Available in English, French and German, The Saga of Ryzom enjoys a friendly and mature community. Ensuring good communication between players and developers is a key priority, so both can work hand in hand.

In the end Saga of Ryzom is an enjoyable game that allows players to develop their characters however they wish. With its clean graphics, interesting game world, and innovative skill system Ryzom is definitely going to be one of the more interesting games in the new crop of online games that are hitting the market. Will it win the hearts of the online community over the new EQ2? Will it beat out Blizzard's World of Warcraft? I don't know the future, but I can tell you that Ryzom is definitely worth a good look if you are hunting for the next big game.

Combining science fiction with fantasy can be peanut butter and chocolate or raw horseflesh ice cream. Fortunately, France-based Nevrax is closer to the former with its new entry into the MMORPG genre. The Saga of Ryzom is set on Atys, a strange living world now being repopulated by the refugees of four races who all but disappeared after a war with Kitins, an odd race of intelligent insect-like creatures. It's one of the more enticing persistent-world games to come out in some time, and it shouldn't be overlooked by anyone craving a MMORPG to sink their teeth into.

The Saga of Ryzom has been out for over a year now, and it's time to take another look at the game after such a long time. A lot can change for a game in a year and Saga of Ryzom is no exception. Ryzom has seen many ups and downs, but who knows what the future will bring?
IGN (Oct 18, 2004)
The game has an awesome art style to it, and there's lots of character to the beasts--they'll run up to you and sniff around, sit around and scratch itchy places, forage, scamper, take naps, etc.--but the scope feels too ambitious for a developer with only Ryzom on its resume. (You may recall that Dark Age of Camelot had seemed to have come out of nowhere, but Mythic had actually done over a dozen online games before that, albeit on a smaller scale.) I think The Saga of Ryzom has the potential to turn into a real contender, but not until they smooth out player introduction, get some more players on board (a Catch 22, granted), take care of network lag, and introduce quests to make gameplay more rewarding and better paced overall.

The sad fact of Ryzom is that it is a great game that has deserved so much more but unfortunately has not received the attention so desperately needed. The progress of the game over the last few years, aside from one or two events, hasn't amounted to much as no real new content has been added. While on a purely gaming basis I can unreservedly recommend Ryzom, as an MMORPG I cannot, the game simply does not have the required numbers to really make the game enjoyable and worthwhile. As I write this I feel a sense of conflict as my words could condemn the game even further but the truth is, Ryzom is a very empty, under populated game and unfortunately a lot of the content on offer seemingly would make use of a higher body count. To close; if you can cope with the low population, give Ryzom a try, you may find something you adore.

And even though The Saga of Ryzom may be error free in six months, those behind it are not absolved of the transgression of pushing an incomplete product into the market. Their penance may well be to watch an exodus of paying players who have better things to do than wait for Nevrax's redemption. In a market that has a number of alternatives and some highly anticipated titles on the horizon, Nevrax's handling of the initial months of The Saga of Ryzom will certainly have more impact on the face of Atys than the actions of those playing could ever hope to. Here's hoping that impact is a positive one, for it would be a shame to see such a beautiful, promising game world shrink to insignificance before the massive branches of Atys are allowed to take proper root.
Just RPG (Oct 27, 2004)
If I had to give it a score right now, it would be around the 70% mark, because I personally like the premise and some of the mechanics but there is still quite a bit of work to be done. If Nevrax can deliver the content promised in Patches One and Two while addressing most of the current annoyances or holes in the features list, I have no doubt that the game could easily reach the 80% mark or more. The developers no doubt keep in mind that promises will need to be acted upon to keep lots of players from migrating to the latest big thing once the next big online contenders are released. Tune in in a few weeks for our full review update to see how Saga of Ryzom is evolving.
GameStar (Germany) (Dec, 2004)
The only thing missing from Ryzom’s customizable battling, harvesting, and crafting systems is a lack of bothersome bugs.
GameSpot (Oct 26, 2004)
The friendly player community partially compensates for these flaws, and can help new players adjust to the game, but it's difficult to justify enduring Ryzom when there are currently so many better alternatives. In many ways Ryzom seems like a throwback to the first generation of MMORPGs, since it seems to have more in common with the first Asheron's Call than, say, this year's City of Heroes. If some of its more innovative features, such as the Kitin raids and guild quests, ultimately figure more prominently in the gameplay, then Ryzom may merit another look, but currently it's a disappointment.
