Unlike the simple joy of firing an elastic band at someone, SS3 will not result in a possible lawsuit or being fired from your job, but that doesn’t mean that the player will escape unscathed. The gameplay doesn’t change much in Serious Sam 3, so there is a very real possibility of RSI after an extended gaming session. It is also easy to have feelings hurt by smack talk through the games competitive multiplayer. If you are of the more sensitive persuasion but still fancy being humiliated with friends, co-operative survival mode will keep you laughing until you die, which will happen quite quickly as the waves of aliens come quickly.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Dec 23, 2011)
Game Chronicles (Dec 23, 2011)
If you want a break from all the strategy, tactics, and realism of the recent batch of FPS games then return to the roots of twitch-gaming, arena combat at its finest with Serious Sam 3: BFE. With its awesome environments, outrageous creatures, powerful weapons, and insane level of challenging gameplay, there should be enough violent bloodletting to satiate the hardest of hardcore players.

SS3 will not be winning any graphics related awards this year but it does trump genre competitor Hard Reset’s overall looks. Gamepad support is included, but with the game being a reflex based experience, you won’t have much success the higher the difficulty ramps up. In the end, Croteam has surprised me a great deal. I didn’t expect Serious Sam 3: BFE to be so ridiculously enjoyable and visually appealing with a solid metal-inspired soundtrack to go with it. The intensity is there throughout and, with the exception of some brutal scenarios to overcome, it positions itself yet again as the top twitch shooter on the market.

Serious Sam 3

Serious Sam 3 does what it set out to do and nothing more. A faithful and heartfelt ode to old-school FPS carnage, it certainly delivers the dumb fun that Duke Nukem Forever so dismally failed to recapture - and that, for many retro-heads, will be more than enough. With robust HD remakes of the previous two games already available, however, Serious Sam 3 risks making itself redundant through a slavish adherence to the past.

Serious Sam 3: BFE is the latest game of 2011 to attempt to remind us of what shooters used to be like, before multi-million dollar budgets high-def makeovers. For the most part, it succeeds - it's wildly fun to take out monsters and watch their blood spill out on the floor (maybe that should be gush), but it's also a game that repeats itself long before it should. Serious Sam 3: BFE is a great game to play with friends over a few beers - as long as you don't expect too much from it.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Dec 09, 2011)
Serious Sam 3: BFE‘s rich multiplayer puts the series on firm footing after an uneven and at times dull single-player campaign. While not as imaginative as its predecessors, the mixture of antiquity and science fiction serves up some interesting, if familiar, settings, while the humor is goofy enough to be funny while not veering so far it lands in Duke Nukem: Forever territory (dated ‘All Your Base’ reference aside). Single-player nuts will want to approach this one with caution, but those with strong Internet connections can look forward to some chaotic good times. To quote one random co-op player: “madness!”

I can really only think of one down side to Serious Sam -- it costs $40. This is a game that provides hours of good, stupid fun, sure, but that just seems a bit steep for a game that's neither particularly novel nor very long from start to finish. So, if you happen to be reading this at some future date when Sam's price has been inevitably slashed to something a bit less zany, then congratulations, mysterious man from beyond tomorrow! You can go ahead and pretend that three-and-a-half star score is actually a five. Or you could check out the even cheaper, even older school Serious Sam: Double D.

In an age where first-person shooters have become first-person thinkers, a game that takes us back to the raw, gory roots of the genre and reminds us why we went all gaga over the concept in the first place is bound to succeed. And it does succeed, despite several rather notable blemishes. Serious Sam 3: BFE will ultimately exhaust its players by virtue of its screen-filling mega-confrontations, its non-stop repetition and the sense that you are almost always mercilessly outgunned. Sam 3 is good but could have been better. Hopefully others will take up the torch and run with it.
