Gaming Nexus (Dec 22, 2009)
This is first person shooting distilled to its purest and most action-packed form. Updated graphics, fun co-op, and a budget price tag join together to put this on any shooter fan's wish list.
Video Game Generation (Dec 28, 2011)
Though Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is an exemplary title for those looking to satisfy their craving for golden age shooters, the pace is not suited for everyone (especially newcomers). It’s a hardcore offering in an unbelievably simple package. The recreation here is so faithful that it’s difficult not to recommend the game to everyone in spite of that hardcore bent, especially given the achievements and multi-player support. If you’ve never partied with Sam before, now is the best time to start.
DarkZero (Jun 26, 2010)
The “HD” in the title isn’t just for show, as the colorful environments and re-textured models results in an eye-popping experience (filled with plenty of other explosive body parts). It may not measure up to the graphical splendor of today’s FPS games, but the real priority lies in the manic gameplay. The outside environments are quite large for a linear shooting experience, and oftentimes drag a bit with seemingly endless roads. Cutscenes have a tendency to drag as well, consisting of extended camera sweeps to point players in the right direction after an activated switch. The story is mercifully light and mostly relegated to database entries, while Sam’s growl-induced one-liners deliver just the right kind of cheese for a game like this. Sound becomes quite important at determining the kind of enemy lurking behind the corner, and you will grow to fear the howling cries of suicide bombers surrounding your screen.
Bit-Tech (Nov 27, 2009)
No matter how good the co-operative mode is or level design is (well, except for the obligatory sewer level) though, the game is still clearly let down by one flaw. There’s nothing new and aside from the graphic enhancements there’s no reason to prefer HD over the original. It’s a good game, but it doesn’t necessarily add up to being a really good purchase – and that’s really the major reason why we can’t recommend it without reservation.
Co-Optimus (Jan 19, 2010)
As with the original game, Sam is a bit short, though re-playability is high and recommended. The last battle of the game is an epic one not to be missed, and definitely best experienced with a friend. At $20 the game might be a tough sell, as if my memory serves me correctly, that's the price the original launched at. I think fans of the series and new comers alike will enjoy what the game has to offer; which is a chaotic bloody good time that looks absolutely gorgeous.
Destructoid (Nov 29, 2009)
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is a great purchase for both fans of the series and newcomers. Those who have grown up on modern shooters may find the primitive design and simplistic objectives a bit jarring, but the purity of the gameplay simply has to be respected. It looks really good for what it is, and the hardcore, old school shooting action is just as robust as ever. Whether you have a gaming PC or Xbox Live, it's highly recommended that you pick this one up. There are fewer examples of solid, instantly gratifying gameplay that you can buy for the money.
GamesRadar (Jan 14, 2010)
Everything we loved about the original game is here, and the nice price is almost reflected in the decent length. We do regret that there’s nothing new. Sure, there are longer cutscenes, the levels are slightly rearranged, and the graphics are lovely, but in 2010, we expect innovation from even our craziest shooters. This is just a touched up portrait of a lesser-known, much-loved ancestor.
Play.tm (Dec 03, 2009)
Serious Sam was a comforting sight in 2001, eschewing the then-modern developments of the genre to provide something refreshingly familiar to anyone who fell in love with PC gaming in the early nineties. Eight years later, with the modern FPS riddled with faux-military obsessions and regenerating health, the game still feels reassuringly nostalgic. It's just a shame we weren't given a little bit more. With Serious Sam HD, Croteam prove it's possible to remake them just like they used to.
GamingExcellence (Dec 09, 2009)
If you're a gamer who finds that modern FPS are too easy and want a challenge pick up Serious Sam HD. Mixing challenging encounters with interesting boss fights you really can't go wrong.
Armchair Empire, The (Dec 08, 2009)
If you're looking to revisit the Serious Sam franchise, or looking to add to your collection, or even if you've never played it before in your life, it's hard not to recommend Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter. Like I said before, this is the perfect example of how good games should be remade.
1UP (Nov 30, 2009)
Anyway, let's call a spade a spade and be done with it. This is a bargain-priced re-release of an older title. Did you always want to play the original, but forgot where you put the disc? Grab this puppy off Steam or XBox Live and have yourself a grand ol' time. But if you are into realism, refinement, cohesive plot structure, and/or crates, go blow your hard-earned cash on some pansy, frou frou FPS and quit wasting my time.
PAL Gaming Network (PALGN) (Dec 29, 2009)
Played it before or not, Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter belongs in every shooter's fan library for its brilliant throwback to older days when killing things was all we needed to do.
IGN (Dec 02, 2009)
Serious Sam doesn't try to be anything more than a gory, adrenaline-fueled shooting gallery. For many, that is all that is required for a good time. It does get repetitive, though. There are definitely cheap thrills to be had here but don't expect the substance that modern first-person shooters like Half-Life and BioShock offer. If you just want to kill some stuff, Serious Sam will certainly do.
AusGamers (Dec 01, 2009)
If you like your shooters easy to play, easy to digest and edge-of-your-seat by sheer number, Serious Sam HD will either spark some awesome memories for you (only these memories will be in HD), or you'll get a glimpse of why this series is so revered among old-school PC shooter fans. All I want now is SS3 - bring it on Croteam.
PC Games (Germany) (Jan 14, 2010)
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Nov 25, 2009)
If instead of removing the two-player split-screen mode that graced First Encounter, Croteam had bolstered multiplayer with some bold new modes (a versus or scarab collection mode might have been interesting) Serious Sam HD could, over the next few weeks, have dragged me away from L4D2 on occasions. As it is, for all the added beauty and inherited class, I don't think there's enough freshness or sophistication here for that to happen.
videogamer.com (Nov 25, 2009)
What needs to be remembered is that this isn't a brand new Serious Sam game, but the original in new clothes. As such it feels a little dated compared with modern releases. It's undoubtedly fun and relentless in its strive for all-out action, but with a recommended retail price of £18, it feels a bit light. For nostalgia alone, die-hard fans will get a lot out of this HD remake, but gamers who have been spoilt by current genre favourites will find Serious Sam HD a bit too simple for its own good.
Total PC Gaming (Dec, 2009)
It didn’t dare to do too much to the original material, and as such lines are angular and your field of view isn’t particularly busy, and incidental effects are few and far between. New models and animations for its various whacked-out enemy forces help things look marginally current, but the gameplay hasn’t shed its retro ‘floaty’ feel. While co-op multiplayer is fun for a couple of hours too, it just doesn’t offer the depth or creativity of execution the original content deserved. It’s great to have Sam back, but it hasn’t whet our appetite for Serious Sam 3.
GamingUnion.net (Nov 30, 2009)
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is a game that still performs quite well as a twitch-based first person shooter, but compared to some of the games released in recent times it's easy to feel quite underwhelmed by the whole experience. That doesn't mean it's bad though, and with the numerous enemies combined with up to 16 player co-operative matches, there's still a lot of fun to be had. It just feels like it's really showing its age, and while it's nice that the graphics have been improved, perhaps some of the other elements could have been tweaked too to help it integrate a bit better with today's standards.
Giant Bomb (Jan 27, 2010)
You'll be hard-pressed to find a purer, more panic-inducing FPS experience than Serious Sam.
Absolute Games (AG.ru) (Dec 09, 2009)
GameStar (Germany) (Nov 26, 2009)
In dezent hübscher.
Ja.
GameSpot (Dec 03, 2009)
Even if you're a serious lover of Serious Sam, it's impossible to recommend the HD remake of The First Encounter unconditionally. If you want a fresh hit of Sam Stone's insanity, you might be best off reinstalling the original game plus its sequels and save yourself 20 bucks. You'll miss out on the snazzy new graphics and a few extra frills, but you'll experience the majority of what the game has to offer. And you won't have to deal with the tech glitches that can make this new game more frustrating to deal with than a gang of kleer skeletons.
