Main menu - the background only shows the sea in various weather settings.
thumbnail
The San Francisco bay area is new for SS2008. Hydrojet - Jetski, one of the new vehicles for SS2008.
thumbnail
loading San Francisco bay area, each area has a different background.
thumbnail
The GUI control bar are at the lower right. The top bar shows speed and other details. Mini-map is on top right. Top left icon shows your selected ship. Power & direction is on the lower left.
thumbnail
A jetski can turn pretty tight, but there is hardly any water spray.
thumbnail
There is a skippers view of course. For some ships you can see your avatars body. (This one has feet!). Not all ships show the players body, even if passengers are seen.
thumbnail
At over 50 knots, this ride is hard to control, and the jetski flies sometimes even in the relatively calm weather.
thumbnail
A familiar view from various TV shows, the Alcatraz prison island. I bet the inmates would have liked this getaway ride.
thumbnail
The San Francisco city is well built up, but hard to visit as you have to stay on the water.
thumbnail
This is the business end of the SF bay, lots of heavy cranes and large ships.
thumbnail
The map rose shows where you are with optional ships, depths and buoys displayed when you zoom in close enough. Waypoints can be placed on an overlay.
thumbnail
There is a built-in screenshot function, that looks like this when taking a shot (but the screenshot itself is clear)
thumbnail
You sometimes can beach your ship, but you can't get far even in a hovercraft, there are invisible walls blocking your progress.
thumbnail
Another area new to SS2008: New York The ship chosen is a Pioneer pilot boat, also new to SS2008.
thumbnail
A well-known mademoiselle in the area loading screen.
thumbnail
A smaller boat like this is pretty fast to get around in.
thumbnail
There is a walk-around view as well, but on a small boat there is not much to see other than the cockpit.
thumbnail
Captains view. The GUI can be almost completely hidden, except for the lower right bar, but then you have to try and watch the instruments directly..
thumbnail
When you get close to the edge of an area, you get a warning pop-up, to let you turn back, if you don't wish to reset or leave to another area.
thumbnail
Not all computer-controlled ships are as nicely textured as your own. But many move about, and need to be avoided. They can't sink, but your ship (optionally) can, if you collide.
thumbnail
Some buildings are well detailed, and try to look like the real thing. (Didn't I see that full-rigger in SF bay as well?)
thumbnail
Helicopters on static display only.
thumbnail
The lady in the lake?
thumbnail
Night time does not offer any pretty city lights, apart from the stars.
thumbnail
If you continue past the end-of-area warning, you will get a globe with all available locations to choose from, just select one dot to go there.
thumbnail
Another area new to SS2008: the Solent. Each area has descriptive text to it. (In case one does not know this area is in Britain.)
thumbnail
Each ship also has a descriptive text, this is for the hovercraft Freedom 90, a passenger ferry.
thumbnail
The marked spots are the starting points allowed. There are limits by ship size, you can't place a supertanker in a small marina.
thumbnail
Also the weather needs configuring. There are default presets in the right panel, and additional corrections can be made on individual sliders in the left panel. Time flows normally.
thumbnail
Solent area loading screen, the ship seen is not the selected one now, but it is in the game, a car ferry named Red Eagle.
thumbnail
This is the hovercraft ferry selected, the Freedom 90.
thumbnail
Helm position, lets hope the s**t won't hit the fan when we turn it on.
thumbnail
An empty passenger cabin. This is the only walk-around area on this ship, not much to see. In a mission, there should be passengers, hopefully, or this venture will fail.
thumbnail
An old fortification. The air vents at the front are angled left, I'm sliding right to avoid a collision. The fan controls on lower left has a turn knob for directing the vents.
thumbnail
Old Portsmouth and the Spinnaker Tower
thumbnail
A container ship in Marseilles, ADF Vermaas. Both a new location and a new ship for SS2008.
thumbnail
This is a large ship. Marseilles is deep in the hazy background, this ship won't fit in no marina, so we start on the outskirts.
thumbnail
The bridges center position. There are three phones on the bridge, but noone to call. There are also covered control boxes on the left and right overhangs, used for parallel parking.
thumbnail
A lifeboat even, but you can't get inside it.
thumbnail
Did I say this was a large ship? You have to climb ladders a lot to get around here, the walk-around area is pretty large too. (I did get stuck in one spot, but a camera reset fixed it)
