AceGamez (2007)
The quality and consistency of the writing, pacing and just plain fun contained in all six of the episodes is exemplary and all too rare these days, while the quality of the gameplay and characters, combined with the way the season unfolds neatly with each passing episode, is outstanding. Then there's the value - there are about twenty hours of game time in the season, but there is so much extra stuff crammed into each episode to keep you laughing while you replay! As I commented in a review, some items had the same comments and descriptions in a couple of episodes and then suddenly got new descriptions later in the season! It is enough to send you back clicking on everything just to see what has changed! Sam & Max are back and have erupted in a glorious (and violent) fashion that has gamers everywhere rejoicing and anticipating another excellent season of episodes of the adventure of the Freelance Police.
Just Adventure (Aug 22, 2007)
I recommend you buy the disk and play, especially if you were a fan in the heyday of the graphic animated adventure; but even if you are part of generation X, Y, or Z you can't miss the miss-adventures of this dynamic duo.
In the future when I talk about how great Purcell’s graphic novels are, or about how much I loved Lucasart‘s Hit the Road, I can now also add how Telltale‘s Season One outdid all my expectations and delivered a heart-warming, gut-busting reminder of past brilliance.
Factornews (Oct 30, 2007)
Your mileage with this game will probably be a function of your tolerance for traditional adventure game puzzles weighed against how well you click with the humor. I found most of the puzzles reasonable, and was relieved that I never once had to look up a guide to solve any of them. And in terms of comedy, it's been a long time since I've played a better-written game. For fans of adventure games, Sam and Max, or their general brand of entertainment, this collection is a treat.
Video Game Generation (Mar 01, 2008)
The episodic approach is interesting mainly because Telltale Games pulled it off wonderfully. Sam and Max Season 1 can function as six stand-alone episodes, though they make far more sense if they are played in order. It is possible to complete each episode in one sitting (realistic sitting, not a 12 hour marathon), and the time between episodes was short enough for the games to feel fresh and not get stale from too long of a wait. As a fan of the original game, I was afraid that the series wouldn’t retain the humor or the wit. Thankfully, Sam and Max Season 1 delivers both. Individually, the episodes would range between a 7.5 and 8.5. However, as a whole season, Sam and Max Season 1 brings a full adventure game to a genre that is starving for hits. The experience is funny, witty, amazing, and something that the gaming community could use more of instead of MMOs, shooters, and The Sims. As a whole, this package is up there with the Orange Box in terms of playability and value.
Game Chronicles (Sep 04, 2007)
Sam & Max: Season One is the hysterical rebirth of one of gaming’s most beloved crime fighting duos. While I probably wouldn’t have got sucked into the whole pay-per-episode thing on GameTap, having the entire season at my disposal on a single disc all at once makes owning and playing this series a no-brainer.
Quandary (Aug, 2007)
All in all it's a light hearted romp through a wacky world populated by some equally wacky characters. So if you're in the mood and on the same wavelength you'll enjoy Sam & Max Season One immensely. For me the humour worked a treat though it does reach down to some kiddies barfing gags at the end — tastefully done — honest! There's something here for everyone. Reality 2 with its role playing theme was the pick for me, but you can make your own pick and have a lot of fun doing it.
Priced at $29.99, Sam and Max Season One provides an extremely enjoyable game experience. All of its various parts, from its episodic format to its graphics and music, form a satisfying whole that provides entertaining gameplay even as it sparks hilarity. Any gamer looking to take a break from their usual fare should pick up a copy of Sam and Max Season One. Just don’t blame me if your roommates complain about your fits of uncontrolled laughter.
Game Over Online (Aug 06, 2007)
But overall, I found Sam & Max: Season One to be an excellent game. It is extremely well written and well acted, it looks just like a Sam & Max cartoon should, and its puzzles, while not overly complicated, at least make sense -- given the universe where you’re playing. So it’s easy for me to recommend Season One to you. If you like adventure games or comedies, then this is definitely a game you should buy. I can hardly wait for Season Two to appear.
Out Of Eight (Aug 28, 2007)
The game as a whole is engaging: the great graphics and wonderful sound design draw you into the gameplay, while the odd characters and interesting storyline keeps Sam & Max: Season One moving. The slightly demented sense of humor is appreciated, and most of the jokes work well without feeling forced. The controls are simple, although the driving mode is lacking and the basic controls don’t lend themselves to complex puzzles. An objective list would be nice, but the puzzles are uncomplicated enough where you don’t really need one. I’m not the biggest fan of adventure games, but I found Sam & Max: Season One fun and you should too. Since most of the tedium associated with adventure games has been removed, Sam & Max: Season One is a well crafted adventure game that will appeal to a wide audience.
PC Action (Germany) (Oct 24, 2007)
GamingTrend (Feb, 2008)
About once a year I break out the original Sam & Max: Hit the Road and fire it up. From the opening lines where Max asks “Shall I confront, subdue, and pummel the suspected perpetrator Sam?” I’m absolutely hooked all the way through to the end. Sam & Max: Season 1 certainly comes close to approximating that experience, even if a few episodes (e.g. Situation: Comedy) aren’t as brilliant as the final two episodes. All told you’ll burn through this title in about 15 hours, many of which you’ll be quoting to the chagrin of the non-gaming people around you. Also included in the package is a set of DVD commentary tracks. I’ve not watched all of them yet, but there are certainly several hours of inside information at the very least. If that isn’t enough, there are seven wallpapers with options from 800x600 to 1920x1200 in size, as well as 18 songs from the game. I can see this game being pulled out and played once a year next to Hit the Road once you’ve beaten it.

Cheat Code Central (Aug, 2007)
Lately, point-and-click adventures have not seen the same level of popularity they once enjoyed on the PC, but Sam & Max is a wake-up call aimed at reminding players there's still life left to the genre, despite many claims to the contrary. The game looks good and plays well, but the voluminous humor and interesting characterization alone are well worth the price of admission.

GameZone (Aug 27, 2007)
It’s everything it should be: great humor, great dialogue and funny stories. Sam & Max are as nutty as ever, and their takes on current cultural icons are very humorous. The puzzles aren’t very difficult and could be more challenging, but on the whole, this is a great game for anyone, and families with teens should especially consider it.
Armchair Empire, The (Aug 23, 2007)
I have no hesitation recommending anyone and everyone pick up the retail version of Sam & Max: Season 1. It’s accessible, funny and full of personality – my kind of adventure game.
GameStar (Germany) (Sep 26, 2007)
One of the best adventure games got a “sequel” that manages to live up to the heritage. A must buy for all the adventurers out there.
Adventurespiele (Sep 16, 2007)

Adventure Gamers (Aug 30, 2007)
Characters as adored as Sam & Max are easy to mess up—making it all the more impressive that in both technical and creative aspects, Telltale got Sam & Max right, and the result is a delightful series of short games that could potentially have become one great lengthy game.
