Just RPG (Aug 09, 2002)
All in all, I am extremely impressed by the quality of Neverwinter Nights, both the game play and visual aspects of the game. I urge anyone who has ever gotten any pleasure out of playing Dungeons & Dragons to go out and get a copy of this excellent offering.
Absolute Games (AG.ru) (Jun 28, 2002)
ComputerGames.ro (Jul 31, 2002)
Electric Playground (May 03, 2004)
They married Diablo 2 with Baldur's Gate, made it 3D, and threw in a suite of excellent multiplayer options and a super-easy-to-use module creation/editing tool. It. Doesn't. Get. Any. Better. Than. This.
Armchair Empire, The (Jul 27, 2002)
Great graphics, great score, intriguing story, thoroughbred pedigree—Neverwinter Nights has everything it takes to be Game of the Year. Add the editor to a brilliant and long (around 60 hours) single-player quest, and NWN is a great value and another of this year’s must-own releases for the PC.
PC Gamer (Sep, 2002)
But as I said, I prevailed. When I yelled at my paladin in the closing moments, “COME ON, GET A CRITICAL!” it was obvious I was sold, and you will be, too. NWN is a total package — a PC gaming classic for the ages.
Svenska PC Gamer (Jul, 2002)
GameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands) (Jun 27, 2002)
Netjak (Sep 27, 2002)
Neverwinter Nights is a roleplayer's dream. The ability to create any quest at any time about anything and share it with your friends. Multiplayer or single player, it can be done. THIS is the future of online multiplayer, not that massive stuff. Apart from poor sounds, average included modules, and some negatives in the new rules, Neverwinter Nights is a must have for any roleplayer out there.
GameZone (Jul 02, 2002)
This is an amazing game with tremendous depth of play, and a fantastic scenario editor. While the game has some minor problems (like the sound cutting out), it still provides players with a complete gaming experience. There is intrigue, adventure, and a lot of combat. Neverwinter Nights is certainly one of the best, if not the best, role-playing games of the year.
ActionTrip (Jun 29, 2002)
Nothing much to say about the whole thing in the end, except that I highly recommend Neverwinter Nights to all gamers, even to those who do not prefer AD&D (the game's tolerable to both inexperienced players as well as hardcore AD&D fans). The game is addictive and considerably lengthy; a RPG fan's dream. If there's any flaw worth mentioning, it might be several bugs I've encountered while playing. They were infrequent, but very irritating. Some of these errors have also caused the game to crash a few times (honesty, three times).
GameSpot (Jun 24, 2002)
Neverwinter Nights is one of those exceedingly rare games that has a lot to offer virtually everyone, even if they aren't already into RPGs.
Game Revolution (Jul 01, 2002)
That is, if you find you still have any friends left after getting into Neverwinter Nights. This is a terrific game, one of the best computer translations of D&D ever created. Though its gameplay is a bit ubiquitous, it offers more dork depth than anything else in town and simply shouldn't be missed by any self-respecting geek.
UGO (UnderGroundOnline) (Aug 13, 2002)
Neverwinter Nights is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It moves quicker than Baldur's Gate and has more depth than Diablo. It has everything I want in a game: beautiful environments, great sound and a whole lot of fun. I suggest you run out to buy this game; after all who knows when the next game of peanut butter cup importance will be.
Game Chronicles (Aug 22, 2002)
Bioware has definitely designed a winner in Neverwinter Nights. These guys have put five years of their life into this game and it really shows. The 3rd Edition Dungeon & Dragons Rules have been followed to a tee, and the gameplay is top notch. If you enjoy RPG’s and you have played any of the other Bioware games then I would highly recommend this game.
FiringSquad (Jun 08, 2002)
Once you toss in the graphics, sound effects, quality core rules and the toolset, it’s easy to understand how we came up with 91. If even half of what could happen with the modules in the next six months does happen, I’d give Neverwinter a 95%, Editor’s Choice and wish I’d somehow been on the credits of Neverwinter – to be associated with this excellent product. It’s just too bad that that’s one big “if” with no answer for now.
Game Over Online (Jun 23, 2002)
If you haven't guessed by the tone of this review, I really like this game. It's everything a role-playing fan could ask for. Decent graphics, a great story and endless possibilities with the Aurora toolset makes this a must buy for the hardcore RPG fan or even the casual in-between-classes RPG fan. So far it has also brought to life the ability to translate the newly released 3rd edition AD&D rules over from pen and paper to an interactive gaming environment.
GameSpy (Jun 22, 2002)
BioWare has done its part to sate its ambition by offering a fantastic standalone game and the potential for even more escapades through its creation tools. The impetus is now on the players to realize the game's full potential. As the immortal Captain Planet was fond of saying, "the power is yours."
Computer Gaming World (CGW) (Sep, 2002)
The fact is, BioWare could have released just the single-player game and been done with it. But the DM client and tools elevate Neverwinter Nights from being just another good RPG into a creative medium of expression.
PC Zone Benelux (Aug, 2002)
Niet party-based?
Play.tm (Aug 06, 2002)
The real strength of this title lies in the near limitless possibilities that the toolset and multiplayer client allow. Neverwinter Nights will really come into its own as the number, quality and coherence of the various online offerings increase, although that isn't to say that those areas are not already very impressive, especially for a title that has so recently hatched from it's egg. And like a dragon I feel that this game will have a long, strong life and will be entertaining the RPG faithful as well as the new converts for many, many years. It could even begin to nip at the heels of the big MMORPGs if the portals and persistent world servers live up to their mighty potential. So whether you prefer to play alone or enjoy the company of others or are even happier making your own little world, Neverwinter Nights is a feat of programming art and entertainment which everyone should try, at least twice.
Atomic Gamer (Jul 12, 2002)
Is Neverwinter Nights worth your gaming dollar? It really depends on whether you've played previous D&D RPG titles, and how much you're itching for a multiplayer RPG. If you've never played the Baldur's Gate series, Planescape: Torment, or Icewind Dale, it's a fine single player game with the possibility of some very engaging multiplayer action. If you've already had enough of the type of game listed above, though, and don't really care that much for the online aspect, you may want to skip it.
ESC Magazine (Jul 12, 2002)
This is a review that I've been looking forward to writing, about a game that I've been looking forward to playing for a good, long time. Neverwinter Nights has been in development for something close to five years, adding promises and new features as it grew, heightening hype among the loyal BioWare fans and casual gamers alike. I was actually nervous while I was installing the game, thinking back to the last AD&D title I played (the lamentable Pools of Radiance II), and hoping that my own anticipation wasn't outdistancing the final product.
Gameplanet (Jul 23, 2002)
Recommending Neverwinter Nights is a no-brainer. It's one of the most anticipated games of all time and Bioware have delivered a true gem. The best 'true' RPG game on the market without a doubt.
AllRPG (Jul 30, 2002)
All in all Neverwinter Nights is a great game that was well worth the wait. With its successful combination of the Third Edition D&D rules, good graphics, and solid game-play it could not be anything else but great. This game was well worth the long wait, and someone who enjoys Dungeons and Dragons, and particularly the Forgotten Realms settings, will find this game very suitable to them. For the casual role-player this game should still be recommended as a hit game that is well worth the time and money.
Cincinnati Enquirer (Jul 24, 2002)
This incredibly deep and gratifying RPG was designed and developed by the same folks responsible for the popular "Baldur's Gate" series.
Entertainment Depot, The (Aug 01, 2002)
When all is said and done, Neverwinter Nights stands as a landmark achievement for the RPG community, coming full circle with its tabletop roots by giving fans full control over a true digital version of pen-and-paper functionality. Exciting, empowering, and, more importantly, fun, it's the ultimate tool for the true RPG fan, who shouldn't hesitate in the least to pick up this amazing gem.
Game Vortex (Sep 03, 2002)
If you've always been afraid of RPG's and their infamous random battle system, fear not. NN combines exciting action with all the tiny details of its pen and paper predecessors. Whether you're an old fan or new to these games, Neverwinter Nights is accessible as it is excellent, and definitely worth a look.
TotalVideoGames (TVG) (Jun 21, 2002)
Overall this is a game that shall not disappoint, the game is huge and ultimately endless. If you’re going to play on your own there is enough to keep you playing for days, take it online and you have a masterpiece that could last you a lifetime. A true credit to Bioware and Atari we take our hats of to you.
Gameguru Mania (Jul 07, 2002)
Needless to say that Neverwinter Nights (NWN) is a new Dungeons & Dragons RPG from Bioware, the makers of Baldur's Gate. For those who didn't play this game yet, NWN looks and feels similar to Diablo and Dungeon Siege at first, but it quickly becomes apparent that it's no top-down hack-n-slash game how some people can think. I don't want to hype this already "hyped" game, but NWN takes all of the best elements of Baldur's Gate 2 and improves them, as well as avoiding some of the more inconvenient features and while it's not exactly a hack-n-slash game, it certainly moves a lot faster than Baldur's Gate. NWN also features 3rd Edition AD&D rules instead of 2nd, which allows for much greater customization in character creation and advancement. I'm also pretty surprised that Neverwinter Nights is actually very accessible, much more than most RPGs, making it equally recommendable to new players.
AceGamez (Oct 16, 2003)
Neverwinter Nights is, overall, a very nice game. Great graphics and a solid soundtrack, bundled together with a very large game involving a surprisingly solid plot. Fans of Baldur's Gate, or indeed any D&D style role playing game, will undoubtedly find NWN a rewarding, if very time consuming, experience. Though the combat interface requires little more than selecting a weapon or spell and clicking on the unfortunate creature you wish to destroy next, as a contribution to the world of D&D you can be assured that Bioware's latest offering is a significant and worthwhile one. If you're a hardcore D&D player you must have this game. Just don't expect to pick up any hot chicks with it.
GamersHell.com (Jun 29, 2002)
I can do nothing but rave about this game. Deep and sophisticated singleplayer, rich and truly social multiplayer, there is nothing that stands out as needing improvement. I almost feel the $60 USD pricetag is worth it. Do I have any issues with this game at all? Only one. As good as this game is, as much as I am having fun with it, its still a Baldur's Gate clone. Adding a good multiplayer aspect and updating the graphics does not change that. I think this issue is going to come up more and more as we see the next wave of games. We are in a stagnant period. The next wave of games are steps in an evolutionary process, but are far from revolutionary.
GamePro (US) (Jul 23, 2002)
With a solid, gorgeous base game design and scores of community talent waiting to create free content for the game, Neverwinter Nights is a must-get for PC RPG fans with dreams of game design. It might not replace those Saturday night D&D tabletop sessions, but it will easily replace all but the best PC RPGs on your hard drive.
Game industry News (GiN) (Jul 26, 2002)
That said, rarely have I found a game as captivating as Neverwinter Nights. I found myself thinking about the game while I was away from it, and that does not happen often. That shows the strength of the plot, and the professionalism of the overall presentation. The limitless expansion ability of the game and the multiplayer aspects really make Neverwinter Nights worth the money. Plus its darn cool to be able to be the DM of a multiplayer game, and use the third edition rules to boot. Add onto that a perfectly good single player RPG, and you have a solid contender for Game of the Year.
Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault) (Jun 12, 2002)
Neverwinter Nights represents a revolutionary step forward in role-playing games. Like most revolutions, it has its growing pains, but the gameplay experience, as well as the monumental potential for community involvement vastly overshadows its problems. Any fan of the RPG genre should not be caught dead without a copy of Neverwinter Nights on his or her PC. It goes a long, long way toward getting at the heart of what draws players to RPGs: It supports a vast array of gaming styles, its systems cannot help but feel polished after so many years of development on tabletops across the country, and the production values are sky-high. I'd recommend Neverwinter Nights to any gaming friend I've ever had.
Loadedinc. (Oct 20, 2002)
Well, 60 gameplay hours and two inches of facial hair later, I can emerge from my crypt to tell you that Neverwinter Nights is incredibly addicting. But, before I trip over my enthusiasm, here’s some preliminary information on the game. Neverwinter Nights is an ambitious role-playing game that utilizes the third edition Dungeons & Dragons rules. If that means nothing to you, that’s ok, because the game’s engine handles all the transparent dice-rolling required to determine attacks, saving throws, and the like. However, it is helpful to study the manual (it’s loaded with over 200 pages of information) and try to learn how a lot of the features work such that you can upgrade your character appropriately.
IGN (Jun 21, 2002)
Neverwinter Nights is undoubtedly one of the most highly-anticipated games of this year. After five years in development, the game is finally done, and to the delight of RPGers around the world, Bioware hasn't left us disappointed. If the shear size of this five-page review scares you, then you'll be happy to know that Neverwinter Nights is good, very good, even brilliant in some aspects. There hasn't been a night for the past week and a half that I haven't stayed up to well into the night (and early, early morn') beating orcs, minotaurs, and hobgoblins -- and I've enjoyed just about every second of it. But of course, like everything, Neverwinter Nights isn't perfect.
RPGFan (Jul 08, 2002)
Arguably one of the most-hyped games ever released, Neverwinter Nights has a lot to live up to. When you tell people your game will change the game industry forever, you'd better come through. If you don't, well, look what happened to John Romero after Daikatana. Thankfully, NWN lives up to, and in some ways surpasses, the hype in every way and is one of the very best role-playing games ever created.

The best game ever to evolve out of the Baldur’s Gate game engine? We think so.
GameStar (Germany) (Jul, 2002)
Was sollen etwa die Vierkant-Levels?
CanadianGamer (Sep 03, 2002)
In the end, it seems like this game has something for almost everyone: exciting single-player, and an extensive multiplayer enhanced by various modules. It is obvious that the developers have put maximum effort into making Neverwinter Nights a solid product with truly endless replay value.
PC Games (Germany) (Jul 26, 2002)

Neverwinter Nights garanteed to put a chill in your summer evenings!
GamingIllustrated.com (Jul 08, 2002)
In case you don’t know, I regard the Baldurs Gate games extremely highly in every respect. I have never touches pen and paper D&D but I fell for Biowares little pieces of genius in a big way, now 2 years old, Baldurs Gate 2 is still as impressive as ever on every level. Neverwinter Nights is the very long awaited title from Bioware set on the Sword Coast where a whole new set of adventures await you…Neverwinter Nights is a very impressive title, but I feel somewhat disappointed as it simply isn’t as good as Baldurs Gate 2.
GameBanshee (Jun 24, 2003)
Neverwinter Nights is a game of epic proportions, but one that fails to draw me into the single-player story. Although the graphics are fully 3D and produce some spectacular special effects, they do not compare to those of recent CRPGs like Morrowind. However, it does have compelling online components, which allow for virtually unlimited replayability, and the dynamics of the game are well thought out and implemented. Although it may not appeal to all gamers, I would definitely recommend Neverwinter Nights to CRPG and Dungeons & Dragons fans.
All in all, Neverwinter Nights is an RPG that may have some problems now, but will only get better with age. Once the community learns how to use the toolset, some truly impressive modifications will appear, extending the game beyond imagination. Neverwinter Nights is the best implementation of tabletop role-playing available today, and coupled with the impressive toolset and D&Dish multiplay, it will most likely remain on hard drives for a very long time.
Gamesdog (Dec 16, 2003)
With a promise of over 60-hours in the single player mission, the chance to become a dungeon master in the multiplayer arena with your friends and the option to create or own characters from scratch, Neverwinter Nights offers plenty to the hardened RPG fan, better still, it lives up to what it has been promising for the last five years; A superb game. One million players can't be wrong.
Quandary (Aug 22, 2002)
Well that's my complaints over and done with ... Neverwinter Nights isn't perfect. But I nevertheless had a great time on this journey and it's kept me well and truly entertained for the past few weeks. The graphics are excellent, the new 3D engine and music contribute greatly to the atmosphere, and the mapping and journal functions keep you right on track. Also you have the option to control the camera in three different ways and there is a handy function to zoom in on the action, which I greatly appreciated. I have to say that although I do fervently wish that the game had been based on a traditional party system, my wayward helpers never deterred me; I always had the urge to continue. The story kept me very happy; the questing was engrossing ... even now I have the urge to dip into it again ... but unfortunately not the time!
GamerDad (Dec 14, 2003)
Neverwinter Nights had an absolutely huge reputation to live up to when it was released. However, it managed to perform quite well despite such high expectations. Billed as a great tool to help D&D role players to play 3rd edition Dungeons and Dragons together online, as well as a computer RPG building tool, it succeeded on many levels. The final game can actually be broken down into three main parts. The sample adventure provided with the game to demonstrate its capabilities, the scenario-building tools that can be used to build scenarios to exchange and play through live, and the Dungeon Master interface that allows a Dungeon Master to adjust and create a game module on the fly while playing online with his players. Each of the three parts of the game may not quite rate the price of a full computer game the three parts together make for a game that no fan of role-playing games should be without.
Tap-Repeatedly/Four Fat Chicks (Apr 07, 2004)
I come away from Neverwinter Nights thinking to myself, "That was fun. Now what can I write about?" There is not much to say. Neverwinter Nights is fun, a lot of fun. It is also bland. Despite its figurative colorlessness, it has an addictive quality to it. I started down the Path to Gaming Enlightenment and Achievement of the One True Electronic Nirvana the arcades of the 1980s, when platform was my thing. "Just one more level—gimme another quarter, willya?" Perhaps that is why Neverwinter Nights worked for me.
Jaded Gamer, The (Mar 21, 2003)
Neverwinter Nights is a difficult game to review given the fact that the toolset is really the center attraction here. This both strengthens and weakens the game as a whole, but in the long run, I think that the good outweighs the bad.
GamersWanted (Jul 11, 2002)
Without making this review twenty-five pages long, I've tried to do the best to touch on some of the major aspects of Neverwinter Nights. There is still much I haven't covered, but hopefully you get an idea of what the game is and what you can do with it. If you are only interested in playing and not building, then Neverwinter Nights should have endless amounts of player created modules available for download. Probably enough to keep you busy for years to come - there are already hundreds. If you're into 3rd Edition D&D then you are going to have a great time as a player in the vast community of Neverwinter Nights. For builders - you're task may seem daunting, and with good reason. But don't be too discouraged. If you put the time and effort into it, your perseverance will be rewarded. I'll personally be playing Neverwinter Nights for years to come.
Mygamer.com (Oct 28, 2004)
Neverwinter Nights is Bioware's beautiful rendition of the Dungeons and Dragons world. Through an impressive graphics engine and a gameplay system true to the D&D universe, Neverwinter Nights is one of the best D&D games on the market. The game is set chiefly in Neverwinter, a major city in the south of Forgotten Realms. You are at the Neverwinter Academy where you are to be trained as a warrior to help combat the plague that has recently befallen the city. Not long after your training is complete the forces behind the plague take action and it is your duty to discover and defeat the evil forces that are laying siege to Neverwinter - it's slightly more complicated than it sounds.

This game is not a one I would recommend to everyone or even every RPG fan. It just needs a lot of patience and commitment from the player for it to show its true value. If you manage to endure it at first and try to like it, it will give you maybe more than you actually ask for. You just have to learn to like it for you to see the true beauty and great capabilities this game possesses.

And the answers are fairly, and absolutely.
