Just Adventure (May 12, 2010)
I am still ticked off at Telltale for deviously dumbing down the puzzles in all their games, but the quality, inventiveness and cleverness on display in this episode are undeniable. Now how about a “hard play” button for those of us who still like to solve instead of “experience” adventure games? Oh, well, just another losing battle, I suppose. Grumpiness aside, I must give this newest S&M effort a well-deserved A.

The Freelance Police have settled into their ancestors' skins almost better than into their own. The reel question: how will the next episode manage to top this winning performance?

I enjoyed the first episode of this season a lot, and while the introduction of Max's powers might have felt a bit gimmicky at first, it really opened up a new avenue of puzzles to solve. The Tomb of Sammun-Mak builds upon those same avenues, and adds even more. Even if you only felt mildly amused by the previous episode, you will want to download this second one because it makes up for any shortcomings you may have felt about this season.

Most of the issues with the game are rather small and can be easily ignored, like the load times throughout that could simply be patched out later. The Tomb of Sammun-Mak is simply one of the most enjoyable adventure games that has come out in recent memory, and is a very easy recommend to anyone with a computer. Keep in mind that this is only the second episode in a series and it alone makes the season worth the asking price.

If somehow you are still on the fence on whether to purchase the new Sam & Max season, seriously, jump on over. Even if you are just slightly into adventure games, The Tomb of Sammun-Mak is sure to entertain, both creatively and comically for an extremely affordable price.

With the usual snappy dialogue, hilarious set-pieces and some genuinely brilliant puzzles to wrap your ailing brain around, it looks like Telltale has hit a rich vein of form.

HonestGamers (May 30, 2010)
The chaotic pace of a game bitch-slapping a continuous time-line is brilliantly in keeping with Sam & Max’s unpredictable sense of humour. There are still control issues in how the game insists upon an uncomfortable mouse-drag/WASD set-up to move around (a set-up vital for its iPad port) but it manages to pick up pace from what was already a fantastic start. It’s worth noting that, back in the founding chapters of Telltale’s reinvention of Sam & Max, one of the biggest complaints levelled at the episodic series was the constant rehashing of backdrops. The Tomb of Sammun-Mak is a game built completely off totally original locations.

Defunct Games (Jul 16, 2010)
The Tomb of Sammun-Mak shows just how ambitious Telltale Games plans on being this season. With a unique narrative structure and a story that actually fills in a lot of back story, this second episode of The Devil's Playhouse is a real winner. And don't forget about the twist ending you'll never see coming!

I am sure that you know what you are letting yourself in for by playing this. There is about 6 hours of good natured entertainment to be had and I cannot think of a better way to spend this time. If you have yet to play episode one of The Devil’s Playhouse, it may be worth going there first, just for continuities sake. Not that there is anything stopping you from jumping straight into The Tomb of Sammun-Mak. It will still be just as gloriously confusing.

You have to give Telltale high marks for creativity. So far, Sam & Max Season 3: The Devil’s Playhouse has featured solid attempts to alter the usual way that adventure games unspool. The Tomb of Sammun-Mak could be too tricky for its own good, and there are sloppy bits here and there, but it’s a fine second chapter in the current five-episode season.

Adventure Corner (Jun 15, 2010)

The freelance police are beloved characters, and Telltale Games is good at telling tales. Together, they make for a dynamic partnership and a fun game. Max's ever changing psychic powers are a welcome change. The game ends with yet another cliffhanger that will peak the curiosity of any fan of Sam & Max as to where this season is heading. Wherever that is, it will for sure be fun!

There was also some disappointment for me in the ending – as in the very, very ending. After the dramatic events of the finale played out, it would have been nice to see a short reaction back in modern times, but it's glossed over in favour of a cliffhanger that sets up the next episode instead. Without that last touch, the explanation given for the shocking discovery Sam & Max unearth at the beginning of this episode feels rather anti-climactic. Even so, it doesn’t overshadow what is otherwise another great addition to the Freelance Police line-up. The Tomb of Sammun-Mak may not quite hit the heights it could have reached, but it’s fun, it’s creative, and it thoroughly entertains. While other Telltale series have suffered a bit of a letdown after a promising start, The Devil’s Playhouse is shaping up to be a consistently entertaining season, any way you slice the cucumber.

There's a lot to like about this episode but my favorite part about it is that it actually gives us a bit of a break from the regular Sam and Max routine. The old-time style is a great change of pace for the series' visuals and the film reel mechanic offers an interesting approach to narrative. The puzzles and jokes are well done and, even though the cliffhanger resolution felt completely incidental, I'm definitely looking forward to what comes next.

Hooked Gamers (May 28, 2010)
Although the story is told out of chronological order, it is entertaining from start to finish, with a Lovecraftian final showdown and an ending scene that is both shocking and mildly gruesome. If the cliffhanger ending of The Penal Zone had you salivating for the next episode, The Tomb of Sammun-Mak is sure to make you feel that June just can't come soon enough.

Gameswelt (May 27, 2010)

In short, if you found the first episode even remotely fun, then the second episode will definitely prove to be worthwhile. But if the idea of cartoon humor and puzzle-based gameplay scared you away from the first episode, then again, buyer beware.

Telltale Games are fast becoming the biggest name in the adventure genre, taking old IPs and bringing them into the 21st century. You can see the growing confidence with which Telltale handles their scripts these days, as they have become one of the more experienced adventure game developers in the market today, and this is evident throughout the course of The Tomb of Sammun-Mak. While the game doesn’t host any standout moments, it is solid throughout and raises a fair few chuckles while providing a bit of a challenge as well. While the title won’t last beyond a couple of hours, once it is played in the context of the previous and upcoming chapters, you will have a solid gaming experience and I expect the next three chapters will continue the high standard set by the first two in the series.
