The Old City: Leviathan is a bold game for its complete focus on the narrative that translates into a gameplay experience that is both atmospheric and haunting. While the game's story can sometimes become too obscure for its own good, the majority of the narrative experience shouldn't be missed by adventurous gamers.

If you’re into the kind of discovery and exploration I’ve outlined here then The Old City Leviathan is a puzzle box you’ll enjoy unlocking through many hours of play. There are literal and metaphorical leaps of faith you’ll need to take in order to gain full enjoyment, but if you revel in metaphor and a world laced with biblical references and names then The Old City promises to be a journey you’ll remember and enjoy. I can’t say that I found it satisfying and many, if not most, themes went well over my head, but I can see why so many find this genre of discovery simulator so immersive and compelling. The Old City has a tendency to get into your head and bones after a few hours and as this is the first of a trilogy, I’m eager to see where Leviathan will take me next.

I dare not recommend The Old City: Leviathan to those who are not into the philosophical nature of life, but I strongly advise those who want to play something more than a game to not skip this one.

Wenn man The Old City als philosophischen Spaziergang betrachtet, dann weckt dieser durchaus Interesse, weil es um existenzielle Fragen vom Glauben bis zur Gewalt, von der Erlösung bis hin zur Selbstzerstörung sowie eine utopische Gesellschaft geht. Und dafür gehen die Stimme und die Kulisse als Elemente des Storytellings eine Symbiose ein, indem sie parallel erzählen. Theoretisch eine gute Idee, aber in der Praxis sehr ermüdend. Dear Esther wirkte auf mich so magisch wie eine Kurzgeschichte von Ray Bradbury. The Old City wirkt dagegen so verkopft wie ein Hörspiel, das von Peter Sloterdijk in einem Anflug surrealer Umnachtung eingesprochen wurde. Ich weiß zu schnell, dass es hier nur um irgendein Begreifen gehen soll, zumal man den einzigen interaktiven Aspekt dafür einsetzt, mit seitenlanger Lektüre eine überflüssige dritte Erzählebene aufzubauen.
There’s nothing worth remembering about The Old City: Leviathan. There’s no story, characters or lore: just expansive pages of text that do more to frame a metaphysical theology than deliver a worthwhile reason to press onward. The controls do no better, forcing the player to conscientiously wade through the world instead of blissfully and freely exploring. Exploration is given no purpose or convenience, and for a game whose premise is built on letting the player collect info pieces their way, there are far too many walls to evade. The biggest wall of all? The fact that there are none. No direction, no reasoning, not even the most basic of skeleton to support you. With all this in mind, The Old City: Leviathan is by far the most player-hostile game I’ve ever played. It provides no degree of accommodation for anything, mentally or tactilely. The Old City: Leviathan wants you to think, but it doesn’t give you anything to think about.
