GameGenie (2000)
In conclusion, this game is fun, addictive, beautiful, and artistic. The game developers truly put their hearts into the production of Nox, and it really shows throughout every part. I personally can't find a fault anywhere, and I know that even in a few years I'll probably be playing this game every so often just to show myself how a good game is made. Westwood Studios took a bit of a chance with this type of game, considering the flock of first person shooters and real time strategy games, but just like they did with Command & Conquer, they came up with a hit.

Electric Games (2000)
Nox does follow the basic design for the popular action/RPG hybrid game, but does it in a much different way than anyone else has done. This is no mere Diablo clone; Nox features a well-thought out story with intelligent quests to follow along the way. It is a well-polished game that is well worth playing. For fans of this game type, I highly recommend Nox. Bottom Line: Nox follows the action/RPG hybrid formula, but also provides wonderful graphics, a highly polished interface, and a well-developed storyline. The quests are a lot of fun,the world is well designed, and dungeons are laid out strategically. If you enjoyed Diablo or Darkstone, this is your type of game.

With solid gameplay and graphics for both single and multiplayer modes, Nox is a really fun game that delivers the goods.

Ars Technica (Mar, 2000)
Westwood pulled off a smooth move with Nox. They took a game that is essentially a clone of Diablo and reinvented it enough to make it fresh, fun and addictive to play. Nox rox!

Old PC Gaming (Dec 28, 2013)
Serious role-playing fans will not find story and substance here, but Nox is greater than the sum of its parts. It's silly and vapid and mesmerizing and addictive and a must for anyone who wants a quick session of isometric twitch gaming.

Game industry News (GiN) (2000)
Still, Nox is quite an enjoyable title, and far exceeds other Diablo-like adventures. It gets 4 1/2 Gems, losing a half gem for the simple character classes and the "find the key" game levels.

GameZone (Feb 24, 2000)
Westwood Studios' Nox has been a highly anticipated title. And Westwood lives up to the hype with a game that is amazing graphically, sports tremendous audio and is just a lot of fun to play. And talk about a huge game board. Nox features seven general areas, each with different challenges.

Nox, Westwood's action/RPG, is a frag-fest of the first order. Check out the review to find out what makes this game rate a 4.5 Fun Factor.

Nox Àr roligt i stort sett hela tiden.

In the end, Nox is a fantastic game that I highly recommend to just about everyone. The problems it does have are minor and will most likely be fixed by the company in the next few weeks. If you've got the machine to run it and you're looking for something new in multiplayer gaming, I urge you to go out and pick up a copy of this fine game.

GameSpy (Mar 02, 2000)
Yes, yes, you say, but is it fun? I'd have to go with a resounding YES! Nox has been able to suck me in like no other game has in a long time. I find myself playing for hours and hours, only to look at the clock and realize half the night is over and I need to get up early tomorrow. Or my kids start badgering me because I've forgotten to feed them again. :) A good barometer of the fun factor in games is whether or not you neglect your kids because you're having too much fun living another life.

Game Captain (Mar 20, 2000)

Buy this game. A lot of hard work and effort was put into it by Westwood, and for a company that always seems to be shadowing its competitors, it took a lot of risk to put this title out, and it was to their success. Westwood compared this game the many elements of Wizards Magic: The Gathering card game, and for any die-hard RPG fan, this would be a great addition to their collection, not only for fun, but also to bring them up to date to the new genre of RPG's, with Westwood, to a certain extent, leading this market.

Gamezilla (Mar 30, 2000)
Nox is an exciting game with a storyline that may seem shallow at first, but grabs your attention and holds it until the end. Along the way, in standard Westwood fare, there are several priceless moments of sidesplitting humor youâll have to see to believe. The ending is also surprising, almost what youâd expect from a good independent film. Alas, the single player campaign does feel a bit hurried. I managed to hack through the game for the first time in less than 10 hours. When it was all over, I found myself wishing there was more.

FiringSquad (Feb 21, 2000)
Still, if you're just plain dying for Diablo II, this is the game to kill the time in between. Who knows, maybe you'll like its Arena and FlagBall aspects so much you'll keep playing even when Diablo II comes out.

Game Informer Magazine (Apr, 2000)
Nox offers a great deal to the single and multiplayer experience, although I thought it was unfortunate there was no cooperative Quest mode. The impressive variety of spells, special abilities, and toys to play with lend the game a whole heck of a lot of replay value. My only complaint is that the single player game could easily have been a more exploratory game as all of the areas are actually linked together. You can't leave whatever area you happen to be in due to blocked passages and locked doors. Despite this, Nox features intriguing gameplay and a thrilling multiplayer experience.

Nachdem Diablo 2
vermutlich erst in
der zweiten JahreshÀlfte erscheint,
stellt sich gar nicht die
Frage, welches der beiden Spiele
besser ist, denn bis dahin hat
jeder Nox mehrfach durchgespielt.
SpaĂ macht es in jedem
Fall, vorausgesetzt Sie stehen
auch auf schnelle 2D-Actionspiele,
in denen Reaktion und
Hand-Augen-Koordination Àhnlich
viel zÀhlen wie die richtige
Kampfstrategie. Eine ĂŒberzeugende
Charakterentwicklung
und andere Rollenspielelemente
habe ich vermisst. Dadurch
hÀtte Westwood die Motivation
leicht noch steigern können.
Schade ist auch, dass Sie im
Mehrspielermodus nur gegeneinander
und nicht die Kampagne
spielen können, weil dadurch
die Charakterentwicklung komplett
wegfÀllt und alle einfach in
der Maximalstufe beginnen.

Kudos to Westwood for this outing, and if they can continue on in this fashion, their place among first class Role Playing Game producers may not be completely out of reach. They still have a long road to walk before I can forgive them for Lands of Lore II and III, but Nox goes a long way toward restoring my faith.

Warum
muĂ ich erst neben einen Gegenstand rennen,
um ihn aufzunehmen? Warum legt
mein Held nicht gleich die aufgesammelte
bessere RĂŒstung an? Das kann ich im Solomodus
noch verknusen; bei den ansonsten
sehr guten Deathmatches verliere ich aber
wertvolle Sekunden. Wenn mein Gegner
mich beim Klamottenwechseln erwischt,
bin ich im Nu ein AschehÀufchen.
Seiâs drum: Die paar SchwĂ€chen Ă€ndern
nichts daran, daĂ Nox das derzeit beste
und abwechslungsreichste Action-Rollenspiel
ist â zumindest, bis Diablo 2 endlich
in die LĂ€den kommt. Weil bis dahin aber gut
und gerne noch einige Monate ins Land
gehen können, sollten Sie Nox unbedingt
ausprobieren.

Game Revolution (Feb 01, 2000)
NOX is a straightforward, fun game. The action elements are fettered only by some slight RPG ingredients which effectively add the depth that is needed to keep your attention and make slashing yet another sprite-based-beasty a thrill every time. It's not revolutionary or real obsession material, but it sure is good, sweet fun.

Gamer's Pulse (Mar 10, 2000)
Westwood Studios have dodged the clone label by a long shot with Nox. It is nice to know they decided to create a new game instead of copying the tried and true method. As a result, we have a new game which will be sure to affect future games. The three classes and their various abilities are a blast to play and not one class stands out as being superior to the others. The excellent graphics help to showcase the game to the public, and then the excellent gameplay sucks them right into the world of Nox. If you are still waiting for me to say whether the game is worth it, it is, so go out and buy it now! I will see you on the Nox battlefield -- if you see me, GW-MackD, say Hello!

PC Player (Germany) (Mar, 2000)

GameSpot (Feb 22, 2000)
Nox could easily have been a game with a few original ideas that devolved into a hastily developed, derivative, and uninteresting clone. Instead, the developers have taken the necessary time to create a unique and polished game that offers different and enjoyable single- and multiplayer experiences.

Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Apr, 2000)
Even the arcade aspect isn't perfect - poor enemy targeting can leave warriors blindly hacking away, taking the skill out of combat. Multiplayer offers first-person shooter-type modes like Capture The Flag with up to 32 online players, but there's no co-op mode for the main adventure. Nox is a fun, lightweight RPG that's good for a quick hit or RPG newbies.

Nox is an extremely solid game that has obviously been painstakingly play tested. Objects always seem to be in just the right spot, levels are designed with playability first, and all other features second. The single-player experience is well rounded, offers a decent storyline, and multi-character pathways that give it some replay value. The multiplayer aspects of Nox are strong and offer the action crowd a good deal of value. Hardcore role-playing enthusiasts will be disappointed in the lack of a cooperative multiplayer component and limited character management, but should revel in the blockbuster spellcasting and chaotic combat systems. Itâs unfair to simply dismiss NOX as a DIABLO clone, since the game had been in development limbo for years prior to its acquisition by Westwood. Westwood acquired the orphaned NOX following the dissolution of Virgin Interactiveâs U.S. gaming division, and the company has done a great job finalizing the game. Even though it likely could have been released several months ago, the additional attention to detail put into the game has resulted in a streamlined interlace, solid single-player campaigns and, overall, a considerably more polished product. Even the installation program is almost as interesting as the great one that shipped with the original COMMAND & CONQUER.
NOX could easily have been a game with a few original ideas that devolved into a hastily developed, derivative, uninteresting clone. Instead, the developers have taken the necessary time to create a unique game that offers different and enjoyable single- and multiplayer experiences.

Computer Games Magazine (Oct 16, 2000)
While chewing a path through hordes of devilish monstrosities certainly has its charm, it's a charm that eventually grows tiresome. Nox Quest has nearly endless replayability, but chances are you will move on to something new long before you run out of game. Westwood's free offering isn't spectacular, but it's an enjoyable diversion, and it's free. Aside from the occasional lag problems and repetitive gameplay, it's certainly worth checking out. If you aren't expecting anything extraordinary, it won't disappoint you. It's always good to see companies support their products.
