you look past all of those. True, there were a lot of bugs upon launch, but those have constantly been worked upon. True, the game’s focus on story is minimal, but it’s probably all the better for that. True, the game can often get cluttered and frustrating, but you’ve got to take it as it comes. The long and short of it is, if there was ever a game that deserved and demanded your full attention, Magicka is it. Get this game today- at $10, it won’t set you back much, and what you’ll have on your hands will be a whimsical, fun game that’s a blast to play through.
The A.V. Club (Feb 07, 2011)
This is the sad paradox of Magicka: what makes it so compelling as a game isn’t the finished product. Want to play online? Finding a game is hard enough without the lag. Want to play single-player? It’s balanced for multiplayer. The spell combinations and effects are fantastic, but they require a powerful video card, and there’s a notable lack of options for tweaking performance. Arrowhead Studios came up with a marvelous game, but the company’s excitement in rushing it to the market often creates more problems than they’re worth.
Armchair Empire, The (Feb 26, 2011)
Despite some imbalances in the game's spells, and certain aspects of the game's difficulty being exploitable, there's still a lot to like about Magicka. The experimentation is heaps of fun just to see the results, and this becomes even more entertaining in multi-player. There's even a challenge mode, and the option for some PvP when players have had enough of the main story. Players looking for a fun little satirical romp through a fantasy setting would do well to give Magicka a spin.
75 (Feb 23, 2011)
Ultimately, I can only recommend Magicka. At 10 euro it’s a good offer and the closest thing to PC Mortal Kombat; sporting spells, monsters and Scandinavian heroes, but with that drive to learn combos and experiment. Thus, Magicka is the best way to prove that a mage robe isn’t a bathrobe and the pointy hat isn’t a sleeping hat. And perhaps that Vlad isn’t a vampire...
RealGamer (Feb 09, 2011)
Magicka may have its problems such as certain areas being overlooked, but it does undoubtedly provide an enjoyable experience. Mainly due to its interesting spell system, just proving that not all good games are hyped up months before they arrive.
Game Informer Magazine (Feb 01, 2011)
All of that level design stupidity can't stop Magicka's brilliant core gameplay from shining through, though. At its best, with a buddy flinging spells beside you as the two of you tear hordes of enemies limb from limb, it's Double Dragon on a flaming helicopter flying through a tornado with a pilot on his fiftieth cup of coffee. That doesn't excuse the bits that are best compared to Battletoads' legendarily frustrating hoverbike sequence, but I'm not going to pretend like I didn't get my $10 and more out of the game.
GameZone (Feb 02, 2011)
Though it has some hurdles to overcome, some bugs to exterminate, and a fairly inconvenient control scheme, Magicka is a thoroughly charming and entertaining tongue in cheek adventure.
Meristation (Feb 01, 2011)
Cheat Happens (May 16, 2011)
Even with all of the patches and updates though, Magicka still tends to have the occasional lockup; if you can deal with restarting your system every now and then, and have the buddies to play with, Magicka is a great way to spend a weekend, just don't expect too much more from it.
Level (Sweden) (Mar, 2011)
I feel like I have to take the bugs into account when giving out my final grade, with the caveat that in a few weeks time it might be a lot more stable. If the game had been running as smooth as intended, if every loading screen wasn't a nail-biting experience, Magicka would have scored higher. It is still a hilarious, wonderful gem of a game.
Inside Gaming (Feb 08, 2011)
Magicka has a lot to offer: A highly customizable magic system, light-hearted comedy that will please videogame and sci-fi fans (at least for a bit), and a multiplayer mode that is all about the action. The game’s not perfect though: a bevy of bugs, a forgettable story, and a severe learning curve for the controls hold it back. Even with its flaws, Magicka is fun and fresh, and offers a new experience for RPG fans.
Gamekult (Feb 15, 2011)
Bit-Tech (Feb 02, 2011)
There's no denying that Magicka can be an effort in frustration at times, but its charming satire and colourful art style make it easy to persevere with the game. You can’t help but develop a soft spot for a game that allows you to wield an M60 machine gun in a fantasy setting. It's just a shame that you need to be a 12-fingered ninja with a gamepad and lots of friends to get the most out it.
ripten (Feb 08, 2011)
In conclusion, Magicka isn’t a bad game by any means, but it does have some major flaws that detract from what could otherwise be an extremely refreshing and exciting series. With a bit of polish and some simple reworks, Magicka 2 is almost a must do for Arrowhead Game Studios.
Magicka is well worth the price, despite its faults with the element input bar, the funky camera and the random crashes. But what really adds value is the ability to play co-operatively with friends (or even just random strangers on the internet). It’s a game tailored towards that sort of market and there’s so much fun to be had that really, you’d be silly not to play with other people. Long live co-op gameplay.
70 (Feb 04, 2011)
Magicka is a very fun game to play and I recommend it just for the single player alone. The graphics, the sound, and the storyline are great, but what will keep you coming back for more are the spells. Practicing and casting the thousands of spells possible will take a while, and you will want to figure out all of the great spells, and see the awesome effects they have. You will have fun going through the single player campaign; there is no doubt about that. I really hope though that the online portion of this game can be fixed so that everyone can access it. As fun as the single player mode is, I can only imagine how much fun the multiplayer experience could be. If they get this fixed, Magicka could possibly be one of the best games of 2011, and I would have given it a higher rating if it was working. For now though I will continue to enjoy the Single player campaign.
GameSpot (Feb 01, 2011)
Magicka is a hard game to recommend without reservation. But even though the technical issues get in the way right now, you can almost ignore these problems due to the sheer fun of hammering out spells on the keyboard in the goofball campaign. Paradox also seems dedicated to fixing the glitches. Updates are installed just about every time you fire up the game, so hopefully, it will be running smoothly in the near future. If you can exercise a little patience with the bugs, you'd do well to try out this innovative, exuberant RPG.
70 (Feb 09, 2011)
IGN (Jan 28, 2011)
Playing Magicka isn't about going through the motions with a control scheme you've used a thousand times before. It requires some reflex training that can reward you with wildly entertaining success on the field of battle. Unfortunately, Arrowhead's game is in need of patching at the time of this review, and bugs, crashes and connectivity issues occur with regularity. Even so, with a level-headed team of four, Magicka's cooperative action is entrancing chaos. It's rare for a game to feel this mechanically satisfying.
GameZ (Feb 27, 2011)

Get it working, and it’s great. For £8, you’ll get your money’s worth before everyone forgets about it. But it could have been game of the year material! Silly wizards.

There is a lot of game here for just $10. That still does not excuse the poor state in which the game shipped. For many gamers, it’s less about the cash as it is about the wasted time. If you’re a gamer who plays everything under the sun you likely have at least some disposable income, so while the $10 price point is great and everyone loves to save some money, wasting hours of time playing a game – any game – only for it to crash at the worst possible moment, is reason enough to shelve it and find something else to divert attention away from the chores of daily life. To be fair, Paradox and Arrowhead are doing a lot of work to fix the game’s issues and it is, as of this writing, in a far better state than when it shipped, but the fact remains that my group has suffered crashes at the end of three separate chapters, which forces a complete chapter redo, and as cute as Magicka is, that’s not funny.

Sure buggy game releases are nothing new, and with the numerous combinations of hardware out there, it comes as no surprise that “0 day” patches have become an industry standard. Magicka is no stranger to random crashes and disconnections, but when it is stable there is definitely a lot of fun to be had with the game’s surprisingly lengthy 13 levels. And thankfully the daily bug fixes and patches seem to be making the game more playable with each passing day.
Magicka is a game filled with such good writing and creative features that it is utterly bewildering that something as simple as moving and progressing through the levels is frustrating beyond all belief. At first I thought it was something that I could get over -- simply cast aside -- because the rest of the game is so enjoyable. However, as I kept playing, the amount of fun I was having decreased as I progressed until the point of manic-induced frustration. By the end I wanted nothing more to do with it. Turns out the positives don't outweigh the negatives. No amount of Star Wars references will ever change that.
Game Over Online (Feb 01, 2011)
Overall, I was not a fan of Magicka, even at its modest price. The game looks and sounds good enough, and it even has some funny scenes (including a vampire who keeps insisting he's not a vampire, and lots of fake-ish Swedish dialogue), but the actual gameplay was just too punishing for me. My fingers aren't nimble enough to spam things like FQFFQFFQ and FDFQDF over and over again, and the lesser (and shorter) spells I tried eventually limited how far I could go. Somehow Magicka won a Game of the Year award in Sweden in 2008, so at least some people out there like it, but not me. I got Magicka'd out in a hurry.

Gaming Nexus (Mar 10, 2011)
Magicka is initially entertaining and innovative, but its longevity is questionable at best. I certainly see no reason to make another run at the game, which for an action-RPG is quite unusual. Without a selection of classes or advancement paths, the first time through was simply enough for me. Added to the almost tiring amount of keyboarding required to effectively cast spells, I quickly found myself yearning for a simpler, more elegant action-RPG. I do approve and encourage innovative approaches, which Magicka certainly has. However, it just wasn't enough to win me over for good.

Game Arena (Feb 02, 2011)
I am 100% behind any developer who takes a risk and makes something innovative instead of following the same old format. Even though it isn’t possible mathematically, I am 200% behind a small studio who has the guts to do it. I started Magicka over from the beginning six times in my attempt to give it the best possible chance I could. In the end though, I can’t possibly suggest anyone spend any money on a game released in such a broken state, whether it’s ten dollars or ten cents.
