Gamer's Pulse (Jun 28, 2000)
It took me 5 ½ hours to beat this game on the highest difficulty, and I suspect that if I played the exact same moves over, I would lose. This is the charm, intrigue and power of Shogun. A game that is smooth right out of the box, and addictive as all get out. The hardest thing about writing this review was remembering how much fun I had playing, and not being able to actually play! If you like war games, board games or 3D combat games, Shogun is a must-have. If you have never played those styles of games, then now is your chance to play one of the best. Now if you will excuse me, I have an empire to forge.
Shogun is by far one of the most engaging, intelligent and atmospheric RTS titles that has graced the market in recent times. Despite the many complaints that have arisen about the relatively feature-free turn-based combat, it should be noted that, much like the teachings of Sun Tzu that are so crucial to Shogun‘s real-time combat, simplicity can often reveal surprising complexity if viewed in the right light. The same applies to the adaptive and dynamic combat, as you get what you put into it, thereby opening up gameplay to RTS fans of all levels. Those interested in Ancient Japanese culture will also find much to like here, as the entire game is steeped from top to bottom in pure and uncompromising atmosphere. Between this, the majestic combat and the refreshingly peaceful turn-based strategy, Shogun presents a rather amazing experience that no RTS maven nor fan of the period should deny themselves.

Although there are a couple quirks here and there, they really don't detract from the overall game experience, and Creative Assembly has said that they are committed to fixing those minor problems in a patch. Total War offers some of the best turn-based strategy we've seen in a long time, and adds massive, challenging real-time battles to the mix. If you're a strategy nut, you'll definitely find a high addiction factor here. Put this one on your 'must own' list.
Despite these flaws, SHOGUN possesses an impressive amount of depth and replay value in both strategy and tactical gameplay, making it the leading candidate for Strategy Game of the Year. Bottom line: SHOGUN is well worth the price, so strap on your Do, powder your Katana, and join the armies of the Sengoku Jidai.

Everything about the game smacks of good research and authenticity, down to the ability to select a Japanese voiceover with English subtitles rather than having English voices all the way through. Fans of samurai movies, fans of medieval warfare, or simply anyone wishing to play the single most accurate simulation of war ever created, will have no excuse for not owning a copy of Shogun: Total War. With one caveat... This is not a game for the impatient, and it will take you several hours of play and a number of humiliating defeats before you start to have any idea of how to play properly. However, once you do get to grips with it, Shogun is a highly rewarding and engrossing game that will quite possibly be responsible for a large number of sleepless nights.

Strategy Gaming Online (Aug 03, 2000)
I began the review touching on Japanese minimalist style on purpose. Shogun takes a decidedly similar approach to the strategic game (there are neither hundreds of cities to manage nor massive tech trees to explore nor even an interesting diplomatic system) but this is ironically a strong point; the impression of the game left on the player isn't the taking of provinces or the managing of armies. Rather, the beautiful and immediate tactical engine leaves with the player a lasting memory of battles and desperate struggles, a sense of 'activity' that most strategy games lose in the numbers. For one to be a true Shogun, this - the essence, not the form - is what it should be all about anyway.
GameSpot (Jun 19, 2000)
Despite the apparent success of the strategy-game genre, there has been a pronounced lack of quality games that offer more deliberate, strategic gameplay in addition to action-packed combat. Thus, the arrival of Shogun is an especially welcome addition to the genre: Not only is Shogun a challenging and engrossing 3D real-time tactical combat game, but it also features a great turn-based strategy component that complements the combat wonderfully.

IGN (Jun 22, 2000)
Shogun is a remarkable game and definitely worth getting. So many historical wargames are inaccessible to the casual gamer. They're usually so complex that only hardcore grognards have the patience and understanding to get anything out of them. Shogun is the exception. It proves that a wargame can adhere to standards of realism and fun. It's a great change of pace from the genre's usual offering of Civil War or Second World War games. Hopefully it will convince more developers that you can make an alternative strategy game without having to rely on fantasy or science-fiction type settings.
ActionTrip (Jul 12, 2000)
What's left to say that hasn't been said already? Shogun has its faults, primarily clunky interface and crude management system. Those two issues aside, it features battles that will make you think twice before poking fun at "big man involved in silly wars over territory" idea. It's fun, addictive, and it will get you by another dull civilian day in peace...

PC Joker (May, 2000)
Shogun: Total War is a huge game, but you'll need to experiment with all the tweakable stats and options to fully engage with the gory, blood-letting fun. Shogun's great, but it's one for the RTS veteran, rather than the newbie.
Games Finder (Mar 24, 2014)
In Shogun: Total War you can see where the roots of this highly popular game series started. Despite being the first game in the Total War series the game is just as good as the most recent games.
Gry OnLine (Feb 23, 2001)
Edge (May 24, 2000)
Shogun is no title for the C&C dilettante. It’s a serious strategic undertaking that points the way ahead – a less light-hearted route, but one that’s far more rewarding than the old RTS formula.
GameStar (Germany) (May, 2000)

Even with its flaws, the combination of strategic and tactical gameplay makes Shogun: Total War one of the most unique and enjoyable games in recent memory. Its eye-catching battles sequences and engaging historical combat are reason enough for any of you strategy fans to buy it.
GameGenie (2000)
Shogun: Total War offered more than I expected. The potent combination of turn based strategy and real time battles makes for an event that is rarely matched in other games. More often, we are given one of the pieces of the puzzle, rather than an amalgamation of both. Since you can simulate the battles, all fans of turn-based and real time strategy should find something to like in Shogun: Total War.
PC Games (Germany) (May, 2000)
The video and the Throne Room are all very smooth and mysterious. It's obvious that every detail of the game was carefully considered in relation to historical fact and you'll feel as though you understand feudal Japan a little better after playing. Shogun: Total War is exactly as it seems: violent, chaotic and majestic.
