E' un bel gioco, si, ma posso dire di aver provato una punta di delusione? L'aspettativa iniziale ├Ę accesa dal mistero, ma poi tutto questo mistero si risolve alla fine in quattro e quattr'otto, quasi scontato e senza un'invenzione che dia una vera sorpresa. Quindi trovo questo gioco carente soprattutto nella storia, nella sceneggiatura. In certi punti dice troppo, in altri troppo poco.

Et surtout, l'ambiance est extr├¬mement bien rendue, avec une foule de d├ętails et de paysages dignes de vos cauchemars les plus glauques. Les musiques et les voix sont aussi assez bien faites, et am├ęliorent encore une atmosph├Ęre d├ęj├á tr├Ęs r├ęussie. Dommage que le challenge propos├ę de soit pas vraiment digne du reste du jeu, mais les fans de jeux d'enqu├¬tes et d'├ępouvante ne seront certainement pas d├ę├žus malgr├ę tout.

The quoted gaming length of 30 hours seems to be right more or less. I needed around 26 hours to complete the game, including the replaying time after deleting the game by mistake. Less experienced gamers may need 35 hours (without walkthrough) I estimate. A give a total rating of 68% for Necronomicon (satisfactory), cuts because of lacking suspense and the filler-mazes. Necronomicon is not an outstanding adventure game but because of easy handling, beautiful graphics and sometimes challenging puzzles I wouldnÔÇÖt advice someone against it ÔÇô but if you expect something similar or better than Dracula you will be disappointed.

Overall, Necronomicon just seems like a game that was developed too quickly. Dracula: the Last Sanctuary only came out three months ago, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that that's how long it took Wanadoo to make Necronomicon. The story is muddled, the puzzles are boring, the acting is bad, there are mistakes all over the place (like the cast pronouncing Wycherley in different ways, or the merchant selling you a map and some information for $40 -- in 1927, remember), the character models seem hurried, and there aren't even any good cinematics to make the game at least fun to watch. And Necronomicon is also short. The box claims it has 30 hours of gameplay, but I suspect the answer is more like 10. So if you're interested in H. P. Lovecraft, then you're much better off reading some of his stories than you are playing this less-than-impressive adventure.

In sum, Necronomicon: The Dawn of Darkness is a game that I can neither recommend nor condemn. There are a lot of zeniths to savor in the story, but the nadirs come in the form of too many mazes, timed sequences, and illogical puzzles. The premise is enticing, but the execution is flawed. For me, the good points more often outweigh the bad points on the balance for the game. For other gamers, this balance will not tip in the game's favor so easily.

Dialog with other characters can be difficult to hear, and with no option for subtitles or replay, this element is frustrating and unnecessary, a product of poor game design. Because of the lack of user-friendly help, you'll need to take copious notes to remember names, dates, and places the NPCs mention in conversation. Necronomicon features very linear gameplay, and progress slows to a crawl when you're unable to find the next elusive clue to further the storyline, although some hints are offered at the official website www.dreamcatchergames.com/support/necro.html.

Now that it is all over, I believe that I have had greater and more challenging adventures, and from what is written of Mr Harker I dare say his own were a touch more suspensful and frightening. He however only had to kill the undead, never bring them back to life, which is all I will say on that subject.

I am a huge adventure game fan and a big Dreamcatcher supporter, and it pains me to give this title a low score. It seems they are single handedly keeping the adventure genre alive for the PC these days. Dracula Resurrection was a huge step in the right direction. Necronomicon was just grossly disappointing. The positive side to all this is the 20-dollar price tag, but even that canÔÇÖt help this title from its one main flaw. It just wasnÔÇÖt fun to play.

Als bekennender Lovecraft-Fan hat mit Necronomicon zun├Ąchst mal angenehm ├╝berrascht, denn sowohl die Story als auch die unheilschwangere 3D-Welt entsprechen der Gedankenwelt des Gruselautors. So viel zu den Lichtblicken, ansonsten herrscht D├╝sternis. R├Ątsel sind ebenso Mangelware wie packende Grusel-Szenen, stattdessen wird gelabert, gelesen und umher gewandert. Die meisten H├Ąuser entpuppen sich als unbegehbare Staffage, Schubladen sind zun├Ąchst leer, sp├Ąter ohne Grund gef├╝llt. Wer daher Lovecrafts Erg├╝sse sowieso nicht mag, darf von der Wertung getrost noch zehn Punkte abziehen.

Is the game a disappointment? I'd have to say yes. Is it a total loss? Not at all! There are plenty of entertaining moments in the game; they're just not nearly consistent enough. If you're interested at all in occult mysteries, give it a whirl. If you're a fan of Lovecraft, you might want to lower your expectations heading in. If you're just a casual adventurer looking for the best the genre has to offer, you won't find it here.

Was haben wir denn hier? Ein Render-Adventure. Wie originell. Und die Handlung inspiriert vom Grusel-Altmeister H. P. Lovecraft? Muss von Cryo sein. Nein, Moment, die Entwickler hei├čen Wanadoo, kommen aber immerhin aus Frankreich. Nun ja. Ansonsten aber gleicht Necronomicon den Genre-Kollegen aus dem Hause Cryo wie ein Myst-Klon dem anderen. Sie erforschen h├╝bsch gerenderte 360-Grad-Schaupl├Ątze, f├╝hren Dialoge mit weniger h├╝bschen Plastik-M├Ąnnchen und l├Âsen Standard-R├Ątsel der Marke "suche Bildschirm nach Schl├╝ssel f├╝r T├╝r ab".

An interesting plot, creative puzzles, and imaginative mazes keep the players on their toes, but roadblocks seemed insert simply to lengthen gameplay. Better (and lighter) graphics and subtitles for speech and inventory would have helped.

Ein Computerspiel als Geh├Âr-Test, das ist mal etwas Neues. Im Ernst: Eine derart miese Synchronisation ist mir schon lange nicht mehr untergekommen. Und dass h├Ąssliche Render-Kulissen bildschirmweise umklappen, hatte ich eigentlich in die d├╝stere Vergangenheit der Myst-Klone verbannt. Necronomicon belehrt mich eines Schlechteren und kann mit seinem langweiligen R├Ątsel-Design auch echte Lovecraft-Fans nicht vor den Monitor bannen.

This game literally feels unfinished. Adding to the frustration is the highly questionable practice of having the game run almost entirely from the CD, making gameplay excruciatingly sluggish. It's like trying to jog through Jell-o.
