The first sentence uttered in Mars: War Logs' opening cutscene doesn't make sense, but for that and its hundreds of other errors, War Logs is a miraculously un-frustrating game. I never threw a fit while playing it (although I threw a few swears during the tougher fights), and I never pleaded for it to end. No doubt its modest length has something to do with that, and the side quests and choices make the game longer for those who want it. Mars: War Logs is derivative, underdeveloped, and features one of the briefest, most rushed final chapters I've seen, but it's also completely playable and even charming in a B-movie kind of way.

Mars: War Logs certainly has its fair share of problems. The core mechanics of the game, including the combat system, are almost there, but the game needs more variety, both in the setting and the missions, and better interaction between the characters. However, as a budget action RPG, it is not a bad little romp and will keep the player entertained for the 12 or so hours it lasts. It will be interesting to see how the game fares when it arrives on the home consoles, and if Spiders make any changes between now and then. Check it out if action RPGs are your genre of choice.

I had been hoping (and kind of expecting from the trailer) for a sort of Arkham City combat structure in the form of a more classical RPG. This is not that game. The melee combat engine, while interesting, doesn’t actually balance well, and it results in combat that feels ridiculous and clunky where Arkham was fluid and dynamic. The scrap armor and weapon upgrade system likewise is interesting, but is often hampered by poor menu design choices. Then nine or ten hours after you’ve begun, it’s over, and you can go on with your life wondering why so many pretty good ideas overall turned out pretty badly.

Mars: War Logs is worth a go as long as you understand out of the gate it’s not a triple -A -title. But as a gamer, a true gamer, you may just find yourself some entertainment here.

Ambitionen sind was Feines.

As a whole, Mars: War Logs is a game well worth checking out for RPG fans and, at only twenty dollars, there’s no reason not to. Although frustrating at times, the developers’ ambition puts it above other indie RPGs which seem happy to settle for less considering their price. With a slightly bigger budget, Mars: War Logs could have been a great game, yet as it stands, it comes out as a mixed bag. There is great potential here for a franchise, however, and the only way to go is up as Spider Studios will hopefully iron out the flaws with the game for future releases. Flaws and all, there are worse ways to spend your money if Mars: War Logs has piqued your curiosity.

Mars: War Logs has flashes of brilliance, mostly stemming from its combat system. I really wanted to love the game more than I did, but it continuously disappointed me with simple flaws. I would like to see more of War Logs, just in a more polished fashion. What the team is doing here is commendable, and with a little more polish, and possibly funds, it could easily become a solid series. Until then though, this budget title definitely feels like just that.

That’s not to say everything in this title is bad. It’s still, for the most part, playable purely out of wanting to know what happens next. What happens when you finally escape the camp? What will the Technomancer do when she finds Roy? How will those decisions you made earlier come back to haunt you? With all of the faults, I can still imagine someone - who doesn’t consume games in the manner I do - falling in love with the game. Whether or not they can hold that love until the end is another thing altogether.

Gaming Age (Aug 23, 2013)
Admittedly, that love and care ultimately created a game that answers the question, "Hey, what would Mass Effect be like if every element of it kind of sucked?" But as you're rolling around on the ground, trying to hit the sick dog with your enhanced mole bone, hoping you can kill it and grab a sample of its diseased flesh to bring to the camp cook (who also happens to be a vet!) so he can craft a vaccine for a disease (that later turns out to not be communicable to humans)…none of that matters. If you can embrace the silliness — and, more importantly, overlook lots and lots and lots of glaring flaws — then you'll find that Mars: War Logs is, in it's own way, more fun than you could ever imagine.

Game Watcher (May 08, 2013)
Where it falls apart however is in the repetitiveness of the environment, the uselessness of Roy’s otherwise interesting companions, the regularly frustrating combat, and the mostly poor writing and acting. Mars is a fairly interesting action RPG with a cheap price on its side, but in all honesty it could do with being even cheaper. A nice attempt guys, some improvement is needed. And a bigger colour palette. And a better title.

Hooked Gamers (May 09, 2013)
Mars: War Logs aims high but ultimately falls short. Ironically, aiming so high highlights how short the game really falls. Ideas are introduced but not seen through. Combat is a mixed bag that slides from too difficult to too easy and character development only initially seems interesting. The real success of the game is in its setting. It feels authentic and kept me coming back for more, even when the poor writing begged me not to. Recommending the game is a challenge. As a follow-up to Of Orcs and Men, War Logs is a let down. If you only have $20, however, supporting a studio as intrepid as Spiders is worthy endeavor and there is fun to be had here. Still, caution is advised.

Game Critics (Jun 14, 2013)
In a way, that latter ending fits Mars: War Logs best. It's a competently executed brawler-style RPG, with a political story at its core that actually has some potential. Irrelevant mechanics and sidequests get in the way of the game's best aspects, however, and Mars: War Logs never manages to focus on what's important.

IGN (May 03, 2013)
While only the combat stands out as a true high-point, Mars: War Logs is at least an ambitious attempt at a budget RPG, in a much less overused setting than most. Silly Technomancers aside, it has all the pieces and ideas it needs to be something special – just not the writing chops or the raw resources needed to flesh them out to the level of the games it draws obvious inspiration from. The result is hard to recommend, with few diamonds to be found in the Martian rough. If you're willing to settle for occasional agate or topaz though, there are just enough sparkles here and there.

Destructoid (May 06, 2013)
Mars: War Logs is the kind of experience one can only call serviceable. It exists, it does what it does, and it performs its job suitably. It doesn't do anything terrible, but it never once goes above a basic standard of acceptability. It's very clear that it wants to ape the best action-RPGs of the genre, but its too basal and hurried to pull off a single remarkable thing. It's a shame because Spiders' last attempt -- Of Orcs and Men -- was genuinely great, a game that similarly failed to be all it wanted to be, but at least had an interesting story and some wonderful presentation.

RPGamer (2013)
Mars War Logs could have been a decent game if more time had been put into its strongest point, its vision of a dystopian future Mars. Unfortunately, the story as it's presented is difficult to care about, and the gameplay is too clunky to really be appealing without more driving it forward. It's not a lengthy game, clocking in at about fifteen hours, and it offers up a decent challenge for those seeking one. Strangely, although it offers up an adjustable difficulty scale, that scale goes from Medium to Hard to Difficult, with the Easy setting grayed out when players start a new game. I was unable to determine how to unlock it. The Medium difficulty is pretty challenging on its own, particularly early on, so it's difficult to really call it adjustable. With a dearth of decent western RPGs as of late, players desperate for something new might find that Mars War Logs scratches that itch, but don't expect anything amazing.

Gamekult (Apr 30, 2013)

Gameplanet (May 13, 2013)
Mars: War Logs has big ambitions, but it feels like it was rushed out the door – perhaps due to budgetary constraints. The makings of an impressive game are here, unfortunately it just doesn't hold together particularly well.

Thunderbolt Games (May 10, 2013)
With better pacing and a lot more balancing, Mars: War Logs could have been a fresh, satisfying take on BioWare’s proven formula. Its intriguing premise and characters eventually succumb to its broken systems, creating a fiction you’ll hope sooner to finish than completely understand. Maybe Mars just isn’t worth fighting for.
