Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches is an absolutely excellent example of the quality that can be achieved by a small team of developers and artists. In this case, we really are talking small, as there are only three developers, and only twenty people credited for the entire production. That even includes all the beta testers! The game is original in its choice of story, enjoyable in its detail, challenging in its puzzles, technically rock solid (and Alt-Tab friendly), and, hopefully, a sign that there is much more to come from Arberth Studios.

Overall, there is much to admire in this twisty story, its shivery environment, and its puzzles that spark curiosity. Although I usually hope for lots of face-to-face character interaction in an adventure game, the in-game documents and voice messages are well crafted substitutes in this case. The interface often leaves me taking the wrong turn or wondering why I may not use my keyboard (maybe I am aging prematurely!), yet it does become quicker with familiarity. The variety of character ages and the absence of gore also help to give this game a broader appeal. Nothing bloodcurdling happens in the story’s present (except considering the perspective of mice dragged in by the Sullivans’ cat), yet the sense of menace is there. The game is therefore suitable to play for even younger gamers.

Despite the aforementioned concerns - navigation, graphics, lack of self-reflection - Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches is a very fine game and one I would encourage adventure game lovers to play. The milieu of Welsh legends is unusual within a game, and offers information we don’t often see. The overall story is intriguing, complex and detailed, with excellent writing. Progression is logical, with thoughtful transitional clues and sensible, though often quite hard, puzzles. When reviewing a game, I look at length of play, and was surprised that I’d spent 25 hours. It was fun, challenging, fascinating, with time flying by.

In spite of a few missteps, Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches is a good-looking, entertaining and well-made game, especially considering the size of the dev team. It's the perfect title for people who dig history, mystery and the paranormal, not to mention people who like to think when they game.

Despite agonizing movements and getting lost a lot, it’s a joy to play — and experience. It excels when things are dark and quiet. Puzzles are somehow more intense ... the more quiet things get. Clues are sometimes unique and unexpected, while the false leads don’t feel like a waste of your time. Everything you encounter is fun. Frequent pauses to save the game are prudent. I found that returning to play the game was like an event for me. I had to have everything just right, but once I began, the game takes over and puts you in the right mood, easily. It took me longer than it might others, but I rarely delve into this genre much. The recent Dracula: Origins game was similar in visual ability and scope, but both are equal in compensation. What Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches lacks in people-skills, it more than makes up for in enriching experience and keeping the mood. Now if I could just get that whispering voice out of my head.

GameSpot (Oct 29, 2008)
Dated production or not, Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches sends chills up your spine as effectively as a good old-fashioned story about a haunted house. The measured pace and emphasis on painstaking exploration demands patience, however, so you have to put a fair bit of time into the game and let it get under your skin.

Overall, I fully recommend this game on the merits of its worthwhile storytelling, puzzles, and immersive environment. I look forward to seeing more great games come out of Arberth Studios!

With its slow pacing and detailed puzzles, Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches is definitely a game for confirmed adventure fans rather than casual players, but aside from the spookiness factor being somewhat hampered by the low budget aesthetics, the story does a great job of pulling you in thanks to its intimate nature and everyday setting. A minor gem, but a rough one to be sure.

Still, things do pick up later on and there’s a relatively rich and varied amount of material to sift through as you progress, especially if you find Celtic myths and legends of interest. So, if you can get over the extremely slow pace of the gameplay, you might find a relaxing-yet-spooky adventure to immerse yourself in on a wet Sunday afternoon.

Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches is something of an acquired taste; it's definitely not the best introduction to adventure games but if you're a fan of the genre and you don't mind a slow moving and isolated experience, then you're likely to find the story intriguing and the puzzles logical yet complex enough to bestow a sense of satisfaction when you solve them. It's an admirable debut effort for a small developer, but the jarring movement transition, ease with which you can miss an item or area, complete lack of journal to note key locations/items and give you some hints as to what you should be doing, along with the total absence of other characters with which to interact, are significant flaws that will be enough to turn some gamers off, especially when combined with the meandering pace.

Rhiannon is a promising debut offering from a small development team, but a strong storyline is let down by the game’s uninteresting environments and basic presentation.

Between Rhiannon’s controls, graphics, and sound problems, it just becomes a chore to play. The temptation to abandon it during even the slightest bit of difficulty can be very strong. Adventure enthusiasts may be able to squeeze some fun out of Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches, but most players would be well advised to stay away.
