Overall, Portal 2 is among the best video games ever made. Fans of adventure or puzzle games must not miss out on this gem of a game. The story is amazing, the graphics are great, and the gameplay is rewarding. Unfortunately, Portal 2 does not feature an Advanced Chambers mode akin to that in the original Portal. Aside from this singular criticism, the game is as close to perfect as it can possibly get. In my eyes, Portal 2 is a definite contender for the best game of the year.
Jeuxvideo.fr (Apr 19, 2011)
This was one sequel that was both worth the wait, and everything it was cracked up to be. Even with the minor gameplay tick for accessibility mentioned above, it still averaged out to a 5-gem game, which it fully deserves. By the way, I believe a statement was issued that this was to be the last Valve title to offer an exclusive single-player experience. I hope this isn't the case, because I was about to start the "We want our Portal 3" chant.
Inside Gaming (Apr 18, 2011)
I don’t think Portal 2 will end up being the watershed “ah ha!” moment that Portal was. There was a certain magic to the first game that will never be recaptured. That being said, Portal 2 is better in just about every way possible. The puzzles are more intricate, the writing is better than most movies or TV shows I’ve seen, and the production value is everything you’ve come to expect from the guys that brought you Half-Life. Portal 2 certainly isn’t a perfect (no game is) but it is one that I can’t recommend enough.
Gameblog.fr (Apr 19, 2011)
Gamernode (Apr 26, 2011)
When it comes to making video games, a strong argument can be made that Valve is among the best out there. They are like the Pixar of the videogame industry, setting the standard for others, never disappointing, and delivering product on a consistent, predictable schedule. That last fact actually only applies to Pixar, but you get the idea. Portal 2 is an absolutely worthy successor to the original, and it is, objectively, a better game. Nothing will ever replace the first time you solved a puzzle in the original Portal, or when GLaDOS began to serenade you during the end credits, but you will find yourself just as absorbed into the world and congratulating yourself on your personal genius every few minutes. Portal 2 is a perfect example of what video games should be, and there is no reason to pass it up.
videogamer.com (Apr 19, 2011)
I think you knew all along this was going to be great. Fantastic, even. All the same, I don't think you'll be prepared for it being this good. I may have buttoned my lip in terms of concrete spoilers, but a mere ten minutes here will yield more memorable moments than you're likely to squeeze out of the entirety of most other games this year. In all aspects of its design, Portal 2 is genius.
G4 TV: X-Play (Apr 18, 2011)
When you review, you need to think about your predilections and your preconceptions. I admit I am a gamer who loves strategy - I am happiest when I am being mentally challenged by my games, and I strive to be smarter and faster than everyone else. I put more value in beating someone in Starcraft than I ever did in my kill/death ratio. However, I can say that while Portal 2 may not be for absolutely everyone, it undeniably deserves a place among the greatest games of all time. Mass Effect, Half-Life, Oblivion, KOTOR, Starcraft, Okami, Diablo, Ico, Bioshock, Doom, Grand Theft Auto, The Legend of Zelda: the list is long, and it has a new member. I am honored to have reviewed Portal 2, and look forward to playing it again tomorrow.
Giant Bomb (Apr 19, 2011)
Despite being so much bigger than the original, I actually felt a little melancholy once Portal 2 was over, simply because it's so rare to find a game this smart, this funny, and this rich with detail. It elevates Portal from an odd, memorable experiment to one of the most significant series in Valve's stable with a unique voice and an incredible level of quality that all developers should aspire to.
Game Watcher (Apr 19, 2011)
Portal 2 is the best Valve release to date, and one of the most refreshing, exciting and innovative games we've ever played. There's no doubt in our minds that numerous Game of the Year awards have now already been shotgunned, and with mighty good reason. If you thought the original Portal was a masterpiece, prepare to have your mind blown.
1UP (Apr 19, 2011)
There's so much I want to share with people, as well as so many things left to talk about, but doing so would spoil so much of the surprise and fun that is in this game. Suffice to say, Valve has managed to create a game that bests its predecessor in nearly every regard, and has demonstrated to the world that they still have what it takes to create a game that deserves the hype surrounding it. While it's unclear if we'll ever see GLaDOS or Chell again, this much is certain: Portal 2 is one of the best games of this generation.
GamesRadar (Apr 21, 2011)
Portal 2 couldn't be Portal, but it's the next best thing. It's a longer, funnier, more emotional plummet through Aperture's perplexing laboratory, and its meticulous detail, perfect pacing, and kinetic, mind-expanding puzzles make it a blazingly memorable experience. It's so damn memorable, already feel nostalgic about it.
DarkZero (Apr 22, 2011)
In conclusion, Portal 2 is a textbook example of how to make a great game, but nothing more. Its narrative focus robs the game of its predecessor’s quirky charm, but gives players a much stronger sense of purpose – medium-term objectives roll by at a steady pace, like Half-Life 2 without the boring bits – and there is still plenty of scope in discussing the psycho-sexual imagery of splattering a level with gel. Is this the last we will hear of GLaDOS? I doubt it, but I’m hoping she’ll now take some time out from her solo career to provide backing vocals in Half-Life 2: Episode 3.
Destructoid (May 21, 2011)
Portal 2 is, without a doubt, one of the best games ever made. It's a game that not only seamlessly blends puzzle and adventure elements together, but makes a name for itself as a true "comedy" game, where witty dialog and laugh-out-loud concepts have been given an equal billing with the gameplay itself. It's funny, it's challenging, it's inventive, and it boasts memorable moments that will stick in your mind and make your hair stand on end every time you think about them. Gaming simply does not get much better.
TotalVideoGames (TVG) (Apr 21, 2011)
Genius is an often overused word but Valve's work on Portal 2 is genius in the truest sense. The studio has exhibited exceptional creativity in the game, even compared to some of its other masterpieces. If we could give it 11/10, we would.
Game Critics (May 07, 2011)
So do we need Portal 2? Do I need it? Maybe not, but I'm sure as hell glad it exists. The portal aspect has probably reached its zenith in Portal 2, and given the way the game ends I don't think there's much room for a Portal 3. Indeed, I would say it's time for portals to branch their physics-defying awesomeness into other genres. Think of it—someday we critics might snarkily dismiss "run of the mill portals" as a mundane, outdated mechanic like key fetch quests or unskippable cut-scenes. However, in the meantime we can give Portal 2 the jubilant praise it so rightly deserves.
God is a Geek (May 04, 2011)
Quite simply, Portal 2 is a masterpiece. A lesson to every other developer out there on how to tell a story in a video game whilst executing every gameplay mechanic to perfection. Masterful writing, engaging characters, wonderful music, and so forward-thinking that it even includes cross-platform, cloud-saving play between Steam and the PlayStation 3. Utterly essential in every way, Portal 2 is going to be in everyone’s game of the year discussion when the time comes, and it damn well deserves every ounce of praise lavished upon it. Buy Portal 2, you deserve it.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Apr 19, 2011)
Portal is perfect. Portal 2 is not. It's something better than that. It's human: hot-blooded, silly, poignant, irreverent, base, ingenious and loving. It's never less than a pure video game, but it's often more, and it will no doubt stand as one of the best entertainments in any medium at the end of this year. It's a masterpiece.
Atomic Gamer (Apr 20, 2011)
Is Portal 2 a worthy successor to one of the most surprisingly lovable games in recent memory? I've tried to figure out a way to answer that simple question with any response other than a resounding "yes", but I'm completely incapable of it. With this sequel, Valve has ramped up the brain-cramping puzzle elements and expanded the cast with immensely lovable characters, and they did it just enough to make sure the whole thing feels fresh and interesting for the longer campaign. I think it's very likely that you'll come away with a huge smile on your face once you're done. Some PC gamers will wait until the inevitable Steam sale hits, but no matter what you pay for it, I'm betting that Portal 2 will completely pull you into its charming world and make you lose track of time for hours on end. Frankly, not many recent games have been doing that.
GameSpy (Apr 21, 2011)
Sporting some of the best writing and voice work in years (as well as some deviously designed puzzles), Portal 2's single-player campaign is superior to its predecessor in every way. It's the co-op mode, however, that makes this 2011's first must-play game -- even for those gamers that don't like first-person or puzzle games.
Game Revolution (Apr 21, 2011)
Impatience aside, Portal 2 is an exceptionally well-crafted, intelligent, entertaining, humorous game. You will laugh. You will feel like a freaking genius. You will want more. And yes, you will probably be hearing quotes from Portal 2 for the next three years.
Armchair Empire, The (Apr 28, 2011)
The reward of “finding” the story by listening to the voices of GLaDOS, Cave, and Wheatley and finding information in the environment makes for a very satisfying experience. Pile on the “Oh, yes!” moments of solving some really great puzzles, and there’s every reason to start thinking about Game of the Year accolades. It’s that good.
Adventure Gamers (Apr 29, 2011)
In the end, it’s hard to think of anything Portal 2 does wrong. It’s hard enough to think of anything it doesn’t do as well as it could have. Valve has taken the original premise and shown what they can do with a longer development time and a more polished, full-featured release. Portal 2 no longer relies on the same “short but sweet” simplicity that helped make the original such a classic, but it doesn’t need it. The sequel keeps varying both the style of the obstacles and the environments in which the puzzles are set at just the right intervals, so it never feels like you’re doing the same thing over and over. All the while, the consistent display of impressive voice acting and some of the funniest game writing ever leaves a lasting impression of these memorable characters and Chell’s ordeal. The addition of the superbly designed co-op campaign just adds yet another layer of brilliance on top of an already spectacular single-player experience.
Game Chronicles (Apr 25, 2011)
Portal 2 may be the best game of 2011. It may be the best game of all-time. It is certainly the best game you can play right now. I loved every moment I spent with Portal 2. I’m even enjoying looking at the game sitting on my shelf knowing how much fun I will have again someday when I revisit Aperture Science, alone or hopefully with a friend who may not have played the game. Portal 2 proves that you don’t have to kill things to make a great game and more importantly…science is fun!
XGN (Apr 27, 2011)
Hooked Gamers (Apr 23, 2011)
Disregarding the Robot Enrichment center – and I am actively disregarding it – Portal 2 has some of the most entertaining writing and voice acting of any videogame, ever. It has some of the most innovative and rewarding puzzles, ever. And it contains one of the best co-op experiences, ever. That is a lot of superlatives for one game – and all are seemingly unrelated. What a bizarre amalgamation. I mean, good writing, innovative puzzles, and engaging co-op – have those three things ever been in a game together? Good writing is only supposed to exist in role-playing games and the occasional first-person shooter. Innovative puzzles? Well, those are reserved for budget indie titles. And we typically only see engaging co-op in shooters, mostly violent ones. But Portal 2 has it all and is, simply put, phenomenal.
Vandal Online (Apr 21, 2011)
Gaming Target (May 03, 2011)
It's hard to sum up a game like Portal 2. It doesn’t have enough shooting to be a shooter, but it's not abstract enough to be a puzzle game. It's unique and challenging enough to attract the hardcore, but its offbeat humor and intuitive design will make it a hit with casual players. I'll forget about categories and call it what it is: the most original game in years (a big accomplishment for a sequel). It's also Valve's biggest console success. The game looks great on PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PS3, but the proverbial cake goes to the PS3 version, which comes with a free computer copy. On top of that, Portal 2 is that rare game with crossover multiplayer support, meaning PS3 players and computer gamers can portal it up together. That means if you have a laptop and a PS3, there’s no reason to play in cramped split-screen mode. That is, unless the PSN is still down by the time this goes up.
Overall, Portal 2 is (yet another) milestone pinnacle in design. It’s a near-perfect example of how an old dog can learn new tricks. I only hope that Valve can continue this level of professionalism with Half-Life 3 because a sequel to Portal 2 is implausible and unnecessary. Which is exactly what I said at the end of Portal 1.
Gameplanet (Apr 26, 2011)
If you can get the PC version, do so, as the combination of pricing and mouse control make the title just that little bit better. Portal 2 manages to exceed expectations without compromising any of the core gameplay that made the original so popular, and should easily be considered one of the best titles available so far this year.
Gry OnLine (Apr 22, 2011)
CPU Gamer (May 08, 2011)
To reiterate, Portal 2 is fantastic. Its single-player provides ample amounts of genuinely funny and compelling narrative and some great puzzles, while the co-op takes the game's mechanics and pushes them to their absolute, playable limit. You're only getting around 10-12 hours after delving into both halves of the game, but it's a concentrated thrill, where its weakest moments are still standards that most developers can barely reach in the first place.
GamingExcellence (May 04, 2011)
It's an excellent game. It is clearly a product of people who wanted to do more with the elements from the first title, and succeeded in every way. The world of Portal has expanded, the characters are given more depth, and the story pulls you back and forth in many unexpected ways with a climactic finale that might leave you breathless. Fantastic writing, excellent gameplay, and a level of polish and playtesting so high that you know it's got to be a Valve title, Portal 2 is simply a game that can not be missed.
PC Games (Germany) (Apr 19, 2011)
I thought Valve would have a tough time making this something other than Portal with a bunch of different levels, but I was very wrong. Without having the player fire a single bullet, it has produced one of the best FPS’s to date.
Meristation (Apr 19, 2011)
GamingXP (May 14, 2011)
Bit-Tech (Apr 20, 2011)
We can’t ignore that Portal 2 does have a few tiny issues, because it does and they are there. At the same time, we can’t focus on them too much. Portal 2 is a truly fantastic game, a worthy sequel in almost every way and a joy to play. It may not pack the surprise-factor of the original game – a fact which deprives GlaDOS especially of much of her early power – but it’s still just as fun, fast, funny and fantastic as we’d expect a second Portal game to be. It’s a game you should own and one you won’t regret picking up.
Softpedia (Apr 22, 2011)
Overall, Portal 2 manages to act as a worthy successor to the original Portal, retaining its core mechanics while adding quite a lot of new things and other great additions that enrich the puzzle solving experience. Portal 2 has a top notch story, an extremely smooth gameplay, from the single-player campaign to the co-op multiplayer, and will no doubt be regarded as a serious contender for the game of the year award at the end of 2011.
Game Informer Magazine (Apr 18, 2011)
Portal 2’s high points rival “the cake is a lie,” though they’re perhaps less quotable (which is honestly fine – repeating GLaDOS lines stopped being funny a long time ago). You’ll never forget the moments that accompany some of the achievements/trophies. The game’s quality stays consistently outstanding throughout; there isn’t a minute of filler content to be found anywhere in single-player or co-op. I would have loved to see something unique done with the story, which doesn’t end anywhere interesting despite a reasonably satisfying ending. I would adore seeing Portal stretch its wings beyond being a series of puzzles that almost always have one correct solution waiting to be found. That said, the next game I want to play is a second run through of Portal 2, because the existing formula is excellent and brilliantly executed.
FiringSquad (Apr 27, 2011)
Some say it took them only 4 hours to complete the single-player portion of Portal 2, while others say it lasted upwards of 8-10 and refuse to believe it could’ve been done any faster than 6. I finished in about 5 hours, and while I didn’t spend excess time poking around for easter eggs, I wasn’t rushing at all and enjoyed it immensely. The co-op levels were great fun, as well, offering 3 hours of diversion for myself and a capable partner. Just don’t expect much of a story from the co-op, or any real reason to play through that again until you forget how to solve the puzzles. Not only is Portal 2 well worth the price of admission, it’s the best game released so far this year and a serious contender for GOTY 2011. Just steer clear of the in-game storefront that wants to charge you $5 for a hat or $7.50 for glasses to wear on your co-op robot.
Absolute Games (AG.ru) (Apr 25, 2011)
games.mail.ru (Apr 22, 2011)
ComputerGames.ro (Apr 19, 2011)
The very short duration and lack of multiplayer were the most important shortcomings signaled by the community regarding its predecessor, so Portal 2 came to directly solve these problems, while at the same time further evolving the gameplay that was so beloved by millions of fans. If Portal was an experiment, a child who didn’t know if he’ll reach adulthood, Portal 2 can be seen as the teen years of the series. And if the evolution will continue in the same manner, I can’t wait to see what it will look like when he’ll be all grown up.
IGN (Apr 18, 2011)
The original Portal benefitted from its brevity. It had a concise story paired with inventive first-person puzzle mechanics that challenged you to be creative while pulling the trigger. Portal 2 makes the original look like the prototype it was. It's filled with a larger cast of characters vividly brought to life through brilliant writing and some of the best voice acting in video games. Its puzzles are challenging without being unreasonable, and, once you're finished with the single-player mode, one of the best co-operative experiences on the market awaits. Valve cuts no corners and finds ways to make you care about everything from the major characters to the cubes used to solve puzzles. From the beginning of the single-player story to the end of the co-op mode, Portal 2 is a novel, unforgettable experience.
ZTGameDomain (Apr 21, 2011)
Portal 2 is an outstanding sequel that did everything it needed to do to transition a bonus game into a full-fledged franchise. The series definitely has life in it and, if the developers continue to put this much love and effort into sequels, I could easily see it becoming one of the staples of the industry. If you enjoyed the original, this is a must-own title. If you enjoy puzzle games, go buy it now. Needless to say, I cannot recommend this game enough to anyone who enjoys a unique and entertaining experience.
Cheat Code Central (Apr 19, 2011)
Portal 2 is a strong contender for 2011's game of the year. If you loved the first Portal, you absolutely must pick this one up. And even if you're brand new to the series, Portal 2 includes groundbreaking gameplay, a collection of deep and nuanced characters, a completely insane story, and some incredible gaming moments you'll probably never forget.
If you enjoyed the original Portal, getting the sequel is a no-brainer. I have enjoyed the single and multiplayer campaigns thoroughly and can’t recommend this game enough. Even though the tests are similar in nature to the original game, the character development is what makes this sequel truly stand out. While my kids enjoy the original Portal, I’m a little hesitant on loading this on their machines due to the mild language. My kids are 6 and under so I’ll hold off until they’re a little older. After all, it is rated E10+.
Spazio Games (May 18, 2011)

A challenging, hilarious, and mind-expanding puzzle experience for one or two—treasure your first time through.
Valve's sequel is another fantastic display of no-filler design; gameplay is relentlessly imaginative and evolves seamlessly from effortless hurdle to mind-boggling physics test - and we'd throw ourselves through the ceiling for more. Imaginative, challenging, hilarious and sometimes a bit exhausting, Portal 2 is one of 2011's most interesting, challenging blockbusters. Just make sure you take your sweet, sweet time with it - because you'll probably feel a hole in your head once it's done and dusted.
ActionTrip (Apr 27, 2011)
Portal 2 is, in short, a terrific game, throwing you headfirst into a realm of intense and brain-teasing puzzles and great humor. The story is richer this time around too. The trademark Half-Life style atmosphere is there... we feel it, oh yes we do, as much as we felt the magic that made the previous Portal game so exciting to play. Things were spiced up with the robot-flavored coop mode, which we highly recommend to any gamers who are on the lookout for a decent challenge in addition to some serious giggling. Some may miss more competitive aspects such as leaderboards, but that doesn't mean they should sit this one out. If anybody had something bad to say about this game, well, don't be misled by it. You should buy this game. It's worth every penny.

YouGamers (Apr 27, 2011)
Portal 2 is a finely polished experience that you should not miss. It is also fairly short but ultimately that isn't the biggest issue - the chronic lack of challenge for those of us that already know how to "think with portals" is. A lot is saved by the excellent co-op mode but I weep for the missed opportunities. Still, you really can't have difficulty settings for puzzles and everyone has to be able to complete the game. Definitely a masterpiece, but could have been so much more.
GameStar (Germany) (Apr 19, 2011)

There's no real way around it, Portal 2 is simply one of the best games of this generation. It's creative, wonderfully detailed and most importantly, a complete blast to play. Valve has taken the formula from the original game and expanded upon it with a great follow up. To put it most simply, Portal 2 is not to be missed.
Thunderbolt Games (Oct 06, 2011)
There is little reason not to experience Portal 2, especially for fans of the original. The graphics may not be of the same caliber of other AAA titles, and the story may falter from time to time, but those are paltry excuses not to experience one of the best current generation games around.
Factornews (May 03, 2011)
MMGN (Apr 21, 2011)
At its core, Portal 2 very much feels like a science experiment where you’re the test subject. It holds nothing back, particularly with its dark and dry humour, and expands on mechanics and physics that helped define the original. Dark, mysterious, funny and entertaining, Portal 2 will challenge you in all the right ways.
Edge (Apr 19, 2011)
Portal 2 delivers, and it does it in style, creating one of the most meticulously designed, thrilling and delightful playgrounds we’ve ever seen. It’s a game with a magical take on momentum, where single bounds over tall buildings are business as usual, where every surface is a potential launchpad, and the entire experience is a belly laugh. Valve has a pretty good record with the number two, but attempting to inflate Portal’s perfectly formed package could easily have been a disaster. Naturally, the sequel doesn’t feel as bracingly fresh as the 2007 game, but it’s precisely the sort of dizzying follow-up the original deserves.
Wired (Apr 21, 2011)
Portal 2 is in the business of defying players’ expectations. Valve never wants you to predict what’s going to happen at any moment, and delights in subtly setting those pins up and knocking them down. Even more than the clever gameplay mechanics and sharply written story, the smiles and laughter that such a carefully crafted game can extract from you mean this one will stay with you for years to come.
Gamereactor (Germany) (Apr 19, 2011)

Portal 2 on loistava taidonnäyte Valvelta.
Gamers Daily News (Apr 20, 2011)
Valve will continue to make Portal titles because they are fantastic. Portal 2 offers unique gameplay not experienced in any other game; it is funny, exhilarating and challenging.
Games On Net (Apr 20, 2011)
If there’s a bad mark on Portal 2’s amazing score sheet, it’d be the fact that this is in every sense of the word a sequel: anybody jumping straight into this game without knowledge of what happened in or how to play the first game, would quickly find themselves on the receiving end of some mercy-killing neurotoxin. Portal 2 is dense and rich in both flavour and complexity, but it only really works as a companion piece to the original game and relies heavily on you caring deeply about the prequel events. If the original game didn’t really grab you, this isn’t a sequel that’ll “fix all the mistakes” and make a believer out of you - this is a game for the fans, and nobody else. That said, if you are one of those fans: this is the game you’ve been waiting for. It’s bigger, better and smarter in nearly every way, with the same ingenious puzzle design and signature Valve quality that make it a pleasure to play. Don’t miss out on what is easily one of the funniest, most clever games of 2011.
GameZone (Apr 19, 2011)
Portal 2 is pure genius. With gameplay growing ever more addictive and new characters always threatening to steal the spotlight, Portal 2 is one of the best games of 2011. A perfect and true sequel to the 2007 hit, Portal 2 provides everything that a fantastically designed sequel needs. The graphics and style are noticeably better, the writing is top-notch, the gameplay is as enthralling as before, the developer commentary keep players entertained, and the rest is tied nicely together with beloved characters. With “still alive” quotes and cake references kept to a minimum, Portal 2 steps the franchise out from the small tech demo with a neat story and into a work Valve can proudly place next to its Half-Life franchise.
Gamer.no (Apr 19, 2011)
VicioJuegos.com (May 04, 2011)
GamingBolt (Apr 20, 2011)
Portal 2 is a creative and engaging little slice of gaming heaven that can truly appeal to all kinds of people. It is one of the best games I have played all year, and it will probably become one of your favourites soon enough if you give it a chance. If you are concerned about value for money then, by all means wait for a price drop. The moment that price hits a level you’re comfortable with though, make sure you purchase it. Portal 2 is a game that you will not regret playing in any sense of the word.
GamingEvolution (Jun 20, 2011)
What they say about sequels not holding up the original is often enough true, however it doesn’t apply to Portal 2. Everything about Portal 2 is “bigger and better” than the original. You can clearly see that the developers made sure to keep the core of the gameplay from Portal intact, while enhancing every bit of the experience into a deeper, more fulfilling experience for Portal 2. With 2-player co-op and cross-platform gameplay thanks to Steam being brought over to the PS3 console, Valve is essentially “changing the game” and we all thank them for it. Whether you pick up the Xbox 360, PC or PS3 version of the game, you will have a rich and rewarding experience seldom few bring to the table.
GameSpot (Apr 19, 2011)
As you journey through the massive Aperture facility, it becomes clear that Portal 2 does not merely come after Portal. Instead, it radiates outward from its predecessor, simultaneously illuminating the world that gave rise to Portal and continuing the adventure that began there. The sense of novelty is diminished, but the thrill of exploration and puzzle-solving is still intoxicating, and it's amazing how Portal 2 manages to tell a better story with disembodied voices and spherical robots than most games can with full-on humans. Your return to Aperture Science is a joyful one in this immensely appealing, laugh-out-loud funny, and thoroughly satisfying sequel.
Worth Playing (Apr 20, 2011)
Portal 2 is more of the same, but only in the best of ways. Valve didn't mess with a winning formula, and the end result is that Portal 2 is a better game than its excellent predecessor. It keeps the same witty humor and high-quality level design but adds a few new tricks to turn the interesting puzzles into exceptional ones. The co-op campaign is a boatload of fun and adds extra value to the package — especially if you're a PS3 owner, who gets the PC/Mac version along with the console copy. Portal 2's only problem is that it's a hair short and lacks replay value. Despite this, it's some of the best gaming I've had in recent memory, and it still manages to be worth the full price. If you remotely enjoyed the original Portal, you'll absolutely love the sequel.
Gamereactor (Norway) (Apr 19, 2011)
gamrReview (Apr 19, 2011)
Portal 2 is one of those rare games that makes its predecessor completely obsolete. There are more puzzles, more characters, better graphics and sound, more variables in the puzzles, and a surprising story that went above and beyond my expectations. Unfortunately, once you’ve beaten both campaigns, there’s nothing left to do. Even with that shortcoming, however, Portal 2 is one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I’ve had for quite a while.
Gamers.at (Apr 18, 2011)
Game Shark (Apr 25, 2011)
Ultimately, the biggest problem with Portal 2 is Portal 1, which was a lean mean meme machine driven by one of videogaming's most unforgettable characters. So when the sequel has a minor negative space problem, and closes with a credit sequence that I can't hum for the life of me, is Portal 2 ever so slightly disappointing, or was Portal 1 just flat-out ingenious? I suspect a little of both. But with this much awesome Stephen Merchant, and with my status as a frickin' genius puzzle solver reaffirmed, and with a unique co-op experience, it's like complaining that I was promised the moon and the stars, but I only got the moon.
Level 7 (Apr 19, 2011)
Gamer Limit (Apr 27, 2011)
Does Portal 2 outshine its predecessor? That’s a difficult question to answer. It is a longer, fuller experience to be certain, but having previously seen and experienced what made Portal so interesting and unique, Portal 2 doesn’t quite feel so new or exciting. Some frustrating decisions and an underwhelming second act aside, the central premise is as brilliant as ever and Valve has enough tricks up their sleeves to keep it challenging, interesting, and hilarious as always.
All things considered, Portal 2 is one superb offering. I’m glad I bought it, and I really enjoyed playing it. From the tone of this review, you might’ve gotten a sense that I’m not really hyperventilating over its awesomeness, but that’s only because we all knew it was going to be great. It’s still quite awesome, though, and definitely a game that everyone should play. If, for some reason, you haven’t played the original, drop everything and go get both games; you’re missing out on some of the best experiences that gaming has to offer. Portal veterans who are tight on cash at the moment might want to grab the second installment on sale, or wait for a permanent price drop. But make no mistake—skipping Portal 2 should not be an option for you.
GameCola.net (May 02, 2011)
In spite of all this, I’m going to say what we’re all thinking: Portal 2 is the most fun you can have on your PC till someone invents a way that it can transform into a laser-firing sexbot with Bill Nye’s voice. The game is fun, the characters are still great, and overall Valve did try their best in bringing Portal to the AAA market. While it has some flaws, it’s still a testament to the level of artistic direction games need.
Mana Pool (May 09, 2011)
In the end, Portal 2 is a triumph. It’s a step forward for comedic writing in games. It presents a whole slew of new mechanics to play around with. It’s smooth and sleek, and a representation of how great Valve are at crafting games. They took a working formula and made it more than just a demo, with smarter humour and smarter puzzles. In a word, it’s genius. Though maybe not always in a good way.
Gamekult (Apr 26, 2011)
For it’s puzzles and ingenuity in the main game I give it an A, for the needless rewrite of GlaD0S’ character and the implied fate of every other digital character by proxy, I give the game a B, but for the shameless profit shakedown that this game is covertly carrying out in every other respect… a D. That averages this could-be great title into a paltry C. I know that’s not going to win me any friends, but I call it like I see it.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun (Apr 19, 2011)
There’s so much more I want to tell you! I want to tell you about the [REDACTED] turrets that [REDACTED] creates. I want to tell you about the sequences in the [REDACTED] from the [REDACTED]. Gosh, I want to tell you about the bit at the end with the actual [REDACTED]. I want to explain the whole potato thing to you! I think if I did I’d write something that better conveyed the exciting reasons to play. But something that would make playing far less exciting. Apart from that brief saggy moment toward the end of the second act, this is a refined, ludicrously detailed, and wonderfully smart game. At around eight hours long for the single player, it’s also nearly three times longer than the original, with another six or so hours for the co-op. Of course you should get it. In fact, you should have been reading this while your pre-load was unlocking.
