Edutaining Kids (Nov, 2003)
This game is comparatively easy to complete, although it is not without its small challenges--perfect for children ages 6-7 and great for children ages 3-5 who have some help from parents or older siblings.
Quandary (Oct, 2003)
Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise is vibrant and colourful with a collection of equally colourful characters to meet on the journey. It's a worthy challenge for pre-schoolers and a particularly good game choice for a young first time adventure game player.
Review Corner (2003)
Gameplay is similar to previous Putt-Putt titles except that there is an auto-save option that makes saving games a little easier. The graphics are fun and cartoon-style, although not as impressive as we expected. Our main problem with the game is a design issue that detracts from overall enjoyment--children need to use keyboard controls to skip lengthy sequences. In older editions, children could press the Escape key to bypass instructions or character speech. This latest game requires two different keyboard controls: the Enter key skips through the current sequence, while the spacebar allows children to cut off current character speech. It is a little tricky, and if players don't read the manual to discover this "trick", the process is not intuitive.
KidZone (Nov 10, 2003)
Fans of Putt-Putt will enjoy his latest adventure, and parents will enjoy watching their children succeed at helping Putt-Putt put on a great party. Best for kids who like repetition, as the randomization doesn't change the game very much.
Common Sense Media (Jan 23, 2004)
Kids enjoy playing Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise because they feel like they are inside an animated cartoon. They move the story forward only by using important problem-solving and memory skills. Putt-Putt is so polite and thoughtful that he makes a great role model for kids.
7Wolf Magazine (Jan 27, 2004)
