Nancy Drew: Curse of the Blackmoor Manor is truly a jewel (no pun intended) in Her Interactive's crown. It is lovely to look at, has great storytelling, and is just plain fun to play. The game can be difficult in some areas, but if you are an experienced Nancy Drew sleuth like me, you will enjoy the challenge.

The best of the Nancy Drew adventures to date, and even if you don’t like the series, this is one you just might wish to try. A well written story, colorful graphics, and interesting puzzles make this a winner.

When I first started to play this game, I was all set to give it a horrible, scathing review. I had one complaint after another, but something weird happened on the way through that I can't quite put a finger on. By the time I had played the game a second time, I had done an about-face, and was hooked. (I always play a game at least three times when writing a walkthrough - once to play and 'enjoy'; once to write the walkthrough; then once again, by following the WT to the letter, to make sure it "works" and doesn't lead a player astray.)

A strong storyline and some excellent attention to detail bring this young girl's classic to life. The house creaks and groans, the wind off the moors, it all supports the dark and creepy mood. No music at all, which I thought was odd. The voice work is well done but please remember this game is for lower-end hardware so the lip-synch and facial animations reflect that.

Once again, that inquisitive young lady, Nancy Drew, is hot on the trail of a spooky mystery. This time around, Nancy actually gets to leave the United States and visit England, where she is the guest of an old, aristocratic family, complete with large, rambling mansion.

Technical blips aside, "Blackmoor" offers plenty for newcomers to the series, and plenty of fresh charm to the seasoned Nancy fan. So, what are you waiting for? Get yourself to "Blackmoor Manor" forthwith. A delight in the puzzle department, and pleasantly surreal. Nancy will need your help, as not even she can cope with Bangers and Mash, Werewolf women and bonkers rococo architecture alone. The games afoot, and the alchemists are waiting.

Younger players might find some of the puzzles a bit tough, but it's time for the series to mature, much like its intended audience must be doing. In the end, the game's well-crafted puzzles, non-linear progress, abundance of mini-games and improved presentation add up to a fine offering. They also bode well for future installments in the series.

When I started to play The Curse of Blackmoor Manor I wondered if there was anything new to say about Nancy Drew and her friends. This is, after all, the 11th game in a long running series. Then, I thought back to the beginning and how hard it must have been to get that first game released. I can imagine Her Interactive walking into a publisher’s office, ready to pitch their game concept to some guy, surrounded by marketing materials featuring blood, guts and plenty of swagger.
Oversized cursor, unidentifiable inventory objects and an annoying puzzle aside, I enjoyed my trip to Blackmoor Manor enough to reward it with the FFC thumb up. The puzzles were challenging, the various ways to end my visit were hilarious, and the minigames added an extra bit of diversion and fun to the game. While the game may be a little difficult and scary for those at the low end of the age requirement, I think the 12+ group will have fun with it. I know that I did.

Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor is another fine Nancy Drew game. The story is fun and woven together well and puzzle-wise it's the best ever, even with the mini games and timed components that might frustrate some players.
