When you take into account that Payday is an indie game and the promise of potentially more levels down the lines as downloadable content, there is very little reason to not pick this game up. If you enjoyed games like the Left 4 Dead series and movies like Heat, then you really should check our Payday: The Heist. With four people playing together, it is a lot of fun. So put on your suit, grab your clown mask and let’s go make (take) some money.

On PC where it belongs, Payday: The Heist mostly lives up to its lofty potential. Those moments and sessions where everything is working together as intended are some of the best times I’ve had with a shooter this year. A lackluster backend and some minor issues around the edges keep it from greatness, but if you have any friends you can count on to have your back in a frantic firefight, this is a worthy investment.

Though the world would be a better place if Payday had spent an extra three months in post-production, here it is, warty and slightly shonky in places, but built on rock-solid foundations. If it doesn't quite match up to a high watermark like Left 4 Dead, that's no great criticism, and in its very finest moments - let's mention that superb audio design again - Payday is as good as cops and robbers gets. More of a smash and grab than a smooth raid, then, but you can't deny that it's come away with the goods.

I've played the two versions of PAYDAY across a number of hours and haven't even succeeded in a large number of heists, but that hasn't stopped me having a real laugh with it. PAYDAY: The Heist is a classic example of a diamond in the rough, a game that is just too enjoyable at its core for any of its issues to remain unforgivable. I have a feeling that, with continued support, it will only get better and better, and I think that shooter fans looking for something both different and perversely empowering will get a real kick out of what PAYDAY: The Heist has to offer. It has most definitely stolen itself a victory.

Adrenalinestoot gegarandeerd!

PAYDAY: The Heist is a game that has an amazing concept but doesn’t fully deliver on them. The core of the game is solid and the game could use some tweaking and polishing. Playing single player can be an exercise in frustration, but playing co-op is a hell of a lot of fun. If you have friends who want to join you in some criminal enterprise, then it’s definitely worth checking out. I enjoy playing the game and there’s a good foundation here. If they can improve the AI of the computer controlled teammates and allow them to help with objectives, allow hostages to be moved, and perhaps streamline some objectives, then PAYDAY: The Heist could be a big score.

Overall, this game doesn't break any new ground. The graphics aren't mindblowing, the story isn't really existent, and the premise, while not nearly as tired as, say, the war-shooter, is just... there; nothing lost, nothing earned. Be that as it may, it would be incredibly unfair to say I didn't like it – quite the opposite, in fact. I enjoy shooters, both tactical and arcade, so this game was right up my alley. The missions were fun, and it certainly did a fantastic job of keeping me and my three partners in crime engaged and wanting more. There's little that takes away from the game, but also little that makes it stand out. If you enjoy the Rainbow 6 or SWAT games, but want to see what it feels like to be on the other side of the legal fence, this game is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with your three besties.

PayDay: The Heist is not a deep game, it's not polished and if it were a $60 retail game it wouldn't be worth it, but as a $20 digital title, it's more than worth it. The game is filled with tense moments that are sure to keep you and your multiplayer buddies on your toes, and perhaps more importantly, it's a title that feels different than most shooters on the market.

Payday: The Heist has a brilliant concept at its heart, and that's further rounded out by some great art direction and some solid level design that makes a few of the missions real fun to play. Unfortunately, though, budget production values are evident in the graphics and limited selection of levels, and these factors inevitably come into conflict with a higher-than-expected price point. The cherry on top of all this, though, is the sense of wasted potential that permeates through Payday: The Heist like a stain. The premise of a multiplayer bank-robbing shooter is enough to excite even the most jaded of gamers (Hi!), but it's ultimately a premise that isn't fully delivered - instead, Overkill Software has presented a seen-it-before multiplayer game where the strengths exactly equalise the weaknesses. The result is purely predictable and average, not altogether awful but certainly not worth rushing out to buy.
