Description

Major Stryker is another of Apogee's attempts to make a commercial-level shareware game. It's a rather typical shoot-'em-up vertical scroller with EGA graphics.

The player fights through waves of Kreton alien enemies to reach the end of each level, with hostages to rescue along the way. The ship’s weapons consists of beam projectiles (which can be upgraded six times, but is reverted to level one if hit), and limited zap bombs, which clear the screen. There are also various power-ups in the form of letters and temporary shields. After every two levels, the player fights a Kreton boss, which has a certain weak point to shoot multiple times.

Good times...good times.

The Good
This is one of the games I grew up with. From the very start, you get placed right in the middle of the action. It just has that...retro feel. The music is awesome, I loved every bit of the title track! It's also always so much fun to get powerups and become an unstoppable death machine.

The Bad
Well, it's really hard in some parts. You never know what's around the corner. There are also loads of enemies on screen at a time, so good reflexes are a must.

The Bottom Line
An early shooter not quite up to the excellence of Raptor, but still great.

Trivia

Freeware release

Apogee released Major Stryker as freeware (without support) March 14th, 2006. The registered set can be downloaded at ftp://ftp.3drealms.com/freeware/strykerfw.zip.

Music

The first real appearance of the familiar "Apogee theme song" was in the game Major Stryker.

References

  • The hero, Harrison Stryker, is related to Duke Nukem, another character from Apogee games.
  • Several references to the movie Aliens are made in this game. Like the high score list is stocked by default with names of characters of this movie. And the line "Game over man" what the player will hear when he loses all his lives, is a direct lift from the same movie.
