Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth is a great and easily approachable game. The intuitive interface and flexibility of the numerous options make it an easy “yes” for any strategy gamer or Civ fan looking for something more than Earth’s history may have to offer. While the visual and stylistic choices may not prove to be to everyone’s tastes, there is plenty of both new and familiar to satisfy anyone willing to hop on aboard and see where Beyond Earth is able to take you.

At its core, Civilization: Beyond Earth is incredibly similar to the last entry in the series. However, new names for technologies and resources, new systems, and new victory conditions will still leave many veteran players flailing in the dark for at least their first few of games. Despite this, Beyond Earth still manages to be incredibly enjoyable and emphasize that “one more turn” mentality that will keep players around way beyond their bed times. It may feel more like an expansion to Civilization V than a fully fledged standalone, but there is a lot of new stuff to learn and entertainment to have, making Civilization: Beyond Earth an essential title for strategy gamers.

Fitting member of the series, with interesting new gameplay elements.Thoughtful narrative that manages not to be preachy. However, affinity victories are very same-y.

Pleasing simulation with challenging and intriguing choices. Big ideas, and the many game systems work together very well.

Not revolutionary, but generally well executed and a worthy member of the series, with some interesting new features.

As first impressions go, Civilization Beyond Earth makes a staggeringly poor one. After a few games -- after you get your head around the affinities and the tech web and the dos and donts of living on an alien planet -- it becomes a gorgeous and engaging, if not revolutionary, 4X game. Put aside your expectations of an Alpha Centauri successor, play it like a sci-fi Civilization V and enjoy experimenting with the combinations of sponsors, affinities and techs.

Civilization: Beyond Earth may seem a bit too familiar for a game supposedly set on a distant planet, but the roving packs of aliens and the new quest system make it an expedition worth embarking on.

Interesting experiment, but ultimately the reviewer's least favourite Civilization game for a decade.

The adage “Two steps forward, one step back” really seems to apply to this game. The tech web should have been a more streamlined and creative process, but gets bogged down by not explaining how to do things. Exploring alien worlds should feel exhilarating, but the constant threat of attack makes you paranoid. At the core, this game retains most of what Civ 5 did to make it so memorable, but it trips in some unfortunate ways. If you did like Civ 5, you’ll mostly enjoy this game, but you’ll notice the warts in it a lot more readily than the issues that Civ 5 had.

Firaxis' sci-fi spin on Civilization V has some intriguing ideas that, sadly, don't come together into an equally engaging experience.

The Escapist (Oct 23, 2014)
An overall solid turn-based strategy game that suffers from information overload resulting in analysis paralysis for the player, Beyond Earth has a few really interesting systems but ultimately doesn't transcend those mechanics into something unique or awe-inspiring.

Gaming Age (Dec 11, 2014)
Firaxis' ambition may be great, but their inspiration seems to be left behind on our home planet. We've gone maybe out to Mars in this one, and it's a shame that Civilization's foray into the future is one that reminds us only of how inspired things were in the past. I'd love to see something more inventive in a full release, but maybe that will appear in a less fiscally-demanding expansion at some point. I'm no expert on what that could (or should) be, but it could at least contain more confidence in exploring how old gameplay systems can be re-imagined, rather than retreaded. Otherwise, this is the game whereupon Firaxis has discovers that they aren't good at anything more conceptual than historical or pre-existing franchises. For their sake, and ours, I certainly hope beyond Earth is a stumble that can be corrected down the road.

But as I start another game just to try something different, I’m keenly aware that the man who runs Firaxis, the man whose name begins the full title of Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth, is known for describing gameplay as a series of interesting decisions. That certainly seems to be the mandate in Beyond Earth. But interesting decisions are not the same as an abundance of decisions. In fact, once the number of decisions reach a certain density, they become the opposite of interesting. They become inconsequential. Sometimes gameplay is also the maxim that “less is more”. When Firaxis made XCOM, they understood that keenly. They understood that fewer decisions meant more important decisions which were inherently more interesting decisions. Beyond Earth misses that point entirely, and furthermore fails to address some of Civilization V’s most damning problems. On the whole, I’d rather be on Earth. Or Alpha Centauri.
