Bottom Line: Very entertaining and challenging gameplay. Lots of levels to keep you playing for a long time. The graphics look good, but require you to set the video mode of your computer before running the game to prevent lockups. Make sure you get the patch for the game if you're using a SoundBlaster audio card.

Even in the early stages, this game isn't for the fidgety. Plenty of deep thought needs to go into each phase of solving the different mini-puzzles in every room. Meshing basic action elements with an overall puzzle theme traditionally fails, but Ambertec manages to mix up this volatile combination quite well. By Osiris' ears, Pharaoh's Ascent delivers a worthy challenge for any puzzle enthusiast.

Ambertec is to be congratulated for developing a game of such challenge and complexity in its first effort. The designers have truly succeeded in providing an opportunity to stretch the mind rather than the trigger finger in an entertaining and attractive gaming environment. However, the no-frills approach to interface and audio effects lessened my enjoyment of the game, and I do believe the company may be slightly overestimating the cranial capacity of the average game player out there. Let me say this, though — if you feel cocky and need to be cut down to size, or if your are extremely patient and adore brain teasers, then this one’s for you.

All in all, PHARAO'S ASCENT is just another 2D action/puzzle game that fails to bring anything new to the genre. Yes, there's more puzzle than action here, but the level of gameplay will be redundant to all but the complete novice. This one should be reserved for newbies looking for a game to ease themselves into the genre or for LODE RUNNER fanatics in desperate need of a fix.
