Just watch this Fox News special on Mass Effect's sex scene.

Edit: That Geoff guy really tried, but like an evangelist preaching to an atheist he was just ignored.

And this article.

And this.

It's called "Mass Effect" and it allows its players - universally male no doubt - to engage in the most realistic sex acts ever conceived. One can custom design the shape, form, bodies, race, hair style, breast size of the images they wish to "engage" and then watch in crystal clear, LCD, 54 inch screen, HD clarity as the video game "persons" hump in every form, format, multiple, gender-oriented possibility they can think of.

They don't even do research, they talk like Mass Effect is somekinda interactive rape game, where in fact, the sex scene is your typical saccharine example of the "Titanic, Kate Winslet, steamy window, Leonardo" category (in case if there are any of those silly fundies lurking around here in MG, never can be too careful).

Like it's a bad thing. Personally, between a game that totally degrades a certain gender and a game that totally degrades an entire species (can't really think of one, but movies like Hostel somewhat isn't my thing), I'd prefer the former.

Degrading is evil. That's a fact because I said so. I could be politically correct and say that it's only my opinion and therefore it's relative in nature, but I believe that nothing good has come out of relativism. Therefore, the last four words that form a thought, are pure evil in my eyes Indra.

Very true to a certain extent. Evil (as is good) becomes relative only when you are exposed to more extreme forms of either. An example from the top of my head, one day you may consider "assault and battery with intent" as a form of evil, until you are exposed to "premeditated murder" and finally to "mass genocide". At this point, the assault and battery may no longer become evil, depending on how much extreme evils you are exposed to personally. Thus, depending on personal experience of exposure, certain ideas that may seem evil to one person, may not be to another.

But personally speaking, being exposed to greater forms of evil is never a good thing. People who have lost some levels of their humanity, will no doubt understand what I mean...

Oh boy, that's why I hate psychologists on TV shows: they're always talking about issues they don't know enough. She's going with the research? Aw, pleeeease, I beg to read that study...

This is bull. There are so many examples of them doing something stupid when it comes to games, taking them out of context, that I can't really remember all of them.

I only hope one of those gung-ho moral groups don't try to sue Bioware over this.

I'm sure they consulted their legal department before deciding to push the envelope in this particular direction. Besides, EA has deep pockets 8)

I've never seen logic or reason manage to stop them before. I'm sure they'll at least picket and protest, claiming the game harms minors even though it's intended for adults.

The US and Western Europe are so similar, but still have many cultural differences. I can't imagine any of the networks over here, even the commercial ones, to run a piece like this without being considered the TV's laughing stock.

The current "important" people of these times, who are given a public voice regularly, obviously have not grown up playing these games. This is all about to fade away in ten years time or so when a new generation takes over.

user avatar

The Fabulous King (1332) on 1/22/2008 12:35 PM · Permalink · Report

Yes, the new generation. Perhaps a new revolution too.

No this doesn't mean anything, but lately I've been wondering if the content that kids today feed on in tv shows - world pain, small group against the world, injustice against the good guys, etc - will lead to something new.

I couldn't believe that video. Absolutely stunning how the 'expert panel' ignore anything Geoff had to say and proceed to talk complete crap about something that have no knowledge of whatsoever. What incredible idiots.

I only hope one of those gung-ho moral groups don't try to sue Bioware over this.

I hope someone does try to sue BioWare... because the case would be laughed out of court, at considerable cost to whomever tried to sue. From what I've seen, this game has less flesh onscreen than a hell of a lot of PG-13 movies!

Ludicrous...

Way to boost ratings, Fox! I have to admit, I'm less than surprised at this new stupidity: lots of people will just eat this up and swallow it whole without checking the facts. No doubt I will be defending Mass Effect at work today (though I haven't played it, I've watched, :-D).

That's actually my main problem with this situation. The words of those idiots carry a lot of authoritative weight and they use it to cause damage. Damage that will have long-lasting effects.

Hmm.. It's my opinion that if a person is so dumb, that he can be easily convinced through such a horrible 5-minutes long mis-presentation, then he should stay clear of everything potentially harmful, including life.

The sane man would become interested in how video game treated sex, and would care to explore the issue further. Unfortunately (since there's very little sex in Mass Effect) he/she will be disappointed. But that's the only harmful effect I see.

Someone should put up a website, something like "The Hall of Fame of Over-achievers in Humanoid Stupidity and Incompetence related to Computer and Video Games". They'd float on top down there. Imagine: this titsa goes for a doctorate in developmental psychology.

Mass Effect fans are striking back! Check out all those new reviews for Coopers book at Amazon.

Some examples:

  • it's degrading to asaris and geth everywhere and i will not stand for this injustice.!!!! don't buy this book or the reapers will come back.

  • I have never read this book, and am rating it poorly based on things I have heard on TV. Why you ask? Because this author rated a video game poorly that she never played, but heard about on TV.

  • This type of book (as evidenced by the racy cover) will not be allowed in my house. I am simply not going to allow my children to be subject to overtly subversive material such as this. They are too busy playing Mass Effect anyways...

From Kotaku: EA calls Fox Out on "Insulting" Mass Effect Inaccuracies

The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

On the other hand, a sad, sad thing. I mean, this psychiatrist appears to be in dire need of some serious objectification herself...
