It’s a great, difficult game that may piss you off, but you won’t think in two dimensions after playing for a few hours. For that alone, this game is worthwhile. It’s rare that a first person shooter offers such thought-provoking gameplay – Shattered Horizon does it just with game mechanics. Futuremark knows what they’re doing, and they’re doing it damned well.
We’re glad to see Futuremark has its feet on the ground in respect to price and to back up its value proposition it’s also promised – hand on heart – that Shattered Horizon will be supported long after launch with new levels and features made available via free downloadable packs. Gawd bless ‘em.

Gorgeous multiplayer shooting for the Vista/Windows 7 crowd.

What's Hot: Great graphics; unique gameplay; multiple ways to score a kill beyond charging an enemy with the mouse button taped down; freeform 360 degree movement controls work much better than you'd expect

What's Not: A little repetitive; no single player campaign mode; gorgeous graphics engine flips the bird to anybody not running Vista or Windows 7 with a DX10 graphics card
As far as first attempts go, I give props to Futuremark Games Studio. Aside from the heavy technical requirements, they have managed to fashion a fun online shooter with all the parts in the right places. For $19.99 it’s not badly priced, either, although after upgrading your PC to witness Shattered Horizon‘s full beauty, it could cost you a helluva lot more in the end.

Shattered Horizon is a great first title for Futuremark Games Studio and it has a lot of room to grow into a truly one of kind game that you won't be able to find anywhere else. At its price the lack of variety doesn't really hurt the title and their promise of a lot of additional content at no extra charge means that you'll be getting your money's worth.

Even though Shattered Horizons isn't quite all there at present, the shooter offers something new for multiplayer shooter fans despite lacking a few features. If Futuremark builds on this initial release with more maps and more modes of play, it could have a real hit on its hands. This is especially true given the fact that a fair number of people seem to be playing the game online in the early days after its launch.

Thunderbolt Games (Nov 13, 2009)
Shattered Horizon is an excellent game sold short by its own lack of content. What’s in the game is impressive, even beautiful; however, the fundamental fact is that there are only four maps and one gun to be had in the entire game. With the attention to detail found elsewhere, it’s strange that the game would ship with so little to do - with no campaign and so few arenas and weapons, Shattered Horizon almost feels like an expensive demo for something far greater. Still, the fact that the gameplay that is available is absolutely fantastic counts for a lot. Shattered Horizon is a game that needs fleshing out, but it’s worth playing for a glimpse of the stars the developers were clearly aiming for.

Overall the product here is of high quality, and it's rare to find such a high-end game gearing to such a dedicated crowd. But because of the quality of the game, I also think this is Futuremark's biggest failing - Shattered Horizon should be made more readily available and expanded upon. More multiplayer modes, a single-player mode (even if it's light on details, it would go a long way to teaching newbs how to outmanoeuvre the dudes ripping it up right now) and potentially something in the console space (please do not take that for advocating the PC vs Console debate, I'm thinking of cash money for the developer to expand upon their great idea). But, even sans all of the above, I can't help but love the game, even if it's to log into an empty server and just roam around the amazingly crafted levels, this is well worth your time and investment if you're any sort of FPS nut. Oh, and if you like anything spacey, it's an added bonus.

I have to stress that there is a good deal I like about this game. I know that a small army of FPS-space folk are going to get a huge kick out of it, but there's simply not enough to genuinely recommend it to the world at large. There's too much else out there in the world of contemporary shooters for Shattered Horizon's unique game-world to deliver an essential purchase.
