After the dust from the 3rd world war had settled, a space station was found orbiting Saturn. A scientist, member of the Robot Exploration Squad, is sent to investigate it.

Robot Exploration Squad is a 2D metroidvania game. The player controls a robot suit sent to explore the space station. At the beginning, the robot suit is only equipped with a simple gun to destroy the station's hostile inhabitants, but as the game progresses new upgrades must be collected to make new areas accessible. The upgrades include a hacking device to access the station computers, better weapons, better armor, a sword attack, higher jumps, faster movement, the ability to grab and move blocks, protective boots and the full map of the station. The plasma rifle mounted on the robot suit shoulder can shoot in 8 directions. There is a command for making the robot suit stand still while shooting, allowing for precision aiming. There are separate commands for shooting, using the sword, jumping and ducking.

The game map is divided in rooms connected to each other by doors that must be shot to be opened. Some rooms hold coins which can be used to buy new equipment in a market. Some other rooms hold bosses, who will give access to new upgrades. There are also teleport stations that allow for fast traveling around the map. The player will also find healing and save stations. The game can only be saved in those stations and there are 4 separate save slots.
